Gabriola Island (49°9'N 123°47'W) is an island in the Nanaimo Regional District on the West coast of British Columbia, Canada between mainland BC and Vancouver Island. It is about 14 km long by 4.2 km wide with a land area of 57.6 km² (22.24 sq mi) and a population of 3,522 as of the Canada 2001 Census. A vehicle and passenger ferry operates regularly from Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. The ferry crossing time is 20 minutes and is considered a commuter ferry as most Gabriolans work in Nanaimo and the high school students must travel to Nanaimo to get to school. The island has a large contingent of artists and artisans and is becoming known for its annual "Studio and Gallery Tour" that is the largest of its kind in the Pacific Northwest. In addition, Gabriola boasts a remarkable number of talented musicians, singers and actors and hosts the Dancing Man Music Festival in late April.

Work in progress

Work in progress

While trying to set up chair and flash and camera (and banjo and me) for an evening self-portrait, I noticed what looked like a light on in the artist's studio behind our home. I went to turn-off the light, and found that the light was actually the last bit of sunlight shining into the studio. I took a few images of Pat's canvas, thinking while doing so that she can put more artistry into a work-in-progress with a rag draped over it, than I often can get out of a finished photograph.

Rugged route on South Gabriola. Dave's response to finding himself featured here: I started training for these difficult horizontal ascents when I was a freshman back in university...sometimes one would get stuck in a particularly difficult gutter and it would take all night to reach the nights objective! See?! - persistence and training mean a lot!

Often, I forget it's even there Then I catch a whiff. And you know how a scent can linger in your nose for days, wherever you go Haunting...

Tiny House on North Road

Tiny House on North Road

My friend Pat built this house with her own hands and the help of a few friends. It is just off North Road. The bedroom is a cozy loft with bookshelves above the front door, accessible by ladder. There's a bedroom and a bathroom, and the rest is the entry hall, living room and kitchen space along the opposite wall.

Fence

Gabriola Island property owners install fences, primarily to keep the foraging deer from destroying their vegetable and fruit gardens as well as their decorative gardens. The abundance of wood and the creative spirit on the island results in many unique fences such as this one.

I love the rocky beaches around Gabriola Island, the many rocks, seaweed, glass fragments, shells, and sea creatures. Depending on how close you are to Brickyard Beach you may find rounded fragments of brick.

had a bit of time to kill before the first ferry back to Vancouver, so we stopped for a beer at the conveniently located ferry-adjacent pub. By now the driving rain has clearly stopped.

Eviscerated by hungry seagulls, yet still smiling. Perhaps I should let the seagulls try that with me. I'm running out of ideas on how to stay smiling at the moment.
