Starry, Starry Night

Starry, Starry Night
Made by wade in da water
I took the title from this beautiful song: Vincent about Vincent Van Gough by Don McClean. My tribute. www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkvLq0TYiwI www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsePsTEgiqU A beautiful rendition by Chet Atkins Starry, starry night Paint your palette blue and gray Look out on a summer’s day With eyes that know the darkness in my soul… Shadows on the hills Sketch the trees and the daffodils Catch the breeze and the winter chills In colours on the snowy linen land. Now I understand What you tried to say, to me And how you suffered for your sanity And how you tried to set them free: They would not listen; they did not know how – Perhaps they’ll listen now. Starry, starry night Flaming flowers that brightly blaze Swirling clouds in violet haze Reflect in Vincent’s eyes of china blue Colours changing hue Morning fields of amber grain Weathered faces lined in pain Are soothed beneath the artist’s loving hand. Now I understand What you tried to say, to me And how you suffered for your sanity And how you tried to set them free: They would not listen; they did not know how– Perhaps they’ll listen now. For they could not love you But still, your love was true And when no hope was left inside On that starry, starry night You took your life as lovers often do– But I could’ve told you, Vincent: This world was never meant For one as beautiful as you. Starry, Starry night Portraits hung in empty halls Frameless heads on nameless walls With eyes that watch the world and can’t forget Like the strangers that you’ve met The ragged men in ragged clothes The silver thorn, a bloody rose Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow. Now I think I know What you tried to say, to me And how you suffered for your sanity And how you tried to set them free: They would not listen; they’re not listening still– Perhaps they never will. ~Don McLean Polaroid SX-70

Gold Billboard

Gold Billboard

2 ounces of Real Gold on a Billboard on 4th Avenue in Vancouver is guarded by full-time security. _________________________________________________________________ (from an article found on The World Gold Council Website www.gold.org/news/2010/05/27/story/14838/gold_leaf_billbo... Thursday, 27th May 2010 A 200 square foot billboard entirely covered with 22-c gold leaf has been unveiled in Vancouver, British Columbia. The sign will adorn the entrance to the city's Granville Island - under 24-hour guard - until it is transported to the Science World interactive museum tomorrow (May 28th) , where it will form part of a new exhibition, Metro Vancouver reports. Carson Ting of Rethink Communications, the firm behind the billboard, said that the gold leaf is worth between C$6,000 and C$7,000 It took master gilder Brian Dedora over a week to coat the sign using a 20-metre roll of gold foil. Just 1.98 ounces of ultra-thin gold leaf covers the entire billboard, the site noted. Indeed, the coating is so delicate that anyone thinking of helping themselves to a piece of genuine gold foil would be disappointed, Mr Ting said. [It] is so thin that if you tried to hack away at it, it would disintegrate into thin air, he added. Science World is currently showing Gold Fever, a film that explores uses of the precious metal around the globe from a giant gold Buddha to the Royal Canadian Mint's collection of gold bars.

False Creek Transit

False Creek Transit
Made by ecstaticist
Please...large | Pseudo HDR fom a single RAW file captured while diverting from our normal approach to Vancouver en route from Victoria. This is an unusual perspective. Normally we approach from either East or West. We were on the eastern approach, but warnings of wind shear sent us to the western approach at the last minute. I was sitting in the co-pilot seat and heard the diversion directive on the headset. So we flew along False Creek for a bit before rounding Stanley Park and making our landing behind the skyscrapers on the horizon that rim Coal Harbor. Note the new giant Shangrila is literally in the clouds. This perspective is looking North along Granville street. On this side of the bridge is Granville Island, a very cool place to visit when you come to Vancouver, which I hope my photos will make you want to do. [A new ecstaticist feature] PP notes: I overdid the noise reduction. I have a low tolerance for noise and this means I sacrifice detail, which might not always be the right decision. I think I need to learn more about layering and masking so I can remove noise in areas and keep detail in other areas. Suggestions are welcome for my own learning and other who read below. You can see what I mean in the larger and original sizes.

False Creek Squatter's Boat

False Creek Squatter's Boat
Made by Qole Pejorian
This is one of the most colourful squatter boats on False Creek in Vancouver. It has a big rusty stove-pipe, a stack of old foam insulation on the roof (along with various other random bits of flotsam), and what seems like dozens of old bikes stacked around the boat. I couldn't find the boat in its usual position, but I came across it near the shore close to Monk's. As I was taking photos, the owner (a man with a black beret with a silver dog broach, and a greying goatee) came up to me and told me how, while he was at his studio in Strathcona, his three mooring lines had been cut by someone and his skiff (pulled up on the shore) had been set adrift. He had to rescue his drifting boat and moor it off the beach. His boat had been in the same spot for two years, but he didn't even have any legal recourse, because the squatters have been ordered to leave False Creek by the City. See UPDATE below!

Olympic Gold for Canada

Olympic Gold for Canada
Made by Ron Hanko
Every night during the Olympics there is a fireworks show in the Yaletown area of Vancouver as part of the festivities there. If Canada has won gold that day, then there are gold fireworks that are part of the display. These three shots were taken on Monday evening, February 22, the night Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue won gold in the Ice Dancing Finals. The second picture shows some of the gold-colored fireworks that were part of the celebration that evening. Notice, too, the reflections of the fireworks in the windows of the downtown office buildings in the first and especially the third pictures. All these pictures were taken from the balconey of our daughter's apartment near Vancouver General Hospital.

Today was a weird day 365-wise. I normally take my photo at night, or late afternoon. Don't know why, but I grabbed the camera this morning and took a couple of shots in the bathroom (see my outtake). Liked them, decided they were going to be my SP for today, and left home without my camera. I spent most of the day thinking that I still needed to take today's photo. Then again, this isn't even similar to what I thought I was going to post - I just liked how the eyes turned out in one of the B&W layers of my outtake, did a copy paste of them, and started playing with them from there. I wish I had a more interesting eye color.

Science World is a self-supporting non-profit organization, which stimulates positive attitudes towards science and technology in a fun interactive environment, promoting the development of a knowledge-based society in British Columbia. The Cambie Street Bridge is a six lane bridge in Vancouver, British Columbia crossing False Creek. The Cambie Street Bridge is the easternmost crossing of False Creek, the other two bridges crossing False Creek are the Granville Street Bridge and the Burrard Street Bridge which ends less than a kilometer to the east. It opened in 1984 and replaced an older swing span bridge.

Seen on route 9 on Broadway westbound yesterday. These buses are now here in significant numbers and are appearing on a larger number of routes as a result. I suppose I should be recording the last days of the E902s, but I suspect that pressure of demand will keep some in service for a while longer (I hope so anyway). Taking pictures of a moving bus in poor light in heavy traffic presents some interesting challenges and I am afraid that the Coolpix 4800 is not the best bit of equipment for dealing with them. This image is nowhere near as sharp as I would like.

(2/365) :: Barefoot

(2/365) :: Barefoot
Made by chispita_666
I'm always barefoot when I'm home. Always. Well, except maybe if it's cold, in which case I'll leave socks on. This thoroughly used to piss my mother off, but she's given up on getting me to wear shoes inside. It's also led me to breaking my small toe (on my right foot) not once but twice, hitting it against a doorframe - it is now forever bigger and at an angle; it doesn't hurt, so whatever. The downside is that my feet end up picking all the dirt that's on the floor, sometimes ending totally black. Since I can't see the soles of my feet, I don't care.

Corvus brachyrhynchos A little spring snow shower this morning. I believe he was keeping himself warm on top of this chimney. Not long after this shot. He noticed me and flew off. it means heat escaping from a poorly insulated house, thus warming the local bird population. The exact Finnish expression is lämpöä harakoille, literally heat for the magpies. JohntheFinn ~ Thank you John youtube.com/watch?v=JUnI9GcON-s&feature=related

wow, I'm all grown up. I've been on an emotional rollercoaster for the past few days, i had to end something that was very precious to me for 8 years, but i blame no one but myself, for being so silly. this photo was inspired by sifting through my wardrobe for an outfit to wear on saturday night and i managed to accessorize with whatever i could find in my jewlery box. i seriously need to get a tripod to support me taking more creative photos than just boring headshots.

Glow of Night

Glow of Night
Made by RainPacket
A nighttime shot of buildings across the water from where my friend lives. Looks best . I shot this at nearly midnight with my beloved 'nifty fifty' lens, at f/6.3 and ISO 100, and a 30 second exposure. The low ISO gave me a very smooth image... in truth, the long exposure made the scene far, far brighter in the image than it was in reality. The lights were pretty, but the details of the buildings were mostly obscured to the naked eye, and the sky looked entirely black.

Give me another kiss before you go

Give me another kiss before you go
Made by The Blackbird
This is my dad. He's 81. He's in hospital recovering from vascular surgery to repair an artery in his wrist to improve the blood flow to his hand. The procedure required the removal and transplant of an artery from his thigh. I can't remember the last time I kissed my dad. But when I walked into his room and saw him as you see him here, I gave him a kiss near his temple. As I left, an hour or so later, he asked me to kiss him again.

Fairview Slopes view of downtown Vancouver, BC about 1971. The Granville Street Bridge is at the far left and the False Creek Industrial Area is visible. Grouse Mountain is clearly visible in the background. There are few buildings or trees obscuring the view. This was probably taken on Alder Street just below Broadway. The fenced cars were probably parked at one of the car sales lots in that area.

I'll be moving to Montreal in March, seems like a set fact. the decision was made a week ago and i bought the ticket two days ago. I have a month and a half to get rid of all my stuff, nothing i will miss. I'm only anxious to see how well i will endure the end of a relationship, language barrier, job hunt in the middle of an economic crisis, and being 3700km away from friends and family....

Boats under a Vancouver sky

Boats under a Vancouver sky
Made by Eric Flexyourhead
I've been meeting up with everyday since his Vancouver vacation began on Tuesday. This time we walked to the south shore of False Creek... something that I do very often, but I can't recall walking there with a sky this amazing. The funny thing is that we've had these incredible skies every day since Kiyoshi-san arrived in Vancouver. Leg-in-Boot Square, Vancouver, BC. September 3, 2009.

At 1.8 kilometres in length, the demonstration Olympic Line isn't very long... but it is quite cool. And at 9:00 am on a Sunday morning, it was also really quiet. I just hope that it can be kept and expanded upon after the Olympics have left Vancouver. February 7, 2010.
