Pandy loved spending a month in Can Tho, Vietnam, which is known as the capital of the Mekong Delta. While there, he spent quite a bit of time hanging out chatting with folks at Cafe Truc. In addition to wonderful fruit drinks and lots of bamboo (truc means bamboo in Vietnamese), Pandy particularly enjoyed exploring this Pandy-sized mountain range and watching the colorful fish in the pool below.

Jackfruit for Desert!

Jackfruit for Desert!

After a bit of searching, Pandy found a wonderful clump of ripe jackfruits that were much easier to reach. Since they can weigh 10 kilos (22 pounds) each, however, we convinced Pandy to take home just one for desert. Opening a jackfruit is hard work, but once he got inside Pandy loved the sweet yellow fruit that surrounds the seeds inside each fruit.

Over the course of his one month stay, Pandy spent many hours trekking through the delta in search of new friends and new foods to try. Even today, the main mode of transportation within the delta region is by boat since there are many more canals than roads. Here's Pandy crossing a small canal on a handy bridge.

While he never grows tired of eating bamboo, Pandy also likes trying new foods. When he saw huge jackfruits hanging from the trees, he just couldn't wait to try one. Unfortunately, this one was a bit too high for him to reach.

Sunday on Phu Sa Island

Phu Sa is a small island in the river about half a mile from Can Tho's city center. It was a hot, sunny day so Pandy was glad he had his handy non la (traditional conical plam leaf hat) to protect him from the sun!

This little boy floated up to our tour-boat and began to sell us banana bunches and cans of Tiger beer mostly by looking sad and holding the objects in the air.

Everywhere Pandy goes he likes making new friends. Here he is at the edge of a pond covered in water lillies chatting with one of the resident water buffalo.

Canned bamboo shoots are fine for urban foraging, but nothing beats foraging for wild ones in the Mekong Delta.
