The mystical light of Hagia Sophia, Istanbul
Made by eftimov-schenk-schwartz
Sailing to Byzantium That is no country for old men. The young In one another's arms, birds in the trees - Those dying generations - at their song, The salmon-falls, the mackerel-crowded seas, Fish, flesh, or fowl, commend all summer long Whatever is begotten, born, and dies. Caught in that sensual music all neglect Monuments of unageing intellect. An aged man is but a paltry thing, A tattered coat upon a stick, unless Soul clap its hands and sing, and louder sing For every tatter in its mortal dress, Nor is there singing school but studying Monuments of its own magnificence; And therefore I have sailed the seas and come To the holy city of Byzantium. O sages standing in God's holy fire As in the gold mosaic of a wall, Come from the holy fire, perne in a gyre, And be the singing-masters of my soul. Consume my heart away; sick with desire And fastened to a dying animal It knows not what it is; and gather me Into the artifice of eternity. Once out of nature I shall never take My bodily form from any natural thing, But such a form as Grecian goldsmiths make Of hammered gold and gold enamelling To keep a drowsy Emperor awake; Or set upon a golden bough to sing To lords and ladies of Byzantium Of what is past, or passing, or to come. -- William Butler Yeats (2006)

Istanbul - Büyük Valide Han
Made by Kalsa (m.a.mondini)
Büyük Valide Han İn the 17th century the mother of Sultan Murat IV, Kosem Valide Sultan ordered to built the Büyük Valide Han. The biggest and oldest han of Istanbul has 366 rooms. The Valide Han was the trade centre of the Iranian who have established themselves there previoly. Earlier the Iranian owned the stores there, but currently not as much as they used to. An Armenian, in 1567, has opened the first Armenian print office there. The Iranian continued this habbit. The religious state officers could not decide whether the Koran should be printed or not, the Iranian however began to print the koran illegally. Later one started also to print popular books illegally. When the publishers mentioned the text “without a stamp the books are fake”, the printing offices in the Valide Han did the same. The Han is still continuing its mission. The Han has 3 courtyards what is uncommon in the hans of istanbul. The Han is located in Çakmakçılar Yokuşu in Eminönü www.allinistanbul.com/?p=514 it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caravanserraglio Explore 30.09.2010 - #95 ( 01.10.2010)at 16.51 pm)

Hagia Sophia Istanbul........ For Mabsuuta
Made by keithhull
X Well back from Istanbul now totally exhausted, but what an amazing city. Had to use a shot of Haghia Sophia as it was the first place I visited. It is surely one of the most extraordinary buildings in the world. It was constructed as a church by the emperor Justinian in 537 AD and demonstrates the skill of building in the byzantine world in the 6th century. Almost impossible to imagine it still stands over the city 1,400 after it was built. It was converted into a mosque in the fifteenth century it is now a museum. Many thanks to Mabsuuta for all her travel advice. The shot was taken with the use of my well travelled tripod without flash I will make every effort to catch up with all your recent posts and I hope you are all well THANKS FOR YOUR VISIT HAVE A GREAT DAY To see keithhull's Most Interesting Photos on Flickriver

Ulu mabed! Seni ancak bu sabah anlıyorum; Ben de bir varisin olmakla bügün mağrurum; Bir zaman hendeseden abide zannettimdi; Kubben altında bu cumhura bakarken şimdi, Senelerden beri ru'yada görüp özlediğim Cedlerin mağfiret iklimine girmiş gibiyim. Blue in the Blue Mosque

The sun came out finally in Istanbul after a long period of cold and cloud, just in time to capture this beaiutiful sight. I was in Istanbul for a day as an extended stop-over on my way back from Saudi Arabia. I had noticed that the weather page on yahoo.com was forecasting a nice sunny day and, as it turned out, after a cool, cloudy start, the sun came out, the temperature shot up and the jackets came off. Apart from meeting Jean Paul (see below), it was so great to be back in my favouritre city after being away for more than a year, enhanced by the fact that Istanbul is in the middle of the tulip season, adding colour to almost every corner of the city. Istanbul rightly reclaiming its name as the tulip capital of the world.

Hagia Sophia, İstanbul

Thanks for the sponsorship of Veni Vidi Travel... www.venividitravel.com/ Hagia Sophia is a great architectural beauty and an important monument both for Byzantine and for Ottoman Empires. Once a church, later a mosque, and now a museum at the Turkish Republic, Hagia Sophia has always been the precious of its time. The mystical city Istanbul hosted many civilizations since centuries, of which Byzantium and Ottoman Empires were both the most famous ones. The city today carries the characteristics of these two different cultures and surely Hagia Sophia is a perfect synthesis where one can observe both Ottoman and Byzantium effects under one great dome.

250.000 views! Thank you! - It is absolutely incredible to me that just a few hours ago, Doña Julia was the only woman who existed, and now, now, there is the magnificent Sultana Gulbeyaz. When Ahmed I died in 1617, he was buried near the mosque and a mausoleum was built over his tomb.

The little Prince
Made by keithhull
X Saw this little boy and his mother in the courtyard of the New Mosque on the Waterfront of Istanbul I was able to check with her if it was alright to take the shot but my Turkish is certainly not good enough to ask why he was dressed in such a splendid fashion. It was the day that Turkey celebrated its 86th anniversary as a Republic so it may have something to do with that. Anyway they made a striking pair Perhaps Abigail or Ela can cast light on the mystery THANKS FOR YOUR VISIT HAVE A GREAT DAY To see keithhull's Most Interesting Photos on Flickriver

The Tomb of Sultan II Selim, Istanbul

Thanks for the sponsorship of Veni Vidi Travel... www.venividitravel.com/ The tomb (türbe) of Selim II (1566-1574) was built after his death in 1577. Inside the tomb, lie his wife Nurbanu Sultan, as well as Gevherhan and Ismihan Sultans.
