Friday was a bright late-winter's day and we'd driven the forty or so kilometres west south-west of Groningen to Drachten in Friesland in splendid sunshine. In what was once the chapel of the former Carmel Convent of Discalced Carmelite sisters, a colleague presented his opus magnum on 'Clarification of Reality'. There were other speakers, of course, and wine and cheese and a variety of edible tidbits; and the necessary conversations... I'd not been at Carmel before and reconnoitring a bit, I soon found myself alone in a delightful garden awash with Snowdrops and golden Winter Aconites just catching the last glow of the sun setting behind the cloister's wall. 'Carmel' was built as late as 1935 and inaugurated in 1936. Catholics then saw an opportunity for missionary work in this 'ungodly' part of Friesland (the province in which more than a millennium earlier St Boniface had been murdered [754]). The Dutch census of 1930 had shown a very strong secularisation, and here was their 'task and calling'. Franciscan friars would do the preaching, recluse - 'enclosed'- Carmelite nuns were to afford an example of mystical devotion. One of these women was locally famous Sister Martina (Bertha Ida van der Meer, 1901-2001). She, I'm told, greatly decried 'the lifting of the grille' - enslaving her to the world! - and never came to terms with the abandonment of Carmel by the Order in 1993. One of her methods of mystical contemplation was to paint icons according to age-old principles (curiously, she also read the Bible in Russian). Indeed, many were presented or sold to laypeople but also to ecclesiastical authorities. I was particularly struck by a curious letter of Sister Martina to a local supplier of her paints and other artistic necessities. She asks him whether he might have something that could darken or occlude the very great lustre of the gold leaf she used. I have no idea why that should be desired. In any case, this Golden Yellow Winter Aconite needed no more clarification, nor would I want it to be darkened... Judge for yourself.

Het lichaam is erg smal, met vaak kleine vleugels en vier lange poten waarmee relatief snel over het wateroppervlak bewogen kan worden. De kleur is bruin tot zwart en de buikzijde lichter, de maximale lengte ongeveer 12 millimeter zonder poten en antennes. Schaatsenrijders lijken sterk op vijverlopers (Hydrometra) en beeklopers (Velia), andere wantsen die op het wateroppervlak leven. Het verschil is dat een vijver- of beekloper hoger boven het water uitsteekt, loopt en niet 'schaatst' en zes duidelijke poten heeft. Een schaatsenrijder heeft er ook zes, maar het voorste paar zit helemaal bij de kop en is veel kleiner en tang-achtig. NS DH II 3210 + 3208 zijn op het, toen eindpunt, van de lijn in Drachten gearriveerd. Deze excursie was als afscheid bedoeld voor de voormalige tramlijn van Groningen naar Drachten die niet veel later werd opgebroken. NS DH II 3210 + 3208 have arrived at the end off the line in Drachten. This excursion was ment as farewell tour for the former tramline between Groningen and Drachten wich was soon afterwards broken up.
