Title of original NARA item 551960: LAKE MICHIGAN'S WATER IS AT A RECORD HIGH THIS YEAR. LIFEGUARD TOWS LIFE GUARD BOATS PAST JETTY, 06/1973. Original NARA photo taken by Paul Sequeira (DOCUMERICA series). This photo was taken by Arlen Parsa on December 31st, 2010 at the same location (the Montrose Beach jetty in Chicago.). As you can see, the bikini-clad beach-goers and record-high tide from 1973 has been replaced by ice flows and umbrellas some 37 years later. Note to NARA judges: For some reason, Flickr is not showing the original size of the photo for download. If you want the original resolution photo (3264 × 2448 not the 1024 x 768 that Flickr shows), just send me an email: arlen (dot) parsa (at) gmail (dot) com.

Best Large On Black January 4th image looking northeast from the famous Montrose Horseshoe Pier on the north side of Chicago. The temperature was 15° Fahrenheit. The winds were around 25 mph out of the north. Which probably put the real feel temp around zero. This cold day did not seem to bother me however. I kept shooting until my battery died on the 7D. Had a great time. Hope you enjoy this HDR based work in Photoshop.

Montrose Point, Chicago, Illinois. Taken with a Panasonic DMC-FZ50 with an Olympus TCON-17 tele-extender. The broken wing maneuver is an attempt to lure potential predators away from its nest. Just a note: I did not set out to scare this bird. The first time I had any indication that there was a nest in this area was when I took this photo and, when I realized it, I moved away from the area so as not to cause it any additional stress.

This was taken the same day of the October Gale (the epic wave images I posted). I hiked around to the sheltered side of the shoreline. The view across the fence to the sailboat & the frothy lake was fabulous as were the golden tipped clumps of dune grass. Happy Fence Friday!! ~ ♫ Jimmy Buffett – Son of a Son of a Sailor ♫

Looking out at the Chicago skyline. You can see the Hancock and Trump Tower. I also like how he has a nice sparkle reflection on his left leg. How did wireguy fall off the swing? Find out at www.spudart.org/blogs/randomthoughts_comments/5441_0_3_0_C/

A previously unpublished image. I haven't been posting many of my 2:1 crop images as they just don't seem to have much visual power on screen. Viewing larger helps or check it out at 500px.com. Thanks for visiting.

Don't know how many of you will view this in its original size, but I highly recommend it. The picture contains a crescent Moon and one of the intake cribs. I might have to print this out in poster size.

Hey hey, it's another mise-en-scene style video! This time it's Montrose Harbor here in Chicago one dramatic evening right at dusk, silently watching the waves come in for about 30 seconds. Shot during a recent rainy bike ride through the area.

There was a painting in the house I grew up in which had a sunrise in the distance... I always thought the sun looked like an egg yolk in the midst of breaking. This shot does not contain a sun, but the yellow reminds me of that painting.

According to mpgoodey (thanks!) at the Field Guide: Birds of the World, this is a Spotted Sandpiper in near summer plumage. I saw it washing itself on the water ... then ran away from me.

Fishing can be lonely... and boring... and bug-infested... Yet, relaxing and fun and fulfilling. Even still, not sure I'd eat anything taken out of the lake this close to downtown.

... is the Merriam-Webster definition of dawn. Despite the haze, I actually saw the sun break the horizon later in the morning. But still, the clear horizon continues to elude me.

Grey? Gray? Bet they saw this view and thought, Yeah! This is the next Gotham! Okay, probably not. But the lake is looking like its sewer-infested self.
