5 of 5: Storyville superimposed on the Iberville Housing Project.
Made by Ben Ledbetter, Architect
Current photo (4) with Storyville map (3) outlined in red. ___________________________________________ In 1987 I left New Orleans and my teaching in the architecture school at Tulane University. Around that time I was falling into an obsession with Storyville, New Orleans's infamous red light district, and one of my regrets in leaving when I did was that the next design studio I had planned to teach was to have addressed my interests in the site's history and the implications that history might have for its current uses. I had planned to call the studio THE HOUSING PROJECT OF THE RISING SUN. I have revisited these interests in occasional research over the last twenty years. But over the last two and a half, as the triple whammies of Katrina, HUD's entanglements with voracious developers, and intractable racism have threatened anew the Iberville Housing Project, the sadness, mysteries and pathos of Iberville's history have brought me to my obsessions with a re-found urgency. I plan to post prospectuses for a work I am devising for Iberville, as well as a revision to that interrupted Tulane studio, in these pages soon. Meanwhile, any information, contemporary or historical; factual, anecdotal or otherwise, that anyone has regarding the area outlined in the image above would be most welcomed. I would also appreciate any of you directing other flickr users to me who you think may have information or interest in these issues.

looking up in the Saint Louis Cathedral

...just don't hurt yourself while doing it. It's quite a site to behold! a panorama of the ceiling at the St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square, New Orleans, LA. The third, and last, incarnation of the church that was: - built in 1727 - burned down in 1788 - 2nd church built from 1789-1794 - collapses during renovations in 1849 - current cathedral is dedicated on December 7,1851 - survived flooding from Katrina due to the foresight to build it on the highest ground in the vicinity [the original is 3353 x 8400, or roughly 28 megapixels, & comes out to 8.21MB]

Bourbon Street...Lafitte's Blacksmith Bar...941 Bourbon Street...Historic building by day, candle lit piano bar by night -- Lafitte's has always had a split personality. Built before 1772, it is one of the oldest if not the oldest building in the Mississippi valley. It survived the devastating New Orleans fires of 1788 and 1794 and shows the architecture common in the original French trading post before the Spanish rebuilt the city in Creole style. The infamous Jean Lafitte and his brother operated the blacksmith shop as a front for their various illegitmate enterprises.

amber wave

New Orleans, 2007 I was attracted to the amber glow of a Pere Antoine Alley-side window of the St. Louis Cathedral, but the image, once uploaded, didn't do much for me; but I gave it a swirl in Photshop and kind of like how it turned out.
