Oyafukoo Street Police Box

Oyafukoo Street Police Box
Made by pokoroto
Oyafukoo Dori is an infamous area in Tenjin. It translates to worry your parents street. There are many bars, discos, karaoke shops and live houses in this area. It is near the fashion area of the main shopping district and a magnet for youth. I recon this is the busiest police box in Fukuoka. I used to know a Johnny-no-neck freelance bouncer who worked on Oyafukoo Street. His job was to beat the snot out of the American sailors who come up from Sasebo, Nagasaki for a night on the town. Thanks to the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) the Japanese police can't really do much with the American servicemen, so if some drunk sailors were causing problems the bar owners would call my freelance bouncer friend to come and take care of them.

WAHAHA!! Your words are indeed ripe with confidence Wasabi san!! However... I suppose you remember that your Wasabi Steel is a publicly traded company... Well... what if I tell you that as of last night the controlling stake of Wasabi Steel got totally pwned by my Origami Heavy Industries? Yes! And there's nothing you can do about it! So now I control Wasabi Steel, and everything that Wasabi Steel owns... don't you read your memos? I'm your new boss, n00b!! This is what all those Japan-specialists make me think of everytime I read the titles on their books such as -Office Warriors of the Rising Sun-, or -Bushido Style Business- or -Secrets of Samurai Leadership-...

Crow's Nest Make Out of Hangers

Crow's Nest Make Out of Hangers
Made by pokoroto
The clever crows have stolen hangers from the surrounding homes to make a nest. This was taken at Kyushu University in Fukuoka City. (Updated 2/6/2101) The nest builder was the Jungle Crow japonensis - Large-billed Crow. The diameter and flexibility of wire coat hangers make perfect nest building material for Jungle Crows. During the breeding season there is a possibility of local or large blackouts being caused by hanger nests built atop power polls and pylons. Kyushu Electric power company has crow patrols that search out and destroy hanger nests on their power grid. If you happen to notice one of these nests on a power pole call your electric company.

Ramen @ Ichiran (Canal City, Fukuoka)

Ramen @ Ichiran (Canal City, Fukuoka)
Made by yusheng
¥780. Good god it's a good bowl of noodle soup. It may be the first time I get why people love ramen so much. I've had ramen all over NYC and Taipei and I've been to a few random joints in Tokyo, but never understood the passion a lot of people have for ramen. I guess I've just never gone to the right places. I'm no ramen expert, so feel free to tell me how lame Ichiran is and point me to a better one in Fukuoka (or Tokyo for that matter, I'll be there in a couple of days). 一蘭 Ichiran Canal City B1F (Theater Building)

Taking the subway from the Korean Consulate today, we were descended upon by what seemed like millions...ok, hundreds, ok, maybe just tens....of school children in their uniforms leaving school. I wish I had photos of the boys because their uniforms were freaking adorable and way cuter than the girls. By the way, I am obsessed with uniforms since coming to Asia.

To tell the truth not even I know what these guys were up to... ...some sort of complot to overthrow the government and rule the country under a new political doctrine apparently... ... or maybe some new religious cult involving the adoration of buses as the new prophets... ... or maybe just getting ready for a parade... ... or all of the above, who knows!

For a change of pace I went out shooting with the widest lens that I have and I tried to ignore the people around me. This one comes from a series I shot called The Place Where I Live. You can see the rest at my FaceBook set.

Camp Hakata played a critical supply role during the Korean War in September 1950 after China entered the war and the Allies were pushed back to a small area around Pusan (Busan). The camp remained an important conduit of men and material throughout the war. The base was closed in 1972.

Made the cover again! This is the third in a row. They told me to give them a shot on cinemas. It was a tad bit difficult, but when I saw this bunch of girls coming out with their balloons I knew I had the shot.

On this, the last day I would call Fukuoka my home, swimming in the pink waters when the sky opened up over the Torii leading out to the twin rock formation at Futamigaura Beach, I could have sworn I heard a voice from above...

I love Ichiran's individual ramen booths. I suppose it's not so good when you go with someone, but, to me, ramen isn't really one of those meals condusive to much talking anyway. You slurp, slurp, slurp and go.
