Fact About The Underground: The Northern Line is one of the most complex line in the entire London Underground, it's because originally it was three different line with a single purpose, The City & South London Railway, The Charing Cross, Euston & Hampstead Railway and The Great Northern & City Railway. The three line later merged into what now called the Northern Line created a complex route with unusual loop and point, thus resulting in a complicated signalling network, had the Northern Line been built as it's planned, it would be just one line going up to High Barnet and down to Modern without any loop or split like the Charing Cross/Bank branch. This is why signal failure are commonplace and train don't always run on time, matter of fact, I'm still quite surprise it still running quite well despite having the most unreliable tube in the LU network. In the near future it will have an automatic train operation, like the Victoria Line to help keep the Northern running smoothly in 2011 (The Jubilee Line, renowned for being the most reliable and always on time, will have their in 2009). Says what you like Anne, it still my favourite Underground line.

Elephant Subways last few months

These subways on the southern roundabout at the Elephant and castle never received the brash 1990s treatment of their cousins on the northern roundabout. They're due to be filled in during 2007 - still with their original concrete and 'chipping' dash finish it would be nice to keep just one, so that people can look back and have an idea of what the Elephant was like from the 1960s through to the noughties. The portico at the centre of the shot is the Metropletian Tabernacle, behind is the main tower of the London College of Communication. To the right with the 'To Let' sign is the corner of what was in the 1960s 'Butts Public House' It's now a chinese noddle bar.

This is one of London's “alternative” shopping centres. Its clients are Latin American immigrants living in South London (around Kennington, where I live). This is the Harrods and the Selfridges for poor, Latin Londoners. Less splendid, cheaper and far less glamorous.
