Ghent (IPA: ; Gent in Dutch; Gand in French, formerly Gaunt in English) is a city and a municipality located in Flanders, Belgium. It is the capital and biggest city of the East Flanders province. The city started as a settlement at the confluence of the Rivers Scheldt and Lys and became in the Middle Ages one of the largest and richest cities of northern Europe. Today it is a busy city with a port and a university. The city is connected to the sea by the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal, it lies at the intersection of the European highways E17 and E40 and it has the third busiest railway station in Belgium.

The view of center, Gent

Unless you know what you are doing or have a good book, get the tour. There are a couple of walking tours which are great.

Great places are the three towers of Ghent: the cathedral of St. Bavo (with the famous medieval altarpiece painting 'Adoration of the Mystic Lamb'), the church of St. Nicholas and the Belfort (Belfry). The Graslei and Korenmarkt are fine places to walk and relax along the river while you admire 13th century trading houses. Also the Gravensteen (Castle of the Counts) and (Friday Market) are must-sees. Around the medieval core of the city, there is also lots of impressive 18th and 19th century architecture. Especially the 'socialist' Jugendstill/Art Nouveau buildings from around 1900 like Vooruit are unique in their kind.

Ghent has two castles, and . Near Gravensteen you'll find very nice neighbourhood called . It has a sphere of small medieval town.

It also has a Museum of Modern Art, named S.M.A.K. (Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst) Another museum which is outstanding in interest with a number of really unusual artefacts is the Kinderen Alijns Godshuis it is now the museum of folklore. The buildings were originally somewhat akin to almshouses for old people - see the website for how children came into its name.

Anbetung Jesu, des Lammes Gottes - Genter Altar, Belgien

Anbetung Jesu, des Lammes Gottes - Genter Altar, Belgien
Made by destinatio
The Adoration of Jesus Christ, the Crucified and Risen Lamb of God (1432) - Ghent Altar, Ghent, Belgium You are worthy ... because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God ... Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise! Revelation 5:9-12 We believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification. Romans 4:24.25 The Ghent Altar by Hubrecht and Jan van Eyck is the principial work of the Flemish school in the 15th century. It is painted on oak panels. Because of the splendour and harmony of colours, the meticulous attention to details as well as the grandiosity of the theme it was highly praised by past masters as Albrecht Dürer. In turbulent times between the 16th to the 20th century, the work suffered repeatedly from violence. Parts of the panels were brought to France or Prussia - or were simply stolen. - 1986 the original work was moved to its present location in Saint Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent, in a separate chapel, specially built for this purpose. Photographing is not permitted there. The photo is taken from a copy of the work presented in one of the ordinary chapels of the Cathedral.

Burg Gravensteen, Gent, Flandern/Belgien

Burg Gravensteen, Gent, Flandern/Belgien
Made by destinatio
Gravensteen Castle, Ghent, Flanders/Belgium -- Whereas the most important parts of are beautifully renovated there were still parts in decay (February 2006). The name of the castle means 'castle of the count' in Dutch. The present castle was built in 1180 by count Philip of Alsace and was modelled after the crusaders castles the count encountered while he participated in the second crusade. Before its construction, their stood a wooden castle on the same location, presumably built in the ninth century. The castle served as the seat of the Counts of Flanders until they abandoned it in the 14th century. The castle was then used as a courthouse, a prison and eventually decayed. In 1885 the city of Ghent bought the castle and started a renovation project. A second renovation took place around 1980.

The Belfry of Ghent, Flanders/Belgium -- The 91-meter-high belfry of Ghent is one of three medieval towers that overlook the old city center of Ghent, Belgium, the other two belonging to Saint Bavo Cathedral and Saint Nicholas' Church (to the left in the background). Through the centuries, it has served not only as a bell tower to announce the time and various warnings, but also as a fortified watchtower and town treasury. Construction of the tower began in 1313. After continuing intermittently through wars, plagues and political turmoil, the work reached completion in 1380. The uppermost parts of the building have been rebuilt several times, in part to accommodate the growing number of bells. The belfry of Ghent, together with its attached buildings, belongs to the set of belfries of Belgium and France inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. (from wikipedia) In front of the belfry the great cloth hall, built from 1425 to 1441.

Made by destinatio
St. Jacob's Church and the Toreken (little tower), View from Friday's Market Place, Ghent, Flanders/Belgium -- St. Jacob's Church dates back to a wooden chapel of the 11th century, which was replaced by a Romanesque stone building in the 12th century. Although later building measures were made in Gothic, then in neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic style, there are still remainings of the original Romanesque period. The Toreken (little tower), formerly the tanners guildhall, was built in Gothic style between 1450 and 1483. It has a step-gable in Kammerstraat and a special distinguishing feature is its staircase tower. Today it the building is used from a restaurant business. This is the last shot of the Ghent series.

The shot Standard 3 exposures HDR on a tripod using the Sigma 10-20mm lens. Photoshop A little crop with perspective to correct the perspective distortion of the Sigma 10-20mm lens for object that are close by. Added a little 'Curves' and masked it away on everything but the river. Added a little saturation. Decreased the saturation and lightness and masked that away on everything but the river, because the river looked unnaturally blue. There was a bit too much noise in the dark part of the river so I applied a gaussian blur and brushed that away -using the history brush- everywhere except on the dark patch in the river. Added brightness, inverted the mask (ctrl-i) and painted it back in, in the cloud parts using several steps of opacity of the brush. Sharpened the image a bit using the unsharp mask to make the buildings pop. There were a few artifacts around the light reflections in the water, blurred those away with the blur tool. You All comments, criticism and tips for improvements are ( as always ) welcome.

St. Nicholas' Church and Belfry, Ghent, Flanders/Belgium -- Whereas already about 1200 there was a Romanesque church on the side of Saint Nicholas' Church the present day Gothic building dates back to the early 13th century. In later centuries it was expanded and received the radiating chapels (shown in the photo below). -- Saint Nicholas' Church predominantly served the rich merchants of the town who build their own chapels within the church. -- Restauration work began in 1960 and is still in progress. In the background - to the right - the Belfry of Ghent. So, you've two of the three orientation towers of Ghent in this photo.

This charismatic homeless guy usually hangs out around the Groentenmarkt in Ghent. I've seen him a hundred times and every time my photo sense is tingling to take a photo of him. A week or three ago I saw him sleeping at the Emile Braunplein. I literally walked past him three times, the third time he woke up because of some city noises. I kindly asked him if I could take his photo, ensuring him it wasn't to make fun of him or anything. At first, he doubted, but then he said Alright, but just one!. I asked him to smile, but he said his teeth hurt. In the end, I'm glad he didn't smile, it wouldn't have been such a natural portrait. We talked for a bit, he sounded intelligent. I promised I would get the photo printed and give it to him the next time I see him. But he wrote down his name and an address instead, where I could drop off the print, which I did last week. With a little grin, he finished with Have a nice working day :) I'm so proud I had the guts to ask him. This is certainly one of my favorite photos, even though it's just a simple portrait with a distracting background :) • Lomo LC-A • Kodak Portra 160VC • No post-processing or editing! Featured in

St-Michielskerk, Gent, Belgium

St-Michielskerk, Gent, Belgium
Made by Erroba (slowly recovering from illness)
. About The St-Michielskerk (church) in Ghent (Gent) is late Gothic and stands on the other side of the Grasbrug, if you turn around you have a view of the Grasleie : . There a shot from down the Graslei looking towards this church here : Graslei after sunset. The shot Standard 3 exposures HDR on a tripod using the Sigma 10-20mm lens and a polarizer. I had to be very patient with all the tourists wandering around in this beautiful city, first I was standing a few meters back but since I was disturbed too many times by passing pedestrians I opted to move my tripod on the elevated part of the street, I only had to move back once for a passing trolley bus. Photoshop Added some extra contrast and red-yellow saturation in the clouds, masking everything else out; copied one mask to the other. A little unsharp mask to bring out the details in the tree. Dodged a part of the church near the tree where it was too dark. You All comments, criticism and tips for improvements are ( as always ) welcome.

. About This is the 'Ballenstraat' in Gent, Belgium. The shot Standard 3 exposures HDR on a tripod using the Sigma 10-20mm lens and a polarizer. I tried a 'normal' shot first, but was disturbed by a car during the first shot, it fired while I took my tripod away and something more or less like this was the result, since that was really pleasing me, I took an HDR like this. Photoshop Added some extra blue saturation in the sky, decreasing the lightness. Made the end of the street to turn to black and white by adding a black&white filter and doing a radial gradient in the mask. Converted the image for smart filters and performed a Gaussian blur, masked it again with a radial gradient in the mask, so that only the far end of the street becomes blurry. This time added my name in top of the image to follow the perspective lines of the shot. You All comments, criticism and tips for improvements are ( as always ) welcome.

Ghent, the real diamond of Flanders (1st series)

Ghent, the real diamond of Flanders (1st series)

In a unique way, Ghent has managed to preserve its medieval power while keeping up with the times. The city center alone is a showcase of medieval Flemish wealth and commercial success. Modern Ghent certainly cannot be overlooked in Belgium. The city has an important harbor, thanks to the canal Ghent-Terneuzen which allows sea-going vessels to bring their products to the city and its industrial hinterland. The Ghent University continues to grow in importance. The presence of so many young people and students has turned Ghent into an important Flemish cultural center. Ghent is also the flower city of Belgium. Flower growers from the region around Ghent sell their beautiful begonia's and azalea's all over the world. Every 5 years the successful 'Gentse Floraliën ( Ghent Flower Show) attracts thousands to the city. Ghent offers a splendid combination of impressiveness and idyllic charm of the proud and (in former times) often rebellious city of Ghent

. About Sunset at the St-Michielsbrug in Gent, Belgium The shot Standard 3 exposures HDR on a tripod using the Sigma 10-20mm lens and a polarizer. Photoshop There was a ghosting artifact of a bike driving through the shot, so edited that away with the clone stamp tool. Cropped with perspective. There were twigs of a tree in the upper right corner, edited that away with the clone stamp tool, same for a small part of building in the left upper corner. There was a small hole in the road just on the highlighted part, so I also clone stamped that away, since it drew too much attention. A little Curves. Some extra saturation. A small colour balance towards the yellow and red. Some dodging in the clouds. Some burning of the reflective red strips on the barrier, which were much too present. Torture Museum, , Ghent, Flanders/Belgium -- From 1407 until 1708 the castle provided the courtroom for the district. Then, a dungeon and a torture room were furnished there. The Instruments of Torture Museum features the themes imprisonment, torture & interrogation and execution & punishment. It shows -- besides a prisoner in chains -- archaic and horrible torture instruments and methods. I prefer to restrict my presentation of it to this single shot. “A hundredth of a second here, a hundredth of a second there - even if you put them end to end, they still only add up to one, two, perhaps three seconds, snatched from eternity.” Two recent purchases: a small Taschen book on Robert Doisneau and , my Yashica Electro 35 GX. I love Doisneau's street photography so much! There's a certain spontaneousness and humour in his work, though I hear some shots are staged. I hope to be able to get even a little close to his wonderful work, but I still have a long way to go... I've been trying to photograph this stranger for ages. The first time I wanted to take a shot, he left just when I finished setting up my camera. So instead, I shot his picturesque room, but it turned out to be an accidental double exposure. The second shot I took of him was very blurry and then this is the third shot, sharp, but out of focus. I slightly cheated and sharpened him a bit in photoshop, but I certainly want to give this another go with a tripod! Taken through the window of his house, with my head against the glass for support haha :D I assume this is part of a restaurant called De Tap & De Tepel, but since it doesn't look very much like a restaurant I can't tell for sure. • Seagull 4A-103 • Kodak Portra 400NC • CanoScan 8800F • Applied some sharpening on the man :(

I came up with the idea for this photo after my girlfriend randomly folded a little paper boat for me. It's been sitting on my laptop ever since. I first did this shot with my on a different location, but since the roll was lost I now reshot it with the Rolleiflex. The puddle was better on the Seagull version, but with the recent warm and dry weather this was the only puddle I could find after a long search... :) Since the photolab scan was pretty bright and yellow, I decided to rescan it. And i`m reading all of your comments, thanks everyone! Anyway i continue with my europe tour, after Brussel we had a day in Gent and Brugge. There was some festival in Gent and it was so stinky that we hardly stayed there. But there was a St. Bavo`s cathedral too, and it was absolutely awesome. We climbed up the tower (which is 80 meters high and has a terrible stairs), went down in the basement, i stared at Van Eyck triptych for half an hour, it is so damn beautiful! It was definitely the best church we visited! Look at my love, she is so beautiful, lighten with sun flare!
