Turkey - Istanbul - Colorful Fatih

Turkey - Istanbul - Colorful Fatih
Made by Darrell Godliman
For my regular Contacts who've been wondering where I've been for a couple of weeks, the answer is the Slovenian Mountains and the Croatian Coast. Photos from the trip to follow shortly so for now you'll have to settle for a couple of neglected shots from Istanbul a couple of years ago. The Fatih District of Istanbul is a little off the beaten track despite being right in the middle of the city. If you're visiting I'd recommend a wander round as it's wonderfully colourful, even on a dull day. From Wikipedia : Fatih (English: Conqueror) is one of the largest and central districts of Istanbul, Turkey, in the heart of the city. Since it constitutes the old quarter of the city that was taken by Mehmed the Conqueror on May 29, 1453, even today it is also called the real Istanbul or the first Istanbul (previously, the district of Eminönü at the tip of the historic peninsula was also a part of the Fatih district. Today, the districts of Fatih and Eminönü comprise the historic peninsula up to the Theodosian land walls at the western end of the old city center, i.e. the areas which together constituted the Byzantine capital Constantinople.) Fatih sits within the Roman walls, is home to the Fatih Mosque, the first Ottoman imperial mosque in Istanbul, and the second prominent Ottoman mosque in the city after the Eyüp Sultan Mosque which is just outside the land walls, near the Golden Horn. Since it is the primary historical area of the city, it contains some of the most important historical monuments in Istanbul.

The mystical light of Hagia Sophia, Istanbul

The mystical light of Hagia Sophia, Istanbul

Sailing to Byzantium That is no country for old men. The young In one another's arms, birds in the trees - Those dying generations - at their song, The salmon-falls, the mackerel-crowded seas, Fish, flesh, or fowl, commend all summer long Whatever is begotten, born, and dies. Caught in that sensual music all neglect Monuments of unageing intellect. An aged man is but a paltry thing, A tattered coat upon a stick, unless Soul clap its hands and sing, and louder sing For every tatter in its mortal dress, Nor is there singing school but studying Monuments of its own magnificence; And therefore I have sailed the seas and come To the holy city of Byzantium. O sages standing in God's holy fire As in the gold mosaic of a wall, Come from the holy fire, perne in a gyre, And be the singing-masters of my soul. Consume my heart away; sick with desire And fastened to a dying animal It knows not what it is; and gather me Into the artifice of eternity. Once out of nature I shall never take My bodily form from any natural thing, But such a form as Grecian goldsmiths make Of hammered gold and gold enamelling To keep a drowsy Emperor awake; Or set upon a golden bough to sing To lords and ladies of Byzantium Of what is past, or passing, or to come. -- William Butler Yeats (2006)

Istanbul - Büyük Valide Han

Istanbul - Büyük Valide Han
Made by Kalsa (m.a.mondini)
Büyük Valide Han İn the 17th century the mother of Sultan Murat IV, Kosem Valide Sultan ordered to built the Büyük Valide Han. The biggest and oldest han of Istanbul has 366 rooms. The Valide Han was the trade centre of the Iranian who have established themselves there previoly. Earlier the Iranian owned the stores there, but currently not as much as they used to. An Armenian, in 1567, has opened the first Armenian print office there. The Iranian continued this habbit. The religious state officers could not decide whether the Koran should be printed or not, the Iranian however began to print the koran illegally. Later one started also to print popular books illegally. When the publishers mentioned the text “without a stamp the books are fake”, the printing offices in the Valide Han did the same. The Han is still continuing its mission. The Han has 3 courtyards what is uncommon in the hans of istanbul. The Han is located in Çakmakçılar Yokuşu in Eminönü www.allinistanbul.com/?p=514 it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caravanserraglio Explore 30.09.2010 - #95 ( 01.10.2010)at 16.51 pm)

I. The Basilica Cistern (Turkish: Yerebatan Sarayı - Sunken Palace, or Yerebatan Sarnıcı - Sunken Cistern), is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns that lie beneath the city of Istanbul (formerly Constantinople), Turkey. The cistern, located 500 feet (150 m) southwest of the Hagia Sophia on the historical peninsula of Sarayburnu, was built in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I.

X Well back from Istanbul now totally exhausted, but what an amazing city. Had to use a shot of Haghia Sophia as it was the first place I visited. It is surely one of the most extraordinary buildings in the world. It was constructed as a church by the emperor Justinian in 537 AD and demonstrates the skill of building in the byzantine world in the 6th century. Almost impossible to imagine it still stands over the city 1,400 after it was built. It was converted into a mosque in the fifteenth century it is now a museum. Many thanks to Mabsuuta for all her travel advice. The shot was taken with the use of my well travelled tripod without flash I will make every effort to catch up with all your recent posts and I hope you are all well THANKS FOR YOUR VISIT HAVE A GREAT DAY To see keithhull's Most Interesting Photos on Flickriver

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Big Bazaar, kapalı çarşı in turkish, is a very interesting place, because it is a covered mall built at midel ages: lot of narrow streets and little shops full of things to sale. Thanks for the sponsorship of Veni Vidi Travel... www.venividitravel.com/ Sultan Ahmed Mosque, known as the Blue Mosque by many tourists because of its bluish interior decoration, is the most important mosque of Istanbul standing next to the Byzantine Hippodrome in the old city center. It was built by the Ottoman sultan Ahmed I between 1609 - 1616 facing Hagia Sophia, in order to compete with it. Its architect was Sedefkar Mehmet Aga, a poet and inlayer as well, and a student of the greatest architect Sinan. When Ahmed I died in 1617, he was buried near the mosque and a mausoleum was built over his tomb.
