Edinburgh Castle
Edinburgh Castle is an ancient fortress which, from its position atop Castle Rock, dominates the sky-line of the city of Edinburgh, and is Scotland's most famous (and most visited) landmark. Human habitation of the site is dated back as far as the 9th century BC. As it stands today though, few of the castle's structures pre-date the 16th century.Top photos chosen by u all:
Norman Arch

This is a Norman round chancel arch in St. Margaret's Chapel, the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh Castle. This chapel was built by Queen Margaret's son, King David I of Scotland in 1124. Queen Margaret (1045-93) was Saxon-English, and the wife of King Malcom III of Scotland (1031-93). The arch is 5 feet wide and decorated by chevron mouldings. In the Middle Ages the castle was known as Castrum Puellarum (The Maidens' Castle) as according to legend it was a safe refuge for princesses. Another story was that the Picts kept virgins here. Others say that it is the famed castle of maidens from the tales of King Arthur....
Foog's Gate at Edinburgh Castle

This gate dates back to the 17th century, and was built as the main entry into the Upper Ward and the summit. The name Foog is thought to have derived from Foggy Gate, from the sea mists (haar) that often shroud the castle. Edinburgh Castle can be seen from almost anywhere in the city. The structure sits on top of Castle Rock, an extinct volcano. As you move up the hill in Edinburgh Castle, you are walking back in time. Unesco
