The Partisans - Bostonist - Photo of the Day, January 8, 2010: Polish Partisans
Made by MackayPhotography
Bostonist. Photo Of the Day bostonist.com/2010/01/08/photo_of_the_day_january_8_2010_... View of the Boston Skyline from the Monument Polish Partisans Finds A Home In South Boston Start Date: 9/7/2006 End Date: 11/7/2006 Email: jpesaturo@mbta.com Phone: 617-222-5697 The following story appeared in the Boston Globe by Adrienne P. Samuels, Globe Staff, and Andrew Ryan, Globe Correspondent The Polish Partisans sculpture by Andrew Pitynski moved under police escort today to its new home outside the MBTA's World Trade Center Station-Silver Line stop on the South Boston waterfront. The monument had stood on Boston Common from 1983 until January 2006. The five haggard horsemen depicted in Polish Partisans, a statue that stood on Boston Common for 22 years, found a permanent home this morning when a crane hoisted the sculpture into place on the South Boston waterfront. As a clutch of politicians and reporters looked on, Polish war veterans laid a red-and-white flowered wreath at the foot of the monument, which memorializes Polish freedom fighters who battled the Nazis during World War II. We celebrate today the truth, said the sculptor, Andrew Pitynski of Brooklyn, N.Y. The truth that was buried for more than 60 years. The history of the Polish Partisans is the tip of the iceberg in the tragedy of the Polish nation. Pitynski and some in the local Polish community were outraged when the statue was abruptly removed from Boston Common in January and locked in a storage facility. The sculpture was loaned to the city in 1983 and plunked down near the corner of Charles and Beacon streets and never reclaimed. City officials argued that Polish Partisans was never intended to be a long-term fixture on Boston Common and lacked a proper pedestal necessary for permanent display. While local Polish groups marched in protest on City Hall, Daniel A. Grabauskas, the general manager of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, proposed a solution. Grabauskas, who attended today’s dedication, offered a permanent spot on MBTA property outside the Silver Line's World Trade Center Station, in a plaza near the waterfront. Some in the Polish community have complained that the South Boston location doesn’t hold the same cachet as Boston Common. Others, including some of the 20 to 30 onlookers who attended today’s dedication ceremony, were happy that the horsemen had found a permanent home after all these years. I think this is a wonderful spot, said Honorary Consul Marek Lesniewski-Laas of the Polish Consulate in Boston. The more I look at it, the more I think it is good.

Crazy Clouds *E#79

Hello everyone! I'm back from my vacation which I spent going to weddings in Virginia, Rhode Island, and spending the remaining time on Cape Cod. I watched Ted Kennedy's motorcade pass by on Route 3 from Hyannis en route to the JFK Library in Boston, and Karyn and I made unplanned stops on our trip to Williamsburg in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. We visited friends in Baltimore, and I've had a great time over the last 4 weeks. But it's now time to put the seatbelt back on and settle back in to my place in Boston. The clouds sure were crazy that day back in July. I have posted a couple of pictures I took on that evening already, and links (and thumbnails) are shown below in the comments field. I didn't really like the clouds at the time, but they sure made for some interesting shots. While the timing of posting shot was not intended, I just realized that this shot was taken on Boston's World Trade Center Avenue next to the WTC's Boston location near the seaport in South Boston. Such a sad day in our nation's history, and we will always remember the thousands of heroes from that day. As the sun was down, and I was getting tired, I called it a night with a couple of shots from an abandoned dock near Maverick Station in East Boston, Massachusetts across the harbor from Downtown Boston. Again, with no clouds, this shot is not as interesting as it *could* have been, but it's still pretty interesting, I think. I've just returned from a final exam and have another one tomorrow, so that's why I haven't been around much lately. Immediately after tomorrow's final, I'm heading down to Williamsburg Virginia with Karyn on a road trip to my good friend from high school's wedding. As for finals, I found this past semester pretty simple, and I'm so glad it's almost over. Might be my first semester in college with straight A's. Unbelievable that my last year in the PharmD program might bring up my GPA! Pictured Downtown Boston at Night Boston Harbor From East Boston, Massachusetts August 4, 2009 Best if Viewed

With the ducks that kept me company. Lessons learned on my first attempt at night photography: 1- The ball head for my tripod sucks!! Once I would get it where I wanted it and tighten it, the whole thing would shift no matter what I did. So I had to overshoot where I wanted to capture and hope it fell into the correct position (or close enough!) 2 - Bring a small flashlight! (Duh!! So you cen see what the heck you are doing!!) 3 - Gloves would have been nice. 4 - (Another Duh!) Makes sure your battery is well charged, or at least bring along the spare! I wasn't thinking when I left the house. I just figured that if I had to get up and the crack of dawn (or really before) and drive to and from the airport, I should take advantage of the situation. At least now I know a great spot to go to try again, but I don't know if the ducks will be there. :)

Cheah, this is my ROOM!...and yes, I AM a teenager, haha. =] It looks a tad different now, but nothing much has changed. Just more posters and lights, and no T-shirts on the windows. I do that only in Winter for more privacy/warmth and such. Alright, my room consisits of: Christmas string lights, anime/manga posters, How To Draw books, photography books, manga, anime, stuffed animals, LOTS of clothes, figurines, drawings, and odd tidbits here and there. And that's only the stuff off of the top of my head in this shot. xD Friend's reaction upon first seeing my room: I think I died. Yes, I must have, this is heaven...anime heaven...and I'm seeing lights...and JOHNNY DEPP!!...and lights...

*Explored* : ) I have been jumping fences from Piers park to get down to the rotten structures and today realised that there is a much easier way .. walk down the road onto Carlton's Wharf. I've been lucky with the tides at this place .. always low tide it seems .. which make this shot possible. Was hoping for nice sunrise, but instead got completely gray sky, oh well, will try again. There was a lot of coast guard activity when I was here, was wondering how suspicious I looked, pointing a long black think on a tripod towards the city, turned out they were there ushering in a huge ship / BW Pics

Ryan and I went back out today, and we finally took the advice of and went to East Boston where we could get some views of the Financial District part of the Boston Skyline from across the Harbor. It was a beautiful view; but without a cloud in the sky it was tough to get an interesting shot. I'd love to go back when there are either more dramatic clouds or when they complete the other part of this park which is currently under construction. When that is completed, perhaps I can put something interesting in the foreground. Pictured Downtown Boston from Pier 3 East Boston, Massachusetts August 4, 2009 Best if Viewed

A lot of you flickrites have been posting pictures from the park in front of the Courthouse on the South Boston Waterfront facing Rowes Wharf. I decided to look back on that day that I went out there and there were crazy clouds that day. The other picture taken that day is posted in the comments field below The clouds were incredible that day. I did apply the LucisArt filter to this picture, but the clouds were certainly something fierce when we were there. There was sun coming through, but not much. Another picture from my interesting sunset walk with Ryan in Downtown Boston. This sky was so interesting because it was layered with clouds, and with the sunset light from the sun actually coming through (because the skies to the far west were clear), the light was allowed to interact in interesting ways with the different layers: obviously below the upper layer of clouds and above the lower layer of clouds (see the previous shot in my photostream for another interesting example). Photowalk with the Boston Flickr Group had a Blast Carlton Wharf This beautifully landscaped HarborWalk segment offers visitors a great place to gaze at Boston’s skyline. Other amenities include benches, lighting, and an interpretive marker. Carlton Wharf was named for John Carlton, who built the wharf around 1851 for his prosperous barrel making and fish packing business. The wharf was then used for ship building activities and by commission merchants. www.bostonharborwalk.com/placestogo/location.php?nid=4&am...

All the Right Moves

All the Right Moves
Made by Ryan Brenizer
So here's one that probably hasn't been done before. This was a Brenizer Method with 31 images, lit by an iPad, AND composited to hide the light source. But I wasn't just trying to do a trifecta of tricks for the heck of it, all I wanted to do was to solve the problems that would give Carol and Johann the image they wanted. Bringing out the lights of Boston's skyline meant lighting them with a very, very weak light source. Luckily I had one on hand as a photo display. I had my assistant light them as I shot them, and then move out of the way as I shot the rest of the scene. It's not easy, but it works.

The Sagres, a tall ship sailing under the Portuguese flag. with Boston's World Trade Center behind. More information on the Sagres available here: www.thebluecrab.com/Tallships/Sagres.html Although I spent a couple hours downtown, shoot some of the tall ships, I did it with a migraine, and most of what I shot was junk. This is the best shot I took, and probably the only one I will post. For full disclosure, a few of the lights on the rigging were out, and it looked back do I did photoshop them in, cloning other lights.

I took a walk downtown today because it was so warm (54 degrees) and the sky looked like a painting. I got to WTC Avenue, and I saw this view and I just had to stop and take a picture of it :) I had never been this deep into South Boston (I had only been as far as 'A' Street and the ICA/Anthony's Pier 4 before). It was fun, I enjoyed it. I then took the T back from South Station and posted this as soon as I got home! :) Pictured Downtown Boston Skyline From World Trade Center Avenue South Boston, Massachusetts April 13, 2009 Best if Viewed

Update I have never moved a photo up in my stream, but I just heard tonight I won a medal for Best Night Scene with this image in the 2010 Greater Lynn International Salon. My other three images were also accepted. I am pretty happy! Thanks for all the comments and favs on this one, it made Explore as well. ---------------- A little closer look at the sky line, the large clock tower in the middle is the Custom House and the New England Aquarium is on the lower left.

Yup. Another shot of Rowes Wharf and the surrounding buildings from the South Boston Waterfront. This spot will never get old. I stopped by my favorite photo spot just before visiting the World Trade Center Avenue (where I took the previous shot in my photostream, about half an hour later). Twilight is the right time. The new design for the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in Boston provides world class exhibition and performance space and stunning waterfront views from the cantilevered galleries. Designed by architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the ICA makes use of translucent channel glass and sophisticated skylighting systems to control the amount of natural light in the galleries. The mediatheque is another interesting feature that drops down from below the cantilever and provides digital media users an astonishing view of the water.

Since this image is a bit abstract I decided to give it a surrealist title rather than Light Bend or something like that. I created this while in the passenger seat driving through the Ted Williams Tunnel in Boston. I set the camera on the dashboard using the beanbag as a cushion and pressed the button. Special thanks to Mieko for the steady driving in this hectic traffic. By the way it is so confusing driving around Boston I had a hard time trying to geotag this place. So it may be off a mile or two.
