Governor's Island, NY Old Post Hospital Second Floor Plan 1871
Made by army.arch
The original hospital at Fort Jay (Columbus) on Governor’s Island was constructed in 1840. It was square in plan with two stories and a basement. The basement housed the surgeon’s office, dispensary, kitchen, and mess. The first and second floors housed the hospital wards. The building was constructed of brick. After the Civil War, two wood-framed wards were added to the back of the brick structure and the original structure was transformed into administration space and examination rooms. The entire complex was transformed into the Post Headquarters after the second hospital was constructed in the 1880s. At some point after World War I, the two ward wings were demolished and the administration building was changed into officers’ quarters. [Plan from the National Archives 77 MISC Fort Files Fort Jay, NY Hospital] The northern half of Governor's Island is a National Register historic district #85002435. It's also a National Historic Landmark. The National Park Service runs Castle Williams and Fort Jay as a National Monument. The rest of Governor's Island is administered by the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation. The island is required by law to have no housing (which is a shame - I think the Presidio model works very well). The island is open to visitors only on the weekends from spring through fall. If you're ever in New York City, I would highly recommend taking the free ferry over to the island and explore. You can even rent a bike on the island.

At the Same Moment, Lower Manhattan Panorama from Governor's Island, New York City
Made by andrew c mace
The ferries to Governor's Island started running yesterday. Governor's Island is a small island near Manhattan that once served as Army and Coast Guard stations. It's now maintained by the National Park Service. We went over today to poke around. It was far less crowded than I was expecting. After a really intense rainstorm blew through, we were left with some nice light reflecting off the city with some less menacing cumulus ambling over. The only problem with Governor's Island is that it opens at 11am and closes at 7pm—so nice twilight shots from here are not (legally) possible. This is a hand-held 19-shot panorama at 70mm with my Nikkor 70-300mm and stitched with Hugin. This one is far more detailed than my pano from the Staten Island ferry. I think the field of view was about 24mm, so there should be around 10x more data in this than a single shot. The original was around 12000 pixels wide after some cropping. I'm really jealous of the large format work here on Flickr (e.g. ), so I'm trying to figure out how to achieve something like that with the gear I have. The title of this photo is somewhere in the image. Can you find it? 19-shots single exposure / f/7.1 / 70mm (105mm=) / ISO 200 / no filters 4000-pixels-wide original. (worth a look)

Corporate Volunteers on Governors' Island / Mitarbeter-Engagement auf dem Gouverneur-Insel in New York
Made by Deutsche Bank
When Governors Island opens to the public for the 2010 season on June 5, many expect its visitorship to far exceed the 275,000 who came in 2009. Thanks to a group of hard-working Deutsche employees, visitors to the island will be able to appreciate one new feature in particular: a large-scale (30’ x 30’) New York Harbor map that will be the cornerstone of new ecology-based interpretive programs. More on www.db.com/csr/en/corporate_volunteering/further_projects... Governor's Island, NY War Department seal Then and Now
Made by army.arch
Fort Jay (for John Jay the governor of New York) built 1797-98, upgraded in 1803 when it was renamed Fort Columbus (it was renamed Fort Jay in 1904). Major Jonathan Williams designed the new fort with earthworks of granite and brick walls and the footprint of the fort was enlarged. Williams replaced the earthworks with sandstone and granite walls and a arrow-shaped ravelin all surrounded by a dry moat. The moat is surrounded by a glacis. The glacis was the primary parade field for the fort and also utilized for a polo field. A golf course was placed on the glacis in the 1930s. The northern half of Governor's Island is a National Register historic district #85002435. It's also a National Historic Landmark. Empty Room
Made by spencerdallen
Burn it down till the embers smoke on the ground And start new when your heart is an empty room With walls of the deepest blue Home's face: how it ages when you're away Spring blooms and you find the love that's true But you don't know what now to do Cause the chase is all you know And (s)he stopped running months ago And all you see is where else you could be when you're at home And out on the street, are so many possibilities to not be alone The flames and smoke climbed out of every window And disappeared with everything that you held dear But you shed not a single tear for the things that you didn't need Cause you knew you were finally free Cause all you see is where else you could be, when you're at home Out on the street are so many possibilities to not be alone And all you see is where else you could be, when you're at home, There on the street, are so many possibilities to not be alone Your Heart is an Empty Room Deathcab for Cutie www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8MK5DG_HVA

NYC - 2010 Vendys: Vendy Rookie Winners
Made by wallyg
The 6th Annual Vendy Awards were held on September 25, 2010 on Governor's Island. Called the Oscars of food for the real New York by Chef Mario Batali, the Vendy Awards are New York City's annual competition for the title of Best Street Food Vendor, and a fundraiser to support the Street Vendor Project of the Urban Justice Center. The Vendy Awards are given out in three categories at festival which doubles as an all-day cook-off between the best sidewalk chefs in the City. A panel of judges awards one of five finalists the Vendy Cup and title of Vendy Award Winner, an honor that went to the King of Falafel and Shawarma. Vendy attendees vote to choose the People's Taste Award winner from the finalists, an honor that also went to the King of Falafel and Shawarma. New York City
Made by Randy Le'Moine Photography
Governor's Island Governors Island is a 172-acre (69 ha) island in Upper New York Bay, approximately one-half mile (1 km) from the southern tip of Manhattan Island and separated from Brooklyn by Buttermilk Channel. It is legally part of the borough of Manhattan in New York City. The island was expanded by approximately 82 acres (33 ha) of landfill on its southern side when the Lexington Avenue subway was excavated in the early 1900s. First named by the Dutch explorer Adriaen Block, it was called Noten Eylant (and later in pidgin language Nutten Island) from 1611 to 1784. The island's current name—made official eight years after the 1776 Declaration of Independence—stems from British colonial times when the colonial assembly reserved the island for the exclusive use of New York's royal governors. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Governors_Island

Forbidden Halls - Jail cell in Castle Williams
Made by Anitab
Castle Williams With walls forty feet high and eight feet thick, this red sandstone bastion bristled with over one hundred cannon when it was completed in 1811. Named after is designer, Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Williams, it has been nicknamed the “Cheesebox” because of its circular shape. Castle Williams, with its twin fort Castle Clinton in the Battery, was built to guard the waterway between Governor’s Island and New York City. Together these forts provided such a formidable defense that the British fleet never attempted to attack New York City during the War of 1812.

Jazz Age Lawn Party
Made by Lissa**
One of my favorite events in the city each year is the Jazz Age Lawn Party, held on Governor's Island with music by Michael Arenella and the Dreamland Orchestra. Lots of people in the most amazing 1920s period costumes. I didn't make it last year and this year was more crowded than it was two years ago. But, still a good time. I wish I were braver; I still didn't ask anyone if it was okay to take their photo - I do it all street photography style. I took some with my medium format camera as well, which will be posted later.

Symbolism in our Statue
Made by Governors Island, National Park Service
ROLL OVER the statue to discover its mysteries (not for cell phones). The statue that sits upon Fort Jay is full of military detail and symbolism, but also mystery. We don't really know when it was put there, and who created it. To learn more about this one of a kind statue you can follow this link to our ranger's blog page where she wrote about it on March 1st, 2010. www.nps.gov/gois/parknews/ranger-erin.htm

SLEM exhibit at Governors Island
Made by scottdunn
The nice folks from SLEM invited me to photograph their temporary exhibit on Governors Island. In this installation, hinged canvas paintings called wind nomads flutter in NYNL formation. I believe NYNL stands for New York Netherlands. See closer views of the wind nomads at slem.org/ And don't miss the other Dutch artists at the New Island Festival www.newislandfestival.com/

42" Striper
Made by KeylimeSteve
There have been more than a few days with nothing biting on the line, but all is forgotten when you hook into a striper like this one. This is why we are out here, patience and persistience usually pays off. I sit here posting this image, I am digesting a small piece from her side, many more meals from this one. Tonight was a nice lemon-white wine and cream sauce (no capers, I used green peppercorns). ♆

Here are my photos from the Governor's Ball of 2011. The festival was quite fun and the crowd really enjoyed themselves. The performances were done by many artists I've never seen before. I was really excited to get the chance to shoot Empire of the Sun and Girl Talk again especially. Review will be up on Gigape.com and The Examiner soon. In the meantime enjoy these photos! Cheers! -Do NOT use without permission-

Governor's Island: Parade Grounds
Made by tangentialism
On Saturday, we ferried out to yet another island on our NYC ALL-ISLAND EXPERIENCE TOUR, Governor's Island. There's a site-installation art show called Set And Drift going on right now, which is good, but the island itself is overwhelmingly great. Loads of open green spaces, few people, a fantastic fort with a grass moat (see below), and--to top it off--a view of lower Manhattan. I rate it picnic-worthy.
