Turn me on, dead man.

10 points if you get the reference. Admittedly, I put two clues in the tags... I was going through pictures from the Columbus Day parade. This is always a weird holiday for me. We watched the parade from Fisherman's Wharf, which makes perfect sense to me as there is an Italian presence in the neighborhood. I.e. all the touristy restaurants serve San Francisco Italian-American food. Cioè the famed cioppino. I've heard people say that the name comes from the Genoese word to chop, but there is a fish soup in the Riviera called ciuppìn and - according to my Italian aunt - that is the Ligurian for zuppina, which would mean little soup. Granted, that aunt is Tuscan and I didn't actually ask the Ligurian relatives, so who really knows? As far as I know, many of the Italian-Americans in San Francisco are of Ligurian descent. My San Francisco Italian-American relatives are. My great-aunt told me that all of the bakeries in North Beach were Lucchese, but she may have said that because I'm a quarter Lucchese. My family's favorite bakery for grissini was recently bought by a family who just emigrated from Lucca. Granted, they've changed some of the recipes for the worse, but it's nice to have people to speak Italian with! Anyway - after all the digression - a few shots from the day. Explore #208! Thanks much!

Blue Angels Formation - Angel Echelon

Blue Angels Formation - Angel Echelon
Made by idashum
The Blue Angels demonstration begins with the C-130 aircraft known as Fat Albert. Fat Albert shows off its maximum performance capabilities during a ten-minute performance. Then out thunders the superstars of the show - the Blue Angels. The Blue Angels exhibit choreographed skills possessed by all naval aviators, which include aerobatic maneuvers of the four-plane Diamond Formation, in concert with the fast-paced, high-performance maneuvers of its two Solo Pilots. Finally, the team illustrates the pinnacle of precision flying, performing maneuvers locked as a unit in the renowned, six-jet Delta Formation. During the show season, the team is stationed at Forrest Sherman Field, Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida. The Blue Angels fly 68 air shows at 35 air show sites in the United States during the 2010 season. The team celebrates their 23rd year of flying the F/A-18 Hornet. Last season, more than 8 million spectators watched the Blue Angels perform. Since its inception in 1946, the Blue Angels have performed for more than 463 million fans. Stretch

You can read more about my $2 Portrait Project here. Thursday night my friend and I went out shooting in SF. We first went up to the SF Art Institute and shot up there and then walked down to Fisherman's Wharf. While down at the Wharf I ran into Stretch. Stretch asked me for money and I asked him if he wanted to pose for a $2 Portrait and he said he did. Stretch said he also goes by the name of Sniper. I asked him why people called him Sniper and he said it was because he was always finding other people's unfinished cigarette butts to finish smoking. He said they were called snipers and said that he was really good at finding them so his friends called him Sniper. Strech said he'd only been in San Francisco about 8 months. He said he moved here 8 months ago from Detroit because the weather was warmer out here -- although then he complained that San Francisco was too cold too and sort of fumbled his way through the famous Mark Twain quote about the the coldest winter being a summer in San Francisco. Stretch said he had two kids. A son who was 20 and a daughter who was 7. He hasn't seen either for many years though.

Jellyfish

Jellyfish - Brown Sea Nettle - San Francisco Aquarium, California Hello Everyone... happy weekend! I had a crazy week and really didn't have any time for Flickr :( The San Francisco Aquarium was one of my first stops while on a business trip to California. I had been wanting to shoot these Sea Nettles for a really long time. I immediately made it down to the jellyfish area and started takings pics. I began by using aperature priority mode and setting the f-stop to 4.0 keeping my camera at ISO200. At these settings the shutter speed was way too slow to get a crispy capture (1sec+). I increased the ISO in small increments hoping that it would help but I was at the high end of the ISO spectrum (noisy) and the shutter speed was still way too slow. I then switched the camera mode from A-priority to Manual mode and set the settings to f/6.3, 1/80, and ISO1000. I took a bunch of shots (which were all a bit underexposed). 1/80 of a second was fast enough to freeze the action of the jellyfish and yield a crispy photo with lots of detail. I then corrected the photos in photoshop by increasing the exposure of the raw images. Camera Data from this shot Camera: Nikon D3 Lens: Sigma 105mm f/2.8 F Stop: f/6.3 Shutter: 1/80 ISO: 1000

Nunya D. Bidness - San Francisco, California. As a friend once said to me, it’s easy to take pictures of pretty girls with tons of bokeh. I try to mix it up when out for strangers and this gentleman was exactly what I was looking for after stranger #77. I met this man on the walk to Pier 39. When I came upon him he went into a rant about the government owning every camera and how they take all the images every night for some nefarious reason. I asked him if I could take his photo and he said absolutely not! Then I offered him 2 dollars… he thought for a second and said sure. Whenever I take photos with someone low to the ground like this I like to get even lower and it definitely helped here. Without this angle I would have never picked up the blue of his eyes. Using the 24-70mm here at f/2.8, I wanted to put the chain link fence into bokeh. Would have used the 135 but I was short on distance between him and a bus parked 4 feet from him. I asked his name and he said if you don’t know it then you don’t need to know it! So another, Nunya Damn Bidness individual.

San Francisco Golden Gate

She refused to have me call her ma'am. I am from the South and I can't help it. She explained that, It makes it sound like we are not equals. She's about my late grandmother's age. She has devoted her life or at least 30 yrs of her life to Helpers’ Bazaar at Ghiradelli's Square. The store carries name brand and couture, all donated from rich socialite of San Francisco. The proceed goes to the Helpers of the Mentally Retarded. The shoot is for a benefit she is hosting next month. The hat is Givenchy and the dress is classic Galanos (who is now doing photography) Update: 6/16, I received a hand written note in the mail in a calligraphy font from Joy. What a lovely treat after all, I should be the one thanking her.

Sea gull

Made by Mell P
Taken while I was waiting for the sun to set. I'm amazed at the detail. Some people think that sea gulls are awful and annoying. I think they are just amazing and quite funny, too. I'm not really into nature/landscape photography (except macros :D) but there hasn't been really much else to photograph. Blehh, today was a really bad day. I just want to go to sleep. Oh, and I get to sleep on a floor tonight. Joy. Oh and by the way, this is not cropped. This was taken with my 50mm, and the bird got super close to me. If anyone would like to see my vacation album on my website, flickr mail me. 38.365 | My website | My blog |

Silvermen trio - San Francisco, California. The Silverman trio is a group of street entertainers that is pretty well known in the Pier 39 area. I asked for their photograph and they agreed only after a small contribution. It’s strange because they don’t like to have their photograph taken unless they get some cash. They are in public so getting photographs of them isn’t really hard. I pointed out that my wife was farther away and snapping photos too… so he jokingly chased her down and tried to plant a kiss on her cheek. Fortunately he was not successful ;o) I have processed this with a tonal contrast filter and then a cross processing filter, both from Nik software. Thanks guys!!!

Take all of your wasted honor Every little past frustration Take all of your so-called problems, Better put ‘em in quotations If you could only, just say, what u need to say.. Walking like a one man army Fighting with the shadows in your head Living out the same old moment Knowing you’d be better off instead, If you could only . . . Say what you need to say Have no fear for giving in Have no fear for giving over You’d better know that in the end Its better to say too much Then never say what you need to say again Even if your hands are shaking And your faith is broken Even as the eyes are closing Do it with a heart wide open Just Say, what you need to say ..

Another old photo from San Francisco. Best viewed on black(press L please!) Six Flags Magic Mountain today with Pauline was AMAZING... besides the 100 degree weather :P If any of our Flickr buddies ever come to California, you should definitely go to this place! And go on the ride below(it's called X2)! :D It was so awesome! --It goes backwards while you are flipping over 360 degrees in your seat.. not to mention that it shoots out fire at night :D Also, my whole Flickr profile got deleted.. and I have no idea why :( Everything I typed is somehow gone, including my Flag Counter :( so I have to redo everything...... joy. Maybe it was time for a new description anyway...

I love Joy, she's not only a classy lady but literally a joy to be around. I stopped by her upscale thrift store to show her the photos I took of her last month and she loved them. See another photo of Joy. She is very well known for the big designer glasses she wears every day. She has devoted her life or at least 30 yrs of her life to Helpers’ Bazaar at Ghiradelli's Square. I have like a dozen photos of this beautiful carousel. Let's start with this. :) Hang on! I love the beat of Christina Aguilera's new album Bionic. My favorite song is Elastic Love NOTE: I processed this with Adobe LightRoom 3. It migrated all the previous presets, including third party premium preset from Nik Software. I love the free presets included like rounded corners, B&W look, split tone, and many more. LR 3 rocks!

This picture was taken while Domi was enjoying a nice walk around the harbor from San Francisco including the over the world know Fisherman's Wharf! This picture is an HDR. We tried not to overdo the HDR effect in this one and just use the HDR to make more details visible. Also Domi really loved the sky in this picture and the HDR effect makes the sky more interesting. We hope that you like the picture. Stay tuned for more pictures from Domi's holidays in the United States and from a shooting from us which has been completed on sunday the first August! Thanks yours Domi & Dani
