Tokyo International Forum II
Made by Katsudon in Shanghai
Tôkyô, Japan Tokyo International Forum, Architect: Rafael Viǹoly Nearby the Imperial Palace is situated the T.I.F. It is settle like a big ship in the center of Marunouchi district, the building is suprising by its huge scaled atrium, roofed by an enormous ship shaped steel structure acting like a beam. But actually despite of this scale, the TIF is a surprisingly quiet place in the noisy buisness district! The outside plaza between the two buildings of the complex is made soft by the calming presence of trees which provides a cool shadow over benches. It's possible there to have a lunch on a cafe terrace in silence. The inside atrium is a masterpiece of volume and structure! Despite the depth of the main floor situated underground, the whole volume is bathed by a soft natural light comming from the completely glazed roof and north(?) facade. The south facade is actually from the ground to the top a complex of meeting rooms, restaurants and other facilities that act like a protection wall against railways and avenues noise situated just along the TIF... The other building is composed by shopping complex with also the main floor underground and big exhibition halls. The TIF is a masterpiece of architecture. Answering a function with elegance and human in the center of reflections. What else?

Sunset Over The Imperial Garden
Made by Scott Barlow
I caught a nice break in the hot August weather during my last trip to Tokyo. The days were definitely getting cooler, and the hot, humid air had started to clear with all of the dense cloud coverage, making my stay rather pleasant. The Imperial Palace is located just outside of Tokyo Station, and while about one-half serves as the private residence for the Emperor and his family, the other half of the 3.41 square kilometers serves as a public park and an arena (Nippon Budokan Hall). Pictured here is part of the outer castle wall, Hamaguri Moat, Kikyo Gate entrance, the Tatsumi Yagura (arrow storehouse) in the foreground and the Imperial Household Agency part of the residence in the background. For this photo, I combined seven bracketed exposures in Photoshop, saved as a TIFF and tonemapped in Photomatix. Post-HDR work done again in Photoshop and iPhoto for color, contrast, highlights and GPS location information. EXIF Exposure Program: Aperture Priority Exposures: 7 bracketed +/-1 each Aperture: f/2.8 Focal Length: 50 mm ISO Speed: 200 Exposure Bias: 0 EV

Kusunoki Masashige
Made by jpellgen
Kusunoki Masashige (1294-1336) is an eduring symbol of loyalty and honor in Japan for his self-less act of obedience during the Kamakura period. Despite attempts to advise Emperor Go-Daigo to retreat to the mountains when their forces were betrayed by Ashikaga Takauji, Go-Daigo refused. Kusunoki lead his army into battle against impossible odds. He and hundreds of his men comitted seppuku. His final words are now famous, and they are quite similar to those of American patriot, Nathan Hale who is believed to have said I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country. Kusnoki's last words echoed the same sentiment: Shichisei hokoku (I wish I had seven lives to give for my country). The battle took place in Kobe, an area I am quite familar with. The Minatogawa shrine in Kobe houses the grave of Masashige. I have photos of that shrine in my photostream. *Featured in Explore

The Moat
Made by Siva_K
That surrounds the imperial palace , Tokyo . This was shot on a cold rainy day Even though the Japanese monarchy is claimed to be more than 2300 years old, the Kings always did not rule the country . There have been regents in the earlier period ruling in the name of the King but they were not warlike . But a millenium ago a new class emerged who were originally farmers that took to arms to protect their lands. Gradually, this class, the Samurai, became the rulers and reigned over the nation for almost a millenium. This castle was originally called the Edo Castle . A Samurai Tokugawa Ieyesu who was the Shogun ( or General) made this place his base which eventually made Tokyo the largest city and the nation's capital

Tokyo: Ochanomizu
Made by manganite
For Manfred, who told me that this view is the one which contains everything what he associates with Tokyo. And one can understand this in some sense, I think. There're so much things to be seen typical for this city in it. First of all maybe the train tracks crossing here on three different levels, the yellow Sobu line, the red Chuo line and below of them the Marunouchi Line crossing the Kandagawa. And the buildings, the contrast of the small and old ones along the river and the high and colorful buildings in the background, marking the border between Ochanomizu and Akihabara. Urban wishing well..........
Made by Ken.Lam
In my line of work I get to work at various offices. This one had a particularly cool atrium which is shaped like a semi-circle. With the wide angle (12mm) I was able to get this composition which is slightly unusual (for me) but works very well. Its nice to capture something new in Tokyo that I haven't really seen on flickr.. Unfortunately I was only in this office for 30 mins before handing back my pass. So many compositional possibilities here but not enough time especially since the place is full of security! Again sorry flickr friends but busy at work and out-side of work. Hopefully catch up during the holidays... Merry Xmas everyone.

Foie Gras Donburi @ Vinpicoeur
Made by yusheng
¥1280/US$13.89 (tax inclusive). Holy mother of god this was good. Luscious foie gras, with perfectly runny hotspring egg on top, a liberal amount of super fresh young onions chopped up and just the right amount of sauce. Mix it all up and it's a little bowl of heaven right in front of you. Limited to 12 servings during Monday lunch only. This is going on my must-go list for all my future trips to Tokyo (as long as there's a Monday noon in my itinerary somewhere). Imperial Moat
Made by /\ltus
First HDR shot taken with my new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX35. Bought this because of its wider 25mm wide-angle lens, auto-bracket capability, and small size. Should be a good camera to keep with me at all times to get a wider range of shots off than my Canon IXY 910S (still a great camera, but no auto-bracketing) and Pentax K10 (awesome camera but too big to lug around to-from work). 3xp HDR shot taken freehand of the Imperial Palace's moat with the Hibiya business district on the other side. Tokyo, Japan.

The black temple
Made by manganite
A few days ago I found one of the most strange places in Tokyo. A temple painted completely in black! And it was closed everywhere, no chance to see inside the altar room as usually. And beside some terrifying looking animal statues on the roof, there was no decoration at all. A dark and empty place, which could make one frightened... The temple is called Yushima Seido and it seems to be a Confucian temple, which I never noticed before in Japan. It's located in Ochanomizu , a few meters away from the JR station on the other side of the Kandagawa, hidden in a small park.

Tokyo - Imperial Palace
Made by GlobeTrotter 2000
Tokyo Imperial Palace is the imperial main residence of the Emperor of Japan. It is a large park-like area located in Chiyoda, Tokyo close to Tokyo Station and contains various buildings such as the main palace (Kyūden) and the private residences of the imperial family. If you want to visit the Imperial Palace (no entries are allowed in the buildings and residence), it is required to ask for a permission card at least 1 day in advance. Tokyo Tempest
Made by /\ltus
Another shot taken with my new Lumix LX5. This was of Typhoon #9 that blew through Tokyo last week but facing to the East (versus the other shot facing the South). Skies had a surreal purple tone. However tweaked this one to be red to give the cityscape a bit more of a dark demeanor, thus 'Tempest' in the title. Would've been better for me to shoot this in HDR, but shot this while *moving* down in an elevator with glass windows. Am most pleased with the quality the LX5 gave me in a low light shot while moving. Tokyo, Japan.

Tokyo, Japan
Made by /\ltus
I posted a non-HDR version of this shot a few months back and just tonight noticed that I had actually taken bracketed shots as well of the same scene and had done HDR rendering to it. Only noticed now because I'm doing some drive cleaning this evening and came across this (and a few others) that I had yet to post. Posting this because I actually like this one to the other one, as the neon comes out better. 3xp handheld HDR rendered shot taken with my (at the time) new LX5 point-n-shoot Lumix Tokyo Station, Japan.

Tokyo - Nijubashi Bridge
Made by GlobeTrotter 2000
This is the bridge to Nijubashi - part of the private part of the Imperial Palace of Tokyo, with the Fushimi Yagura in the background. The bridge was actually built in the middle of the Meiji period (1888). A wooden bridge originally stood here before connecting to a masugata gate on the other side. The area is generally inaccessible to people except new years and the emperors birthday. Explored: Highest Position: #227 Digital Blending of 3 exposures (+/- 2EV)

Tokyo International Forum atrium
Made by Lil [Kristen Elsby]
In 1989, Rafael Vinoly won the international competition to design Japan's largest and most prominent international convention and performing arts centre, the Tokyo International Forum, located between Ginza and Marounochi. This hull-shaped atrium is a civic space which is 60 metres high and made entirely from glass and steel. Yurakucho, Tokyo, 2005

Celluloid
Made by The Devil in the Detail
Finally had a chance to go walkabout after work on SUnday evening. The light in early evening in Tokyo when all the lights are just starting to come on but there is still blue in the sky is just perfect for shooting urban landscapes. Usually it is dinner time with the kids which is why I so rarely have a chance to get out at this time of evening. This is a building in front of Tokyo station that I like the curves and metallic lustre of. Explored Sept 14th

Starbucks Discoveries
Made by jpellgen
One of the best single serving beverage ideas I have seen in a long time. These Starbucks Discoveries lattes come in a variety of flavors and sell for about $2 at convenience stores. They come with a foil lid under a plastic lid, which allows you to insert a collapsible straw through both layers and not make a mess. This is by far the best flavor--I love this. I wish they sold it in the States. 7-Eleven, Yaesu Mall. Chiyoda, Tokyo.

Tokyo Typhoon
Made by /\ltus
Was making my way out of the office this evening and was treated to a surreal sky as Typhoon #9 was barreling down on Tokyo. This marks the first post using my new Lumix DMC-LX5. Bought it because my old Lumix was starting to show its age after 3 years of dependable use (that's the excuse I gave myself in upgrading to the latest Lumix ;-) Non-HDR shot taken overlooking the Yaesu side of Tokyo Station as Typhoon #9 blows through. Tokyo, Japan.

Tokyo lines & curves
Made by daruma*
Designed by US-based Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly, the Tokyo International Forum was completed the year before I moved to Tokyo and it quickly became my favourite building in the city. But this is the first time I've tried to photograph it. It's a fascinating structure - designed to look like a ship's hull. Part of the and buildings sets
