The Harp and The Organ

make beautiful music. I'm not particularly fond of this, but I needed a picture to go with my story. Anyway, this past Friday I was working in a professional capacity as the official photographer for the Mount Royal choirs at their annual Christmas in Song concert at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. They performed with the Calgary Youth Orchestra a few times, which was really cool. The Heebee-Jeebees were also there and they were pretty funny. It was actually really fun. It was a really good experience. The lighting in that place is really weird. It's good and yet it's not. The highest shutter speed I could get was like 1/10, which really sucks when you're shooting kids that are singing and such. I got some good shots though I think. I also became quite familiar with the backstage areas of the Jack Singer. It was a long day (I was there from 3:30 PM to like 11PM), but it was worth it. You can watch the Mount Royal Choirs and the Calgary Youth Orchestra perform Handel's Hallelujah Chorus from The Messiah here: ca.youtube.com/watch?v=fk545dDwZpU Make sure to watch it in HD. Some interesting facts about Carthy Organ pictured above: The combination of the Carthy Organ and the special acoustical qualities of the Jack Singer Concert Hall represent a resource that is truly world class. Carlo Curley has called the Carthy Organ “one of the ten great organs of the world,” and “the finest concert organ in North America.” (Note: I just realized that I have an extensive collection of Bach organ works recorded by Carlo Curley and let me just say, he is great.) It has 6040 pipes. The largest pipes are made of oak, the smaller of zinc/lead alloy and the horizontal trumpet pipes are made of polished copper. Laid end to end, the pipes total the same distance as the length of the English Channel All this information came from the MRC site on the Carthy Organ, which can be found here.

Here is one of a small group of people protesting against Gore. If you're arguing someone is being non-scientific, then calling them a bore doesn't seem to be an appropriate means of arguement. I'm not fully sold on Gore's position, but I thought the anti-Gore foks here did a pretty poor job, providing virtually no facts that were both verifiable and relevant. They made a few biting critiques of Gore (e.g. his exorbitant speaking fees and massive personal waste of resources) but those criticisms have nothing to do with what causes global warming. This is one of the photos taken on April 23, 2007 outside the Jack Singer Concert Hall of the Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts. I happened by people arriving for a speech inside by Al Gore and a group of Anti-Gore protesters.

Leading the Royal Motocade

Calgary police leading the royal motorcade to the starting point at 9th AVE and 3rd ST SE. I staked claim to my front row spot on 9th AVE and Macleod TR. SE shortly after 6am for an unobstructed view. I also hoped that being there I could leave as soon as the motorcade has passed by. To my surprise we were told that they would pass in front of us twice -- once on the way to the start and then during the actual parade at 8:30am. By 8am there were still no barricades put up. That could only mean security would be quite heavy along the route. Late as expected, the motorcade did not sneak up until around 8:40am. There was barely any noise until I heard people cheering. And all of the sudden, there were these Calgary Police motorcycles.

This friendly gentleman is a long time seller of Street Talk which is sold for whatever people wish to pay, and is focussed on solving poverty, by its content, and providing an income source to its distributors. Probably a great location for business, given the large number of people who came for the event, including a lot of wealthy people. Shutting down the Calgary Community Lottery Board

Shutting down the Calgary Community Lottery Board
Made by Grant Neufeld
On March 28, 2002, the final public meeting of the Calgary Community Lottery Board was held to discuss the provincial government's decision to shut it down. All in-progress funding proposals were arbitrarily stopped so the government could have more direct control of funding allocations - taking it away from the communities across the province. If I'm recalling correctly, the boxes in front of the tables were the files for the funding proposals/requests that were to be immediately halted. There were a lot of extremely frustrated people at the meeting (including the board members behind the table).

Andree Lau reports for the CBC. Although you can't tell from the picture, the CBC used a very intense light from a fare distance from the entrance. If you're looking (or shooting) in that direction, it could be annoying. Emily Murphy

She submitted her name for consideration of a Senate seat in 1927 and was dismissed on the grounds of not being a qualified person as indicated in the British North America Act. After recruiting four friends to sign a petition, she asked the Canadian Supreme court to decided if women were considered persons and allow her to run for Senate. The Supreme Court heard her case and later ruled that the word person did not include women; thus beginning Canadian suffrage.

We're off to see the Wizard!

We're off to see the Wizard!

My wife surprised me with tickets to the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra's showing of the Wizard of Oz. The movie was accompanied by a live orchestra so it was quite a different way of seeing it. Some people, like these folks, went all out and dressed up for the movie. I think these guys were the best by far.

Racism Sucks (IMG2_8309)

There was a racism rally here in Calgary today. A lot of people came out to try and foster acceptance, despite being accosted a little by those who would rather see our population deteriorate to a single colour. All bleed red. Location: Downtown, Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

What I thought here is how confident the builders were, making their office entrance sign of this bank building in stone. Talk about being carved in stone! The building is one of (I believe) terra cotta clad buildings in Calgary. Beautiful and ornate. So rare in Calgary.

The City of Calgary white hatted Dave Brubeck near the end of the concert. I had put away my camera because I was only allowed to shoot the first three songs, so I quickly pulled it out to get a shot, but it's not very good.

Haven't been in downtown Calgary for a while, but noticed this today on a stop I had to make. Looks like the guerilla knitters have struck again! Nice knitting!
