Ol' Blue Eyes
Made by vgm8383
View On Black A close-up view of an African Daisy. For the botanically inclined, here is the Wiki entry: The scientific name is derived from the Greek osteon (= bone) and Latin spermum (= seed). It has been given several common names: African Daisy, South African Daisy, Cape Daisy and Blue-eyed Daisy. There are about 50 species, native to Africa, 35 species in southern Africa, and southwestern Arabia. They are half-hardy perennials or subshrubs. Therefore they do not survive outdoor wintery conditions, but there is still a wide range of hardiness. Their alternate (rarely opposite) leaves are green, but some beautiful variegated forms exist. The leaf form is lanceolate. The leaf margin is entire, but hardy types are toothed. The daisy-like flowers consists of disc florets and ray florets, growing solitary at the end of branches or sometimes in inflorescences of terminal corymbose cymes. The disc florets are pseudo-bisexual and come in several colors such as blue, yellow and purple. The hardy types usually show a dark blue center in the disc until the yellow pollen is shed. The ray florets are female and are found diverse colors such as white, cream, pink, purple, mauve to yellow. Some cultivars have spooned petals such as Pink Whirls. Many species flower a second time late summer, stimulated by the cooler night temperatures. Hardy types show profuse flowering in the spring, but they do not get a second flush of flowers.

Cherry Blossom [Explored #9]
Made by japa_justin
Model: Lynn Ho Photographer: Me! [Justin Nakagiri] =] Hey everyone, Spring is here! I'm loving college and the new experiences but it feels good to be home for spring break. The cherry blossoms at Balboa Park are in bloom and they are beautiful. If you're in the SoCal area you should check them out for sure. Spring Break is here and the first thing that I did was have a photoshoot with my friend Lynn! =] This is the first of probably quite a few from this photoshoot that I'm going to post on here so look forward to that! =] Any comments and suggestions would be appreciated. Lake Balboa Park- Kayak
Made by kay's kamera
Saturday had killer clouds and there was just no way I wanted to miss the show. Walked around the lake and in less than 35 min. I took 150 pictures. Met this man going out in the parks Kayak and I needed to know all about it. The life guards said I had to go to a city park, and wearing pants, and a top tread water for 10 min. Heck I can do that. I always thought this man made lake was very shallow but they said that in the middle it's 15 ft. deep. I was very excited to do this so when my husband came home from his college football game (they lost :o( ) I said Wouldn't that be fun to do? He looked at me sceptically, and said... Why don't YOU do it, and then tell me about it Well... I'm going to do it!!

Great Egret
Made by Life of David
It was a beautiful fall day at the Sepulveda Basin Wild Life Preserve. 72 degrees and clear blue skies with occasional cloud patches passing by made for a great day for taking photos. Many new birds had come to the reserve on their migratory path. I had not seen many of these birds for six months or more. I took more than 200 photos of the folliage, insects and birds. I wished that I had brought a different longer lens with all the activity. Fall and early winter are my favorite times of year in Los Angeles.

Here come those nasty gulls, again!
Made by Maureen Sullivan
Another shot of my Osprey that was being harassed by gulls. I liked the intent look on the bird's face in this picture, although none of the menacing gulls are in the shot. Tomorrow, Veterans Day in the US, my husband and I are going on a true wild goose chase. A Bean Goose has been reported at the Salton Sea in Imperial County. This goose is rare enough, that it isn't in any of my field guides, even as a once-every-few-years bird. Member of the Activists for birds and wildlife

Under Attack
Made by Maureen Sullivan
This Osprey was been harassed by five Western Gulls, as it sat perched atop a pine tree. I've seen crows, ravens and grackles gang up on raptors and owls before, but never gulls. Shouldn't be surprised, since gulls have always seemed to be pretty foul-tempered birds. After about five minutes of alternately looking worried or aggressive, the Osprey flew to a different tree. I was hoping he/she would grab one of the gulls, but no luck. Member of the Activists for birds and wildlife

Egyptian Geese, 2003-02-06 051 mod
Made by Anita363
These are an exotic species in the US. They seem to be breeding here, & will probably be considered naturalized at some point. It took me a while to ID them, but they were so striking I knew they had to be something special. Look for the beautiful colors hidden under those wings. These 2 (probably young ganders -- see very informative post from Robin Dude below) were in S CA in winter, but I have also seen them in NJ.

nothing holding you back
Made by salazar62
Just say yes, just say there's nothing holding you back It's not a test, nor a trick of the mind Only love - Just Say Yes (Snow Patrol) The blue-and-white color scheme is inspired by the music video for this song. Taken for week 42 of - Shallow DOF (though honestly I don't know if this qualifies as a shallow DOF shot or just a simple macro shot or those two are the same thing...) Explored #357 on October 23, 2009.

heather on the hills
Made by salazar62
This is dedicated to the wonderful Anthony Perkins. Heather on the Hills is one of his songs (yeah, he sang. He did more than just played Norman Bates, you know) - you can check it out here. Tony's birthday was last week (April 4), but it wasn't until this week that I found some heather on sale at a Trader Joe's, so here's to you, Tony.

hail the sunny days
Made by salazar62
Named after a song by Mando Diao. Well, so the weather got dry enough for me to take some pictures for week 12 of - Spring. I just find it so ironic that the week we got a spring assignment, Mother Nature just decided to play one big prank on us and sent snow or rain all over the place. I haven't done a macro flower shoot in a while. I kinda miss it.

Lake at the Japanese Garden
Made by Images by Laszlo
This is an HDR created from a single RAW file. Taken at the Japanese Garden in Van Nuys, CA . The building in the background is actually the admin building for one of Los Angeles' water treatment facilities which is located adjacent to the garden. Shot with a canon EOS 5D MkII and 24-105 L series lens with a circular polarizer filter.

iridescent
Made by salazar62
Named after a song by Linkin Park in their new album A Thousand Suns. Though I have to admit that this album sounds nothing like the band I fell in love with back in high school, the funny thing is, their music has sort of grown with me during the years, so while I still love LP's old stuff, I love their new sound as well!

Dinner
Made by Sergey Sus
We had a Hanukkah dinner at friends house and they also have a Christmas tree up. I managed to sneak a photo of the table. Those are delicious pickles in the middle. Can Flickr Make you a Better photographer?

softly through my atmosphere
Made by salazar62
And I do believe it's true That there are roads left in both of our shoes But if the silence takes you Then I hope it takes me too So brown eyes I hold you near 'Cause you're the only song I want to hear A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere - Soul Meets Body (Death Cab For Cutie)

Early Bloomer
Made by rianklong
Since I was in the area on Saturday, I stopped by Lake Balboa to check on the cherry trees that line the lake. There were definitely blossoms to be found, but not large amounts. Full bloom is still a few weeks away. Photo taken at Lake Balboa in Anthony C. Beilenson park. Los Angeles, CA (USA).

a little bird told me
Made by salazar62
OK, I have to admit, I didn't take this picture with this week's (Idioms) in mind. But as I was looking for a title for this shot, the phrase a little bird told me came up, and I thought, Hey, it's an idiom! - so I posted it for Assignment52 anyway. Explored #499 on March 23, 2010.

yellow
Made by salazar62
A song by Coldplay - the obvious choice. No this isn't the same ladybug whose pictures I've been posting, but he's pretty close by. UPDATE: I pumped up the contrast of the ladybug a bit to make it stand out more from the flower's center, per my friend linhngan's suggestion.

where the wild things are
Made by salazar62
This is growing by a bus stop, can you believe it?! I'm not really happy with the composition because the flower in the middle doesn't stand out as much as I want, but... oh well. And I'm looking forward to Where the Wild Things Are the movie too. Spike Jonze is awesome!

a little princess
Made by salazar62
I just found this little stretch of pink and red poppies near my apartment building. It doesn't look like they're grown, but it's hard to believe that something so pretty could grow wild here in the middle of Los Angeles. Explored #399 on May 9, 2010. Thanks everyone!

mirrored freckles
Made by salazar62
I am thinking it's a sign That the freckles in our eyes are mirror images And when we kiss they're perfectly aligned - Such Great Heights (Iron and Wine) Well this song is orginally by The Postal Service, but I like the Iron and Wine version better.
