Old trolley tracks and cobblestones in Brooklyn Heights

Old trolley tracks and cobblestones in Brooklyn Heights
Made by IronRodArt - Royce Bair
While in NYC, I walked across the Brooklyn Bridge and over into Brooklyn Heights one night. I loved how the street lights reflected off these old trolley tracks and cobblestones. You can see how the modern asphalt pavement (top right) has flaked away to reveal this great old street. This was a 25 second time exposure. This photo is a b/w toned conversion from a color photo. A I took at the same time shows the actual color exposure via sodium-vapor street lamps, which surprisingly, produced a pleasant sepia toned color. Click on image to see it LARGER and on black. The manhole cover has the word, SANITARY forged onto two lines, and the letters, BPB under that. With a little research I discovered this stands for the Besaans-du Plessis Foundry, which has has been manufacturing cast iron products since 1946 in South Africa. Unlike the cobblestones and the tracks, the manhole cover is a fairly new addition to this street. Press L to view large. Another shot from DUMBO, Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass in Brooklyn. This is an epic area to shoot some really cool street portraits. It's got a lot of character everywhere you look. This red brick wall called my attention so we set up for a couple of shots here. I had a lumopro 160 and lumiquest softbox 3 on a painter pole with a kacey adapter high camera right. I also used an orbis ringflash for some subtle fill but I think I could've done with a tad more. I was working pretty quick here, faster than usual since we were on time constraints in addition to battling the falling ambient light. a little bit of background on blkmarket, these guys throw the best techno events in nyc at the moment. they've been hard at work for the last 5 years and have really made a name for themselves amongst the underground community. Big shout to Cheyenne Bosco for being available to assist on such short notice! You rock!

Taken on a (borrowed) Leica M9, at the New York Photo Festival 2010. Thanks to a tip on For the Love of Brooklyn, I was able to test out a Leica M9 for the day at the New York Photo Festival in Dumbo, Brooklyn. This is the first time I've shot with a rangefinder and it was quite an experience. I felt like I was just getting the hang of using it by the time I had to give it back, and by then I was very tempted to just run off with it. One of the things I loved is the viewfinder, which is huge & bright. Rather then show the exact field-of-view for the lens attached like an SLR, rangefinders always show the same full wide view regardless of the lens. This allows you to see what's going on outside the frame and better anticipate your shot.

ISO 800 | 17mm | f4 | 1/160 430EX II @ 1/4 power | 1/2 CTO | Lastolite TriGrip Difflector used as diffuser | Impact PowerSync16 Things are generally hectic at the moment so I'm only just getting around to editing and positng some more pics from last Saturday's shoot with Kev Brown & Kaimbr. This is the first time I've used a CTO gel in this way and I'm happy with the final result. The car park doesn't exactly make for the most pleasing of backdrops but we were runnin' and gunnin' so it had to suffice. Wake Up New York!

Wake Up New York!

I know, this is a classic among classic New York shots. But you can take a picture of the same thing a hundred times, it will always look different. In this case this shot is special because it was taken at sunrise, in the summer. On this day I woke up at 5 in the morning, I saw the light of the day arriving. Then I decided to go for an early walk, and I chose to stop at Dumbo. I didn't regret it. I love this place, but in such a mood, 6 in the morning, but already warm, almost nobody in the streets... It's just wonderful. Music : Wake Up by Arcade Fire www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEKC5pyOKFU&feature=related

I was in Brooklyn over the weekend for a pizza tour with some visiting friends. This was taken in DUMBO. Did you know that DUMBO is an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass? I just found out that SoHo stood for South of Houston Street and Tribeca means Triangle Below Canal Street! Haha I guess NYC loves acronyms as much as my old company does. It was pretty cold that day and you can see that the snow has not melted yet. We are getting some more fresh snow today. I like this shot because I thought the graffiti van really fit in with the nitty gritty feel of this area. More on the pizza tour later~

This is the first image I took with my 4x5 a while back. Scanned at 1200dpi with an Epson V700. I used my D90 to estimate exposure, which generally underexposes by at least one stop at night. So I knew I'd have to make the image brighter in post, but I wanted a benchmark image to get a feel for the film. There was a delivery truck parked right in front of me, but all I had to do was rise a bit to shoot right over it (the truck was helpful in a way because it blocked a really bright light along the street). I cropped down a bit from the 5000x4000 scan.

Taylor Eigsti

Taylor is one of the young cats on the scene that is really starting to come into his own. He is originally from Northern Cali and started playing piano when he was just 4 years old. He put out his first record when he was 14. Today he is a sought after sideman who plays with Gretchen Parlato, Nick Payton and many others. His next record Daylight at Midnight will be released in fall of 2010 and, I believe, will really put him in the top tier of pianist working today. This was shot with Fuji 400 B&W with a Scheider 2.8 180 in Dumbo Brooklyn.

Casey has been really busy this year. He just recorded a new record with Robert Glasper and is in the process of recording a new Q-Tip album with Kanye and Pherell. This is on top of the non stop touring he has been doing with Robert, Stefon Harris and his own groups. He tells me he hopes to finish his long awaited studio record in August. I recently heard some of his new tunes live and there is no doubt to me that his record will be Slammin'!! This was shot in DUMBO Brooklyn in the late afternoon with a Canon 5D.

Gretchen is a great young vocalist that lives here in NYC. She does not posses an overpowering voice, but one that is extraordinarily expressive. Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Kenny Baron have all raved about her with good reason, she has that rare talent of taking a song and making it her own. Originally from L.A., she moved to New York in 2003 and won the Monk Prize a year later. She will be recording her fourth record this summer. This was shot in DUMBO Brooklyn with ilford Pan F.

...just like the the Manhattan Beach is not well known. It is squeezed in between the South Seaport, the FDR and the Brooklyn Bridge. It is also not accessible unless you decide to trepass. Nevertheless it has spectacular views both of Brooklyn across the East River, some buildings in Lower Manhattan (behind the picture), the South Seaport to the right (out of the picture) and the bridges on the East River (the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges are visible up to the right).

Taken yesterday, after attending the New York Photo Festival. Had a great time (especially the talk by Rene & Radka--google them and check them out!), but really enjoyed walking around Dumbo afterwards. Everyone on the street had a camera in their hands, and I got lots of questions about my ttv contraption. Only thing done to this photo is a little bit of Levels adjustment--the monochrome effect is just the natural color and lighting.

bigger is better I know I should have probably named this photo something a little deeper like reflections but everytime I look at it I can't help but think about the opening credits to that old MadTV dating skit. But please, don't let that distract you from the subtle power and depth of this image :)
