The General Motors Renaissance Center complex in Detroit.
Made by Steve Brandon
The GM Renaissance Center is a seven-skyscraper complex on the Detroit International Riverfront that serves as General Motors international headquarters, although the initial construction of the complex was largely paid for by the Ford Motor Company based on an idea by Henry Ford II, and designed by chief architect John Portman. Just by looking at it, I would have thought that it was a 1990s building project, so I was surprised to learn that the first building opened in 1976, and the central 72-storey tower, which is the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center hotel, opened just a year later, in 1977. The Wintergarden, which faces Windsor, Ontario, Canada to the south, is a lot more modern, completed in 2003. Unfortunately, I didn't really get any free time in downtown Detroit during my GM Blogs junket trip, so the Renaissance Center was the only skyscraper complex that I could take multiple source photos of for the complete Autostitch treatment.

Downtown Detroit as seen from the GM Renaissance Center...

I know it's hardly the tallest building in the world, but 72 storeys up is still by far the highest I have ever been in a skyscraper. Unfortunately, the 72nd storey of the Mariott hotel in the centre of the central building is the top floor of a two-storey formerly-revolving restaurant, and we weren't allowed into the lower floor of the restaurant where it would have been possible to go right up to the windows, so you have to see all of the window frame bars obstructing this view.

This is the view from the Wintergarden on the ground floor of the RenCen. The family and I were waiting for the RenCen tour when I snapped this one.
