Peter Smith Residence - 1899
Made by Bob_2006
227 Union Street, Vancouver, BC. This house is now gone. This house was built by New Brunswick-born carpenter John Bruce Smith who came to Vancouver in 1882. The house was home to Smith’s extended family, which included his widowed mother, his brother and his wife and family, from 1900 to 1912. From 1925 to 1933 it was home to Kansas-born African-American laborer Elijah “Lige” Holman. Later it was home to Italian-born miner Alberto Barichello and his wife Angelina. Demolished in January 2007, 277 Union was the last house standing in the 200-block of Union Street. During the 1920s and 1940s the 200-blocks of Union and Prior were home to many of Vancouver’s first Italian immigrant families. Also, from the 1920s through to the 1960s, these same blocks which came to be known as Hogan’s Alley formed the nucleus of Vancouver’s Black Community. Hogan’s Alley was the first and last neighbourhood in Vancouver with a substantial concentrated black population. Most of Hogan's Alley was destroyed around 1970 by the construction of the Georgia Viaduct . Home History Research
