The Franciscan Monastery
Made by kimberlyfaye
The Franciscan Monastery Quincy Street, NE Washington, DC On a wooded hillside in Northeast Washington, The Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land rises in solitary grandeur. The Monastery and its shrines, constructed over a century ago, are religious centers for tourists and pilgrims of all faiths. Offering a chance to see replicas of the famous Holy Land Shrines, the Monastery also reminds visitors of the Franciscans' work and the importance of the Holy Land's perservation. The gardens provide an oasis of serenity for tourists from around the world and the acres change with every season. Magnificent flowers line the walks and wrap the lawns. Surrounding the church, as if it were protecting it with a great embrace, is the Rosary Portico or Cloister Walk. Statues and reproductions of Holy Land Shrines are found throughout upper and lower gardens. Stations of the Cross are placed amid the natural beauties of the garden. Thanks, WeLoveDC!!

Franciscan Monastery Dome
Made by Mr. T in DC
The impressive central dome, with canopy over an altar, inside the main church building (1898-99, Aristide Leonori) of the Franciscan Monastery, in the Brookland neighborhood of Washington, DC. At the far left there was construction going on, hence the lack of symmetry. Blogged: www.princeofpetworth.com/2010/12/dear-pop-interior-decora...

monastery life
Made by NCinDC
Franciscan Monastery in the Brookland neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The monastery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The main building is covered with scaffolding, so I'll have to go back and reshoot when the remodeling process is completed. DCist photo of the day on October 20, 2008. Thanks DCist!

Franciscan Monastery Flower
Made by Mr. T in DC
Flower in one of the gardens of the Franciscan Monastery in the Brookland neighborhood of Washington, DC. I think I over-sharpened this one a bit. Blogged: gherkinstomatoes.com/2009/08/02/idylls-of-cuisine-24/ district365.com/franciscan-monastery-dc/

Franciscan Monastery Tomb of Mary Mystery Light
Made by Mr. T in DC
Entrance to the replica of the tomb of Mary, on the grounds of the Franciscan Monastery, in Washington, DC. This was a throwaway shot, intended to capture the text on the sign for later, but when I reviewed it, I noticed the aberration just under the sign, some kind of flare maybe? The thing is, I had my lens hood on, as well as a UV filter, and it was pretty shady around the entrance. Spooky!

Franciscan Monastery Fountain
Made by Mr. T in DC
The Franciscan Monastery, at 1400 Quincy Street NE, in the Brookland neighborhood of Washington, DC. Beyond the portico, the main building is called Mount Saint Sepulchre (1898-99, Aristide Leonori), and it is surrounded by porticos and gardens. Blogged: district365.com/franciscan-monastery-dc/

Franciscan Arches
Made by Non Paratus
This is another scanned slide from a number of years ago. This is a view of the clerestory of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, a Franciscan Monastery in Washington, D.C. This is a relatively old structure for Washington, D.C., having been completed in 1899. It's relatively unknown, as well, even to locals. That's unfortunate, too, because it's a beautiful place.

Franciscan Monastery Stone from Jerusalem
Made by Mr. T in DC
This is an ancient stone relic from Jerusalem, inside one of the central chambers of Mount St. Sepulchre (1898-99, Aristide Leonori), the main church of the Franciscan Monastery in Washington, DC. The faithful apparently touch or rub the stone and have worn it down over time. I was going to give it a try, but I'm a germ-phobe, so I chickened out.

pink
Made by NCinDC
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One of the many flowers at the Franciscan Monastery in Washington, D.C. The monastery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was my first time visiting that place and it's absolutely beautiful. I have many more pix to upload from that trip.

Baldaquin and Dome
Made by Non Paratus
This view looking up at the dome of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Washington, D.C. looks past the baldquin, an ornamental canopy seen in a number of grand churches. This is a scanned slide from several years ago. I believe I may have been using daylight slide film, which accounts for the amber color in this photo.

Franciscan Monastery Main Church

The Franciscan Monastery, at 1400 Quincy Street NE, in the Brookland neighborhood of Washington, DC. This is the main church, Mount Saint Sepulchre (1898-99, Aristide Leonori), and it is surrounded by porticos and gardens. There are a few palm trees on the property, giving the compound a tropical feel.

Franciscan Monastery Columns
Made by Mr. T in DC
Closeup of columns in the Rosary Portica, at the Franciscan Monastery, in the Brookland neighborhood of Washington, DC. The columns are of varying colors and designs, emulating the way the churches in Rome are built with varying columns plundered from different ancient temples.

One of the flower gardens of the Franciscan Monastery in Washington, DC, just inside the main gate, which is flanked by segments of the Rosary Portico. Blogged: district365.com/franciscan-monastery-dc/

Franciscan Monastery Statue
Made by Mr. T in DC
St. Francis of Assisi and the Turtle Doves (Porfirio Rosignoli, 1924), on the grounds of the Franciscan Monastery, at 1400 Quincy Street NE, in Washington, DC. In this scene, St. Francis persuades a boy to free the doves which he intended to sell into captivity.

Franciscan Monastery Grotto Chapel
Made by Mr. T in DC
Chapel inside replica of the Grotto of Gethsemane, on the grounds of the Franciscan Monastery, in NE Washington, DC. I know it's blurry, but I was getting attacked by some sort of bugs down there, so I just fired off a couple of shots and got out of there.

Franciscan Monastery Holy Sepulchre
Made by Mr. T in DC
Entrance to Holy Sepulchre replica inside the main church building of the Franciscan Monastery, in Washington, DC. It appeared to be one of the most sacred rooms in the complex. I was surprised lightning didn't strike me when I walked in there!

Franciscan Monastery Portico
Made by Mr. T in DC
View down one of the segments of the Rosary Portico, at the Franciscan Monastery, in the Brookland neighborhood of Washington, DC. It was such a nice spot - I could have lingered there all day if they had chairs, WiFi, and coffee available...
