Inside the abandoned Catholic community center in East St. Louis. The main floor has some amazingly good natural lighting (for an abandoned building, but also in general), and it's still beautiful in its own paint-peeling way. In the back room, you can see JPM gesturing frantically toward the stairs, because someone is coming up from the basement, where we've just been. It turned out to be one of the residents returning home, and he was quite a bit less pissed-off than we would have expected. The conversation went something like this: He: You guys taking pictures? We (in unison): Yup. He: OK, but don't go upstairs now. Homeless people sleep there. We: OK... thanks. It occurs to me now that he was the only person I've ever spoken to in East St. Louis (who wasn't part of our little excursion team anyway). Should that be surprising? It is, for some reason...

Why are children's areas always the creepiest parts of abandoned buildings? Is it the juxtaposition of happy images with such total decrepitude? Or is just that kids' rooms always get shoved into the crappiest corners of the building, and this only starts to become noticeable once the colorful paint has started to peel from the walls? The fact that there's now a nasty-looking bed in the middle of the room, well yeah, I guess that makes it creepy too... One thing in particular that amazes me about this scene is the fact that, for all the scattered debris and general trashing of the place, the fluorescent bulbs in the light fixture remain untouched.
