The Galesburg Amtrak station is a train station in Galesburg, Illinois, United States served by Amtrak, the national railroad passenger system. The station was originally built in 1984, and was designed to resemble older Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad depots. It is located north of the large BNSF Classification yard. Just south the Illinois Zephyr and Carl Sandburg diverge via the Quincy main line which bypasses the yard on the east side. The California Zephyr and the Southwest Chief continue to the southwest side of Galesburg near Knox College. There are 2 tracks with 1 island and 1 side platform. Trains to California normally arrive on Track one (western track and closer to station house) and platform on the side platform. Trains to Quincy must arrive on Track two and platform on the island platform as trains divert from the main line just south of the station on to a track known as the Quincy Main Line.[3] It is the main area for Galesburg Railroad Days when it runs during the last weekend of June as bus tours of the rail yards originate from here and a GE Dash-9 locomotive is put on a side track for visitors to look at

Butler Manufacturing, Galesburg, Illinois.

To me this is a interesting photo. I found this photo in a junk shop in Galesburg, Illinois. It is a 8 X 10 black and white. This photo was taken in Butler Manufacturing Co. in Galesburg, IL. My dad worked there for 32 years or so and retired from there. Every 3 or 4 years they would have a tour of the plant in which the employees could bring their families in. It was a wonderful child hood memory. In this old photo it is showing a tour group from the 60's or 70's checking out some fast moving metal that is being processed in some way. Butler Manufacturing Company was a steel mill that made farm silos , metal buildings of all kinds and I beams just to name some things. They started to closed the plant down in the early 1980's. The jobs went over seas. Here is a link to the history of Butlers. www.fundinguniverse.com/company-histories/Butler-Manufact...

California Zephyr at Galesburg Illinois

The City of Galesburg is a unique town in that it was a planned city whose purpose was fostering religious education. Knox College was the main reason for its existence. The college was granted a charter by the Illinois State Legislature in 1837, but it was not until 1841 that it opened its doors to the first freshman class. Old Main was completed in 1857 and has the distinction of being the only building still standing where a Lincoln-Douglas debate was held, the fifth and most famous of the debates held in 1858. The town also became the shipping center of the territory. In 1854 the first train rolled into town on the Central Military Tract (now Burlington Northern Railroad). Later, the Santa Fe railroad was persuaded to extend its line from the Mississippi to Chicago to run through Galesburg. In celebration of our railroad heritage, every June “Railroad Days” is held, included in the event are tours of the $83 million Burlington Northern rail yards.

CB&Q engine 3006, a Hudson class S-4, 4-6-4 locomotive, was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1930. It was one of 12 built by Baldwin for the CB&Q. The length of the engine and tender is 93'4 5/8, the height is 14'10. The total weight of the engine and tender is 728,920 pounds. The tender capacity is 27 tons of coal and 15,000 gallons of water. It is said the top speed would be 110 MPH. When it was retired, the engine had logged 2,348,267 miles in freight and passenger service. Engine 3006 was given by the CB&Q to the City of Galesburg in 1962. With the opening of the Galesburg Railroad Museum, the City turned over by lease the maintenance of the locomotive and the Museum since that time has cared for and kept the engine in top condition at its expense. The citizens of Galesburg donated $3200 in 1962 to pay the expense of moving and building of track for the engine in Colton Park.

The great ghosts of Galesburg

The great ghosts of Galesburg

On Prairie Street, between Main and Ferris - Galesburg, Illinois Finally got a chance to shoot these fabulous ghost signs that were revealed a couple of years ago when a building was torn down. The wonderful Henry George Cigar sign on the left was painted over part of a Bull Durham tobacco sign that must have covered the whole side of this building. Well worth seeing in person - it's huge and pretty darn cool to stand in front of and imagine the sign painters working there 100 years ago. : ) Thanks to Dave and Toby, I knew this gem was out there. Dave (nebbes61) our ghost sign expert, discovered it and has a cool video and shots from when it was recently uncovered Toby (Pete Zarria) also has early photos and some info here. More detail shots below in the comments.

Galesburg, IL: This mural advertisement was uncovered when a building was demolished at 68 N. Prairie St. The ad covers the entire wall of the building and is for Henry George 5 cent Cigars for Men. Part of the ad apparently covers an older ad for Bull Durham cigars. The ads could date at least 100 years old. Day 1: My mother loves me

Day 1: My mother loves me
Made by _chill
Day one of 365 days, and I'm starting off with one of the highlights of my day. My mom sent me this package in the mail-- it's just some checks, but she wrote this on the outside. I'd been having an extremely rough day and, no matter how old I get, it's always nice to be reminded that someone has loved me since the day I was born. Editing done sloppily in iPhoto at 12:30 because if I don't start this today, I never will. I probably will edit this later today in photoshop and post a link to the updated version in this description.

I couldn't resist this old sign. Everyone in these parts knows Maid-Rite. There are still plenty around, even new versions in shopping malls, and the food is usually good. But for true 1939 ambiance, yummy home made pie, great malts and the best beef loose meat sandwich in the world, you have to visit the tiny Canteen Lunch in the Alley in Ottumwa, Iowa, and sit yourself down on a stool at the little horseshoe counter. It's a time machine! Just saying . . .

NS 7518 East, a long unit grain Train, has moved out of the Galesburg yard on the west end, moved west on the Ottumwa Sub 2 miles, then traveled north up the Cameron Jct. connector line and is now heading east towards Chicago on the Chillicothe Sub. This 100+ car grain train has two BNSF DPU's pushing on the rear. According to the TWD the OAT is now a steamy 96 degrees at 1530 hrs and I don't want to move out of the shade of the big tree I'm standing under .

For some reason, Trainboy and I did not follow the 2054 East to Peoria this day. This was TP&W train 220 returning to Peoria from Galesburg. We found the train near the end of yard limits with an air problem and grabbed a quick wedgie on the east side of Galesburg. My notes show us shooting plenty of BNSF trains around the Burg this day but no chase of this gem. They would be around forever, right? 35mm slide scanned by Trainboy. 11-11-1999
