- Eiffel Tower. The symbol of Paris and one of the most famous landmarks in the world. Built by Gustave Eiffel in 1887-1889, the tower was almost torn down in 1909 and only saved due to its use as a telegraphy antenna. A "must see" if you go to Paris. Queues can be very long, however. Eiffel Tower

View Large The Eiffel Tower (French: La Tour Eiffel, nickname La dame de fer, the iron lady) is a puddle iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris. Built in 1889, it has become both a global icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The tower is the tallest building in Paris and the most-visited paid monument in the world; millions of people ascend it every year. Named for its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, the tower was built as the entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair. The tower stands 324 metres (1,063 ft) tall, about the same height as an 81-storey building. Upon its completion, it surpassed the Washington Monument to assume the title of tallest man-made structure in the world, a title it held for 41 years, until the Chrysler Building in New York City was built in 1930; however, due to the addition in 1957 of the antenna, the tower is now taller than the Chrysler Building. Not including broadcast antennas, it is the second-tallest structure in France after the 2004 Millau Viaduct. The tower has three levels for visitors. Tickets can be purchased to ascend, by stairs or lift, to the first and second levels. The walk to the first level is over 300 steps, as is the walk from the first to the second level. The third and highest level is accessible only by elevator. Both the first and second levels feature restaurants. The tower has become the most prominent symbol of both Paris and France, often in the establishing shot of films set in the city - Eiffel Tower, Wikipedia

This shot is a 30-second exposure taken at about midnight in Paris. Not much post processing applied here. From Wikipedia: The Eiffel Tower (French: Tour Eiffel, [tuʁ ɛfɛl]) is a 19th century iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris that has become both a global icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The Eiffel Tower, which is the tallest building in Paris,[10] is the single most visited paid monument in the world; millions of people ascend it every year. Named after its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, the tower was built as the entrance arch for the 1889 World's Fair. The tower stands 324 m (1,063 ft) tall, about the same height as an 81-story building. It was the tallest man-made structure in the world from its completion until 1930, when it was eclipsed by the Chrysler Building in New York City. Not including broadcast antennas, it is the second-tallest structure in France, behind the Millau Viaduct, completed in 2004. The tower has three levels for visitors. Tickets can be purchased to ascend either on stair or lift to the first and second levels. The walk to the first level is over 300 steps, as is the walk from the first to the second level. My wide angle Sigma 10-20 lens gives an interesting perspective to this great structure. Including the 24 m (78.7 ft) antenna, the structure is 324 m (1,063 ft) high (since 2000), which is equivalent to about 81 levels in a conventional building. In 1902, it was struck by lightning, which meant that 100 metres of the top had to be reconstructed and the lights illuminating the tower had to be replaced, as they were damaged by the high energy of the lightning. The structure of the Eiffel Tower weighs 7,300 tons. There are 1,665 steps (360 to the first level, another 359 to the second). It is not possible for the public to reach the summit via the stairs, lifts are required beyond the second platform. Lift tickets may be purchased at the base or either platform. Depending on the ambient temperature, the top of the tower may shift away from the sun by up to 18cm, due to thermal expansion of the metal on the side facing the sun. The tower also sways 6-7cm in the wind.

Eiffel Tower GigaPixelized!! (Paris) (Zoom Inside)
Made by Anirudh Koul
Sorry Eiffel Tower, I had to Giga Pixelize you. A gigapixel is 1 billion pixels! or 1000 Mega pixels. To put it in context, most cameras in the market are around 8 Mega pixels. Open the image here and zoom in : Eiffel Tower GigaPixelized How it was made: The image was constructed with about 230 zoomed-in photographs with overlapping portions . To prevent differences in shade, colour and focusing, the shutter speed, aperture, focus, ISO and White balance were kept fixed in manual mode. After an unsuccessful at stitching in GIMP, the photos were combined using gigapan sticher. Their site shows photos in flash, so easily zoomable. Although my hotel was 900 meters from the Eiffel tower, I couldn't manage to go up in my 7 day visit. After reaching Paris, I caught a bad flu. The American medicines were no match for the artillery of French bacteria. So in the 7 day period, the only real tourism I did was a 2 hour bus ride. (Resting in bed most of the time). These photos were taken while waiting for the Hop-on-Hop-Off bus.

Eiffel vs. The Sky

Pioneer of aerodynamics (little eiffel, little eiffel) they thought he was real smart Alec (little eiffel, little eiffel) he thought big they called it a phallic (little eiffel, little eiffel) they didn't know he was panoramic little eiffel stands in the archway (little eiffel, little eiffel) keeping low doesn't make no sense sometimes people can be oh so dense they didn't want it but he built it anyway Lyrics from the song Alec Eiffel by the Pixies Tour Eiffel, near sunset with amazing sky evening, trying to find a hole and reach outter space. Must be viewed Torre Eiffel, cerca de la puesta de sol con una tarde de cielo espectacular, intentando encontrar un hueco para salir al espacio exterior. Deberías verla en GRANDE! Made by Rita Crane Photography ~ returning slowly
Follow me on Twitter: twitter.com/#!/ritacranephoto Photo of the Eiffel Tower (La Tour Eiffel) taken in winter, at sunset. Photo prise en hiver, au coucher du soleil. It's hard to imagine how HUGE this structure is. No wonder half of Paris was ready to clobber Eiffel for designing it and getting the city to approve having it plunked down next to the Seine for the World's Fair 1898. One never knows what people will fall in love with though! :-) Having won the hearts of millions around the world it is now the symbol of the planet's most visited city. And it is very very awesome to stand next to it. Thanks Monsieur Eiffel! See another view, taken by another Flickr friend, that is sepia toned, viewed from UNDERNEATH (looks like a mandala) here:

Blue Eiffel Tower
Made by looking4poetry
tonight (30th of June), France was taking on the EU presidency. To celebrate the French Presidency, The eiffel tower had been decorated with the stars composing the EU flag and was enlightened in blue. Though the horizon is not plain blue for Nicolas Sarkozy. The French President will actually have many troubles to cope with during his presidency ; the first one being the settlement of the institutional crisis concerning the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty which had just been refused by Ireland. Update : on 1st of July, Poland announces that following the Irish refusal, it will refuse the Lisbon treaty (despite having already ratified it by the parliament way)...

People or Ants?
Made by boliston
An 50 ISO film is probably not ideal for this type of shot as it's best when there is loads of light, and even though it was sunny, there was not quite so much light under the Eiffel Tower. I'm not sure how their queueing arrangements work but these ant like people were waiting for the lift, whereas I simply climbed the stairs which meant there was no queue at all. Level one is still pretty high and well above the hight of the surrounding buildings. It's 189 feet from the ground or 58 metres. Scanned as a slide using Epson Iscan for Ubuntu Linux on the Epson 4490, then inverted in Gimp to form a positive image.

A bit of a difficult test for a new camera which arrived on Thursday evening. I don't think this photo will stand up technically and in details. It's been processed with Nik Color Efex Graduated Neutral Density Filter and HDR Efex. It's set on the panorama aspect ratio. I'm not sure night photos are the best thing for this camera ... let's see! I'll be doing lots of tests this weekend :) ==== Oh ... front page explore at midnight :-) Merci beaucoup and thanks a lot for all your vists! Position #10

Sunset in the city
Made by Toni Blay
This town goes down at sunset When the hills start turning red The streets roll up at eight o'clock Everybody goes off to bed There's someone callin' someone names You can hear a screen door slam A car goes skatin' down the road Everybody gets out of bed Lyrics from the song This town goes down at sunset by The Beach Boys Too beautiful to be real. Look through the telescope if you are looking for reality. Taken from the viewpoint of the second floor, Eiffel Tower, Paris. 12mm wide angle.
