365 Project Day 68: March 9, 2011 The Presidio Cavalry Barracks by night. This building dates back to 1902 and, as you might have guessed, was used to house the cavalry, which had a large presence in the Presidio until the 1940s. Just down the hill are the horse stables, which are still used to house the horses of the National Park Police. I occasionally run a horse patrol when I'm out wandering. I'll have to get a photo some day... The Presidio Trust recently finished a complete restoration of the century old building, bringing it up to code, and introducing a number of green improvements, including a living roof on one wing. They've been doing a lot of work on some of the buildings around here, and I have to say I'm pretty impressed with their efforts to respect the history of the park while simultaneously looking to the Presidio's status as a National Park and planning with an eye toward the environment. They've managed to retain the historical character of these cool buildings while bringing them into the modern day with state of the art environmentally friendly design. Unfortunately, most of this building is still sitting vacant, as the park has had trouble recruiting commercial tenants with the disruptive Doyle Drive construction going on next door...I took a peek through the windows and while the facade is relatively plain, but the interior features some really interesting intricate molded ceilings and a cool central staircase. I'd like to get inside some time to check out out some more. This was taken during an evening photowalk down the hill from my place. I didn't find much interesting in my short walk, apart from a few spots I might return to in different light, and it was getting dark when I saw this building, brightly lit, but empty, across the street. I've run by here a million times, but it's set back from the street, so I've never looked at it up close. I shot a few random shots in the back when I approached, but once I walked around the front, I knew this would be the photo for the day. I really liked the lighting, and got a couple good photos, even handheld with my fairly slow 15-85mm.

365 Project Day 94: April 4, 2011 Another shot of the newly remodeled Cavalry Barracks (building 682) in the Presidio. This wasn't what I intended to go out and shoot today, but I was wandering again and just stumbled on this at the right time in the right light, so I had to get a shot. It turned out to be my favorite of the day. This is the back of the barracks from my photo. The central structure is the living conference room. It's not quite alive yet, but this building, the former bathroom, has been converted into a conference room with a living roof of succulents. The trellis structure will eventually be overgrown and wrapped with plants, providing additional insulation.

365 Project Day 96: April 6, 2011 I managed to make my way into building 682, the former Cavalry Barracks from photos 68 and 94, tonight. All in all, it's a pretty cool building and they did a good job restoring it, keeping historic elements intact where ever possible. The conditions weren't perfect for most photos, but it was interesting to wander around a bit. The ceilings on the first floor were particularly interesting. These intricately molded ceilings are actually pressed from sheets of tin, and are original to the building.

Surprisingly, it is hard taking pictures of DJ lights with high exposers with a semi decent camera. This one turned out the best I think.

This place now looks ready for a dance after my uncle and I added some lighting effects.

I like this one because the light is illuminating the crowd. Very cool in my opinion.
