- Fisheries and Maritime Museum, The Fisheries and Maritime Museum is the largest institution of its kind in Denmark focusing on Danish fisheries and marine biology, the tidal wetlands (Wadden Sea), west coastal shipping and the North Sea offshore industries. So the theme of the museum can truly be said to be "people and the sea"

Utzon’s Mushrooms in Esbjerg
Made by Photolab.AJ (catching up with "you" quite soon!!)
This is the entrance of the Musikhuset in Esbjerg, a harbor city on the rugged west coast of Denmark. It’s a performing arts centre and was designed by the architects Jan and Jørn Utzon. To quote Jan Utzon: Our intention was to design a building complex that, together with the city park and harbor area would create a festive frame around the artists and the audience; a building that architecturally would give Esbjerg a new identifiable element in the city. The building is situated in the City Park next to the Art Exhibition building with a wide view over the harbor and the sea. The light and airy foyer, with its tall slim columns behind the polygonal window panes, is like an open room in the city. The design of the entrance Plaza and Foyer, inspired by the trees in the surrounding City Park, is formed as a forest of Mushroom columns that organically tie the various functions together. The columns are designed as prefabricated concrete elements with the upper parts of steel, wood or plate construction. Perhaps the name Utzon has rang bell with some people. Indeed, Jørn Utzon is the Danish architect who designed the world famous Sydney Opera House. Although Jørn designed many buildings, the Opera House was his international break-through. Therefore, it’s was very unfortunate that he found himself in conflict with the Australian Government about the escalating cost for the project. Things heated-up quickly. At the opening of the Opera House (in 1973), the architect was not invited to the ceremony, or was his name mentioned. Jan Utzon is the son of Jørn. This photo is composed of seven individual shots. They were merged by using PS and some other tools at my disposal.

Man meets the Sea

Explore # 290 The Men or Man at Sea (Danish: Mennesket ved Havet) is a monument of four 9 metre (30 feet) tall white males, located north of Esbjerg by Sædding Beach on the south-west coast of Denmark. It is located opposite the Fisheries and Maritime Museum, and is one of the area's major tourist attractions, and it is a famous landmark of Esbjerg. The sculpture was designed by Svend Wiig Hansen and installed on 28th October 1995. It was funded by the government of Esbjerg Kommune, the Kunstfond government and private sponsors to inaugurate the 100th anniversary of the municipality in 1994. The artist's original idea for the location of the sculpture was Grenen, north of Skagen. The monument can be seen by ferry leaving or entering Esbjerg.

Night Shift
Made by dans le grand bleu
Taken just after sunset on the way home. Just got attracted by the sparks coming from underneath the blue tarp. they formed a nice contrast with the drifting ice all around the rig. This is the Noble Byron Welliver, currently under refurbishment in Esbjerg harbour. Had to handhold the shot, as the high harbour wall made it impossible to put up a tripod... So, while high ISO performance of the K10D is not great, the image stabilizer certainly is :-) Pentax K10D, Sigma 17-70mm @ 17, f3.5, 1/6 sec, ISO 280. Man meets the Sea

View On Black Man meets the Sea is a 9m. tall monument erected near the enterance to Esbjerg harbour, Denmark. It's made in white concrete by the Danish sculpturer Svend Wiig Hansen in 1995. Getting this shot took a while. It was an overcast day, and numerous photographs turned out dull, to say the least. Suddenly the overcast broke up, and for just a few minutes the sun cast beautiful light on the statues.

"Mennesket ved havet" # II from VI

Location: Esbjerg/Denmark Kamera: Nikon D80/ Swedish Sculptor Svend Wiig’s impressive Mennesket ved Havet (Man Meets the Sea) towers over the beach north of Esbjerg. The sculpture depicts the pure unadulterated encounter of the human race with the forces of nature – before the sea rises up and starts to “take action”. The identical faces stare across the sea, creating an almost divine impression. On a clear day, the nine-metre-high sculpture can be seen at a distance of ten kilometres.

Pilot
Made by dans le grand bleu
After all those grey days, we had an incredible sunset, yesterday. Raced to the harbour and was just in the process of setting up the camera on the tripod with ND grad filters, when the pilot boat came out. Had no time to put the nd grads on, but tried to capture the scene as well as possible. Pentax K10D, Sigma 17-70 @ 17mm, 1/60 sec, f 4.5, ISO 100. Best viewed large on black with B l a c k M a g i c

There's a stormfront coming...
Made by dans le grand bleu
View On Black ...and there really was a stormfront coming as well... Skandi Fjord moored in Esbjerg harbour with the Fanø ferry in the background. I had no tripod, and it was really hard to keep the camera relatively stable, but the sky was too good to miss. Shot a whole series of pictures , but this is one of my favourites.

Fiery skies
Made by dans le grand bleu
Taken just after sunset at the entrance to the fisheries harbour in Esbjerg. Part of the Esbjerg is beautiful series :-) Had just packed up, and quickly unpacked again when I saw the sky... Only applied sharpening and tweaked the exposure slightly, the red colour actually was like this... Best viewed large on black with B l a c k M a g i c

MAN MEETS THE SEA (DENMARK – JUTLAND PENINSULA – ESBJERG)

A noble rig...

The Noble Byron Welliver jackup rig waiting to be upgraded by SEMCO Maritime outside Esbjerg harbour. Went for a short photo excursion with vindoe40 last Sunday. The very grey weather really only allowed for B&W photography. HDR from three shots processed in Photomatix. Best viewed large on black with B l a c k M a g i c

B&W conversion done in Adobe Lightroom, with emphasis on the dramatic sky and the contrast between the children and the statues. Constructive critisicm is most welcome... Flow towards the sunset
Made by dans le grand bleu
A panorama from three 30sec exposures (Pentax K10D, F22, ISO 100, Sigma 17-70 lens at 48mm). taken from Esbjerg harbour. Had to be stitched manually, as no panorama software could cope with the long exposure and the movement of drifting ice sheets... This really has to be seen large on black with B l a c k M a g i c

Trusty lifeboat
Made by dans le grand bleu
Finally got out with the camera again... Abandoned (a very long time ago, by the looks of it) clinker life boat on a dumpsite in Esbjerg harbour. A beautiful boat which would probably take a long time to restore... HDR from three exposures, processed in Photomatix. View on black with B l a c k M a g i c

Esbjerg Frysehus

Evening sun over a freezer warehouse in Esbjerg harbour. This is the first of a series all taken on the same evening in the same light. Taken in winter, but had no chance to get out with the camera in the last few weeks when spring finally arrived... Best viewed large on black with B l a c k M a g i c

Blue afternoon
Made by dans le grand bleu
The first sunny day in a long time. Went for a short walk on our local beach which still looks a lot more like Greenland rather than Denmark... Pentax K10D, Sigma 17-70 @ 17mm, f16, 1/45, ISO 100. Cokin Circular Polarizer and 3stop ND Grad. Best viewed large on black with B l a c k M a g i c

Hair

FILM A really old picture from me... back in 1998, with my first SLR....(some crappy SLR with a crappy lense, but that's all I could afford as a teenager). Wanted to crop the bottom away....so the upper half looked like long hair. But 180 degree turn did the same job :-) It's actually the road to my school back then. Hope you see the idea here :-)

Long exposure of the sunset over the Danish North Sea Island Fanø. The shot is taken from Esbjerg. the pattern in the sea is caused by drifting ice sheets in the tidal stream in the passage between the mainland and the island. Best viewed large on black with B l a c k M a g i c
