- Citicorp Center With its distinctive slanted roof and long, slender base columns, this building is another great skyscrpaper with a grand atrium
- MetLife Building Since it was built on it has been probably most hated building in New York, mostly because it rises up over Grand Central Station, completely blocking the view up Park Avenue, but it is a good example of modern architecture between 44th & 45th streets

Moon-lit
Made by jver64
Seen from the Empire State Building across the East River to Long Island and Queens. The moon was bright enough to shoot with ISO 100 and f/5, so noise and sharpness were much better under control. Tripods are not allowed at the Empire State Building, whose observation platform can get quite windy so this image was my best chance using the balustrade. By the way the three dots at the horizon as a rope of pearls are actually aircrafts departing JFK International Airport. Amazing view.

B-25 vs Empire State
Made by Hawk914
Project 914 Archives (Corbis image) This incident occurred 61 years ago this July 28th. Here's the accompanying caption for this image: A view of the hole rammed into the 78th and 79th stories of the Empire State Building by a U.S. Army Bomber flying in the fog. Part of the wreckage hangs from the 78th story, New York, New York, July 28, 1945. The bomber was a North American B-25 Mitchell named 'Old John Feather Merchant'. The 3 crewmembers on the aircraft and 11 others were killed. The following is an account from a fella named Bill Larkins, who was present on the day: I lived in the McAlpin Hotel at 34th and Broadway for a year and had probably been there about seven months by the time of the accident. I was at the time a Corporal in the AAF and assigned to the AAF Training Aids Division at One Park Avenue. We worked six days a week so I was on my way to work on the Saturday morning. I was just coming down in the elevator and getting off on the ground floor when the whole thing seemed to shake and there was a loud boom. We went out into the street to see what was happening but as I remember nobody knew anything. At one point we could see a hole with smoke coming out of it in the Empire State Building (the 34th Street side) and had no idea why. The rumors were that it was a bomb. The fog settled back down and you could no longer see the hole. Luckily it was a Saturday morning or the death toll would have been very high as almost all of the offices were empty. I walked to work down 34th Street and don't remember any debris on the street. I think I didn't get back there until late afternoon and as I recall it was roped off and you could not get near the building. I don't think that I found out that it had been an airplane until the next day when the New York Times came out. It's hard for young people today to understand, with instant news on TV and the Internet, but we not only did not have television I didn't have a radio. If anyone would like to listen to an MP3 of an original MBS news broadcast covering this incident, send me a message through flickr and I'll hook you up. Fade to Black...

"Chapter one - He adored New York City. He idolised it out of all proportion." (Explored)
Made by pollywaffle
' Chapter one. He adored New York City. He idolised it all out of proportion. Uh, no. Make that He romanticised it all out of proportion. To him, no matter what the season was, this was still a town that existed in black and white and pulsated to the great tunes of George Gershwin. Uh... no. Let me start this over. Chapter one. He was too romantic about Manhattan, as he was about everything else. He thrived on the hustle, bustle of the crowds and the traffic. To him, New York meant beautiful women and street-smart guys who seemed to know all the angles. ' Title taken from the opening dialogue of the Woody Allen film, Manhattan. Taken with my Pentax K1000 with my 28mm lens using Ilford HP5+ 35mm film. I really love the grain you get with this film! Printed with an Ilford Grade 5 Multigrade filter. Finally getting round to printing my photos from America! Taken on September 10th 2009. Only digital PP was to adjust levels to match the actual photo as my scanner reduces contrast. Taken from the observation deck of the Empire State Building. TWITTER I apologise for how long my descriptions have got recently. EXPLORED - #162

Midtown Blue Hour
Made by Rob Kroenert (Wiggum03)
I live in San Francisco, so New York City is a long way to go for a one-hour meeting. But what a great city to visit, even just for a quick work trip. My meeting was Monday morning, which meant I needed to fly on Sunday. I left really early with the idea of getting to the city in time for blue hour photos. My hotel was close to the Empire State Building, so after dropping off my bag I headed right up to the observation deck on the 86th floor and made it there well before sunset. Taking low-light shots from the Empire State Building’s observation deck is a little tricky. There are big crowds to deal with, of course, but the main problem is that tripods are prohibited. I tried some high-ISO handheld shots until it got pretty dark, then I switched to a variety of MacGyver-esque balancing acts that involved resting the camera on various ledges and awkwardly propping it into position with whatever miscellaneous objects I happened to have in my pockets. Turns out you can do a lot with a lens cap, an iPod, and a paperback book. This is the view looking north, with the Chrysler Building on the far right.

Manhattan at Night
Made by alpine.
From the Empire State Building observation deck. 3 Exposures, if i remember right they were, 2 second, 8 second and 20 seconds, but i set my camera to aperture priority mode, applied +-2ev autobracketing mode and let the camera do the rest. I was using one of those GorrillaPod bendy tripods, and 1/2 the long exposures were ruined because i didn't keep it steady enough, press the capture button very gently and then just leave the Camera alone! GorrillaPods are great, but you really have to be very careful when you need the camera to be as steady as possible, as they are designed to be versitile more than ultra-steady. The Empire state building is worth it, but only at Sunset/Night. I came early hoping to catch the sunset, which would have been ace, but unfortunately the queues were so bad (1.5 hours) that by the time i had battled my way through security, then the queue for tickets i had completely missed it and had to settle with night. I took a fair few good photos though so im happy.

Manhattan, INCEPTED
Made by friskypics
Manhattan. Incepted. This reminds me of the scene in INCEPTION, where Paris is turned up on itself. If you happen to land in New York's La Guardia airport, and the wind directions corporate - you will be in for quite a treat. In order to land from the North, the aircraft flies above Manhattan, around lower Manhattan, up the East River above Brooklyn and finally on to Queens to land in one of LGA's runways. Worth the price of a ticket! My window was more than a little dirty, but that wont stop me from posting this rather unique view of the Empire State Building. The plane is not tilted - it was incredibly difficult for me to get a good angle.

Seen from the 102nd floor of the Empire State Building. My first time up here was in as a tourist. Back then I knew very little of NYC and never thought I would live here. Now I have five years worth of memories of this city and know the downtown area I once observed at a glance as my own neighborhood. This will probably be my last time up here for a long time. It was good to have mom in town to get an excuse to make the trek up here one more time before I leave.

A panaroma composed of two images of midtown and upper Manhattan, taken from the Empire State at about 6:30pm. The main road that you see is the fifth avenue. The brite building straight ahead is the Rockefeller Center. The two images that it is composed of are probably the best photos that I have taken so far. Lacking a tripod, it was quite a challenge to take these 4 second exposure images. Manhattan, New York City, USA

A view from the Empire State Building of the glowing streets of 5th Avenue and Broadway. This an HDR from a single RAW exposure. I may have over processed this one. I re uploaded this 15 times before I was happy with the color and saturation. It doesn't look quite the same after it's been uploaded. If someone can give me some advice or a link on how to fix this it will be really appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges
Made by Rob Kroenert (Wiggum03)
I wish I could have taken some up-close photos of the venerable Brooklyn Bridge during my quick trip to NYC earlier this week. What a cool thing it is, and so different than the Golden Gate Bridge - gothic vs. art deco. I had to settle for this 400mm shot from the observation deck of the Empire State Building, with my camera balanced precariously on a ledge (no tripods allowed).
