Goosenecks State Park is located near the southern border of the state of Utah in the western United States. It overlooks a deep meander of the San Juan River. Millions of years ago, the Monument Upwarp forced the river to carve incised meanders over 1,000 feet (305 meters) deep as the surrounding landscape slowly rose in elevation. Eroded by water, wind, frost, and gravity, this is truly a magnificent viewpoint. Goosenecks State Park is largely undeveloped. Primitive campsites with picnic tables are scattered back from the edge of the cliff, and vault toilets are available. Campers are advised to bring their own water, food, and other necessary gear. An incredible series of tight switchbacks of the San Juan River gives the area its name. It offers the visitor a close-up view of an entrenched river meander, one of the most striking and impressive examples on the North American continent. The 1,500 foot deep chasm meanders 6 miles while advancing only 1.5 miles. Source: www.infowest.com/Utah/canyonlands/gooseneck.html

I met this photographer from the UK at the rim of the Goosenecks. Shooting large format, which I've never seen up close before--what a different way to shoot. He spent the whole time composing, and when I ran into him later in Mexican Hat (This is a very small town!) he said he hadn't exposed a shot yet and was going back in the morning. I bow before such patience!

The San Juan River takes it's sweet time getting to the Colorado River! This is at the Goosenecks State Park somewhat close to Mexican Hat in southeastern Utah. There's not much to this state park, but it's sure an odd view.

Goosenecks, UT San Juan River is a tributary of the Colorado River. In the Utah section the river meanders quite dramatically. A visit to the Goosenecks State Park is worthwhile.
