Ferry Wreckage in Carquinez Strait

Ferry Wreckage in Carquinez Strait
Made by Jafafa Hots
Wreckage in the water at Carquinez Strait Regional Shoreline, Bull Valley Staging Area. Reportedly that of a ferry which was used in the area and then remained docked to a pier for years until it burned in the 1960s. Taken from the Eckley Fishing Pier, named for the lost town that used to occupy the area. The California & Hawaiian (C&H) Sugar refinery is in the background. First attempts at HDR, only 2 exposures because I haven't quite figured out my camera yet.

Homemade kayak cart

Homemade kayak cart

This is a folding kayak cart made from an old golf bag cart. Some of the details on this, and on a cheaper, simpler cart, are at my blog. Although I understand why someone might want to obtain a thing of such beauty, I'm afraid it isn't for sale.

The paddlewheel remnants of the abandoned vessel in the Crockett Regional Shoreline, showing the eccentrics that ran the valves. Taken by a Nikon D40x with a Sigma 70-300mm DG non-APO Macro lens. (at 86) The electrical transmission tower in the background is actually on the other side of Carquinez Strait!

The kayak at Eckley

The kayak on the beach between the Eckley pier and the ruins of the Garden City. I like Eckley so much that I did a write-up for my blog at http://tedhamiter.blogspot.com/2011/07/paddling-at-eckley.html. Shot in July 2011 with a camera that thinks everything happens in 2004.

Former Southern Pacific Ferry Boat "Garden City"

Former Southern Pacific Ferry Boat "Garden City"

This is what remains of the former Southern Pacific ferryboat, Garden City. It was constructed in the late 1800's to provide passenger service between Port Costa and Benicia. It was decomissioned in the late 30's. It served as a hangout for sports fishermen until it burnt down in 1983.

EB Capitol at Eckley

EB Capitol at Eckley

On any given Saturday, 36 Amtrak trains pass by Eckley (24 Capitols, 8 San Joaquins and 4 long distance trains - The California Zephyr and Coast Starlight). In a scene that repeats itself daily, a Sacramento bound Capitol passes Eckley Pier, to the east of Crockett, CA.

The Garden City

The remains of the side wheel ferry Garden City, near the Eckley pier at the Carquinez Strait Regional Shoreline. If it's a summer weekend and the tide's out, I sometimes see kids climbing on it. If the tide's in, I sometimes see kids throwing rocks at it.

This was the ferry across the Carquinez Strait between Eckley and Benicia. It seems that later the Garden City was used as a restaurant at the Eckley Resort, and later was largely destroyed by an arsonist's fire. I have way too many pictures of this thing.

An eastbound Capitol rushes through Eckley, passing a stopped UP freight train. This train was blocking the crossing for almost an hour. For a moment, it looked like some folks were ready to climb trough the cars to access the pier.

Still sharp after 14 years!

It's hard to believe the California Cars will turn 14 years old this year! For 14, the cars still look great! Granted, the cars have been repainted and are in the process of being renovated, but they still look great and run good.

I'm going to write up Eckley as a kayaking point-of-departure for my blog, with a few more pictures. (And you can always click the tag if you want to see more photos of Eckley. Chuck and Carl visit the place pretty often...)

I couldn't get the stupid thing to hold still so I could take its picture. Maybe next time I'll try that collectors' trick with the pin. Taken near the Eckley pier at the Carquinez Shoreline regional park.

UP 5448, a C45ACCTE locomotive manufactured by GE (yes...they don't just produce light bulbs and poor programming!), cruises past Eckley enroute to Bahia Yard in Benicia to pick up some autoracks.

The wreckage of the ferry Garden City and the wharves at Eckley. The boilers are still there, and the drive shafts for the side wheels, and some things that may be engine parts.
