Euromast
The Euromast is a tower in Rotterdam constructed between 1958 and 1960, designed by H.A. Maaskant. It was specially built for the 1960 Floriade. It is a concrete building with an internal diameter of 9 m and a wall thickness of 30 cm. For stability is it built on a concrete block of 1,900,000 kg so that the centre of gravity is below ground. It has a "crow's nest" observation platform 96 metres above-ground and a restaurant. Originally 101 metres in height it was the tallest building in Rotterdam. It lost this position for a while, but regained it when the "Space Tower" was added to the top of the building in 1970, giving an additional 85 metres. Vanaf de Mullerpier De Euromast is ter gelegenheid van de Floriade in 1960 door architect H.A. Maaskant en aannemer J.P. van Eesteren geplaatst in het Park vlak bij de ingang van de Maastunnel. De locatie was strategisch gekozen: wie naar Rotterdam reed over de toenmalige snelwegen zag de 107 meter (incl vlaggenmast) hoge toren recht voor zich boven de stad uitsteken. Maar de stad groeide en de gebouwen werden hoger en na enkele jaren rezen gebouwen boven de Euromast uit. In 1970 is een 85 meter hoge opbouw op de Euromast geplaatst genaamd de Space Tower waarmee de Euromast weer het hoogste bouwwerk van Rotterdam werd. Situated in the Rotterdam park, near Parkhaven, this tall structure dates from 1960. Euromast was erected at the time of the World Horticultural Exhibition - the Floriade. Its terrace, at a height of 100 m, offers a splendid view over the city. The Space Tower is a shaft 185 m tall on which an external circular lift is mounted. From this glassed-in ring 32 people can enjoy a panorama stretching 30 km in all directions; by night the effect is enchanting.
