Coffee Break In The Distillery District - HDR/Tone-Mapped

Coffee Break In The Distillery District - HDR/Tone-Mapped
Made by jwvraets
The 'Distillery District' in Toronto's Eastern core area, is a complex of old industrial buildings dating back some 125+ years and, as the name so clearly states, was a distillery operation in its earlier life. Now long since out of the alcohol business, the buildings have been renovated, partitioned off into smaller offices and now have a new life art galleries and restaurants. On occasion they appear as settings for film productions in Toronto, including 'The Murdoch Mysteries' in the past few years. The restaurants are also hangouts for members of the performing arts community. On a visit here a couple of years ago with a friend, we stopped into this coffee shop and I was struck by the signs, the textures and the overall atmosphere. On reviewing the image in light of the work I have been doing the past few months getting the hang of HDR processing, I felt this to be a good candidate for such treatment. - JW Original image taken with a Pansonic Lumix FZ30, at full wide angle (approx 35mm equivalent in classic 35mm film format), ISO80, F/2.8, 1/50sec. Single image (hence tone-mapped, not strictly HDR) HDR processing was done using Luminance/Qtpfsgui with settings as indicated below. Additional PP was done using GIMP: slight tone adjust using curves, overall colour desaturation plus some additional red-channel-only desaturation, sharpen, add border and scale to 1024 wide for posting. ============================== 2009_05_24_018_cofdist01adjbordx1024_pregamma_1_mantiuk_contrast_mapping_0.1_saturation_factor_1.2_detail_factor_5 ============================== Qtpfsgui 1.9.3 tonemapping parameters: Operator: Mantiuk Parameters: Contrast Mapping factor: 0.1 Saturation Factor: 1.2 Detail Factor: 5 ------ PreGamma: 1

One of the taller, better known residents of Toronto's Distillery District. Having stood beside this 40 foot high tripod, I now have a better appreciation for how the narrator from H.G. Wells' 'The War of The Worlds' must have felt! The artist who created this impressive work is Michael Christian. Check out the history of It and his other art at michaelchristian.com/. It was an interactive work featured at Burning Man.
