Family Group and Land Rover Defender

Wife Ann and my father with Ann's cousin Hazel and her husband Peter during a rendezvous at the Dreghorn Services area off the A720 Edinburgh bypass, about 1996. The red Land Rover Defender 90 Hard Top, N396XJB was registered in Reading and was leased to me through my employers from December 1995 till December 1998. Father - died from gullet cancer March 2004 Hazel - died from pancreatic cancer July 2004 Wife - took stroke and became paralysed from waist down and mentally confused July 2009, lives in a nursing home where I visit her. Peter - decent bloke who now lives alone and has heart problems but we still exchange Christmas cards though I haven't seen him for a while. Land Rover - driven south down the A7 and M6 by a driver contracted by the leasing company December 1998 and never seen again! Oh for the good old days when my lifestyle ran to running a Landy and having family around me!

Fence Post cap, Polo Fields, Colinton

Fence Post cap, Polo Fields, Colinton

An F Mortons cast iron fence post cap from the Dreghorn Castle Estate, Colinton, Edinburgh, circa 1850. The fence lies down the east side of the two fields which were later to become The Polo Fields during WW1, then a training ground for Heart of Midlothian Football team. This cap sat in the top of the previous fence post, secured by a strand of wire. It was thought the design reflected the polo hat design as polo was played by WW1 army officers in the ajacent fields. However the design predates WW1 by about 60 years.

Outside Dreghorn Barracks on Redford Road, Edinburgh is a monument commemorating the Covenanters (1666). Constructed from ornamental Ionic columns taken from the colonnade which formed part of William Adam's Old Infirmary (1738), which was located in Infirmary Street and demolished in 1884. This monument, which was erected in 1885, also records other significant military incursions; namely the Romans, Cromwell in 1650 and Charles Edward Stuart in 1745.

Andrew and I went for a walk in the Pentlands. Windy and cold with a bit of snow on the ground. Not often you get one of these signs, possibly an historical artifact given the access laws in Scotland
