=========================================================================== Ancient origin of the church, rebuilt in 1584, has two almost identical Palladian facades, one facing the San Trovaso field and the other to the homonymous river, dominated by large thermal windows. The current name comes from a contraction of the Venetian church used to show the Saints Gervasio and Protasio. According to tradition, this double entry was used to separate the two rival factions of Castellani and Nicolotti when they went to church together, to prevent the outbreak of fighting. The building is home to important religious works, including paintings by Jacopo and Domenico Tintoretto and two altarpieces by Palma il Giovane. In the field on which stands the church you can see the characteristic rise was needed to hold the boxes of clay used to store and filter rainwater for shafts of Venice. Beside the church is the namesake shipyard, one of the last squeri in Venice, where gondolas are built and repaired, and other typical lagoon boats.

=========================================================================== Firstly, I want to thank the owner of the boatyard (the one with the white shirt on the left) for giving me the opportunity to enter and be in contact with a piece of history in Venice, and this picture is dedicated mainly to him. Yes, because at the shipyard of Saint Trovaso is reached only on hotel booking and enter only the organizing committee. A bit of info on the gondola I feel duty-bound. The gondola was built entirely by hand and requires eight different types of wood and months of work. The squerarolo works in arms from time to time by making small changes, in the absence or designs, except in special cases. Even today, the gondolas are constructed entirely by hand by a few master craftsmen still attività.Nello squero San Trovaso is still working with the methods of a century ago. There are no winches and gondolas are pulled up, turned and launched a completely braccia.Ogni gondola is a work in itself and every shipwright has its secrets.

Hilton Hotel, Venice

VENICE: GENERAL INFORMATION: Venice or Venezia is universally proclaimed as one of the most beautiful cities. It is certainly one of the most unusual both in it's history, it's appearance and it's urban plan. Venice rises fro the water and the first impression is that water is everywhere. Actually however, the houses and churches are built on hundreds of islets and firmly reinforced by thousand of pylons sunk into the ground. The canals (rii) that separate the islets and where all kinds of boats go up and down are the equivalent of mainland town streets. Some of the islands in the lagoon where inhabited by fishermen in Roman times, but not untill the Middle ages did it become a clearly defined political and social entity, when it came under the Byzantine sphere of influence, as opposed to the mainland cities that were dominated by the Longobards. In the 9th century Venice embarked on a new form of government, i.e. a duchy headed by a duke (Doge in Venetian dialect) Having severed all ties with the Empre of the East, she enjoyed long centuries of prosperity and glory. The great wealth ammassed with thanks to the Venetian businessmen (among them was Marco Polo) sparked of a big building boom. Venice reached the highth of her polital and economical power in the 15th and 16th century. In 1797 she was annexed by Austria and in 1866 she became part of the Kingdom of Italy. IMPRESSIONS FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHER: Venice is absolutely the most impressive city I've eve seen (though I've only have seen Paris, Barcelona, Brussels, Amsterdam and Manila as for the big cities) We have only been there for a few hours and ofcourse that is not time enough to have a perfectly correct impression, but I stand perplex of it's grand architecture. The power of Venice can not be told in words, or even pictures, you just have to see for yourself! But one little note; it's crowded! Venice is a 3 hours trip from Rovinj by boat. Here's a picture of the Hilton Hotel in Venice. The full name is: Hilton Molino Stucky Venice Hotel. If you want, view large:

=========================================================================== Squeri is one of the few still operating in Venice. The building that houses it has the typical shape of the mountain houses, a circumstance unique to Venice. The reason is twofold: on one side so the carpenters as the timber came from Cadore, the other the slope of the yard and shed antestante that partly covers it were useful in case of rain, as well as a repository for tools. For non-Venetians: the shipyard is the typical site for rowing boats of Venice, a place where gondolas were built and repaired.

Fino A Domani, Venice

If you are feeling indulgent, please do view on black by hitting L! Definitely better in this case. One more from our first night in Venice, back in October. Heavy rain and low light, combined with the wayward AF of the Canon 50mm f/1.8. This was shot on my old 300D, which kind of lost the plot around ISO 800. At the time, with rain, spray and mist coating the camera and lens, both plastic, neither waterproof, and with soaking wet feet, I viewed the whole evening pretty much as a write off. In fact. they're some of my favourite images from the holiday (previous posting linked in the comments). As regards the name, I'm hoping the Flickr community can help by sourcing someone who speaks Japanese and Italian better than I. I wanted to call this one 明日があるさ, but this seemed the linguistic equivalent of mixed metaphors. When I lived in Hiroshima I was told 明日があるさ (ashita ga aru sa) was an ancient expression meaning, there's always tomorrow. In hunting down the script for this, I find it's the name of a semi-comical pop song. If any one could tell me whether my Japanese friends were having fun with me, or whether the expression came before the song, I would be extremely grateful and interested to know. Hope everyone is having a great weekend! Tweet

Made by seier+seier
Ca' Foscari, university of venice, aula Mario Baratto restoration, 1955-56. architect: carlo scarpa, 1906-1978. scarpa suffered a terrible fate after death, his details being copied ad absurdum by his many followers, creating a scarpa fatigue that has made him the least cool architect with younger colleagues in this part of the world. of course, the real crime was reducing scarpa to an architect of details, however tempting. in his best works, the details are always subordinate to a greater vision, sometimes of bewildering complexity. that complexity is learnt from modernism in the other arts, especially literature and painting, and one must never become so at home with scarpa's work as to miss the shock of his rebellion against the idea, fundamental to modern architecture, that a simple solution must always be found however difficult the problem. the glorious columns pictured here, no doubt derived from wright, were built using recycled hardwood from prior demolition work in the ca' foscari.

Venetian Reflections
Made by Jill Clardy
Around every corner in Venice is a charming canal or campo or bridge or boat. This is one of the smallest that we saw of the 443 bridges in Venice, just a few feet wide. The soft morning light and rippling reflections are so pretty. I'm listening to the audio book by John Berendt about Venice City of Falling Angels. He said that Venice is a difficult city to grow old in, as it becomes more and more difficult for the elderly to navigate the many bridges. Since there are no cars in Venice, you have to walk everywhere and carry your purchases back home. You can't jump in your car and park right next to the entrance of the grocery store or Walmart or Costco. You can't call a cab and have them drop you at your door. On the other hand, walking daily probably keeps people fit well into their old age. Location on the map is approximate; I know we were somewhere in Dorsoduro on our way to the Accademia Museum.

Campanile dei Mendicoli
Made by Teone!
The thirteenth-century bell tower of the church of San Nicolo dei Mendicoli. One of the oldest in Venice. A pre-existing construction of VII century was replaced in the 13th century by the present basilica in Romanesque style. Legend tells that during seventeenth century the poor parish priest discovered inside the Bell Tower a rich treasure of gold and silver with which the whole structure was renewed -- Setup -- Nikon D700 Nikkor AF-S 14-24 f/2.8 Dorsoduro - Venice - Italy

--- --- Tumblr | Twitter | Facebook |

Venezia At Night
Made by P-Kittye
There is something magical about Venezia, Italy if you happen to be there at the right time. It was a clear, but quite cold, day when I was there and the wind was freezing my fingers as I tried to take pictures. Of course, this meant it was not very crowded and everything was beautiful. It was fully night, but there were so many lights on the water and all the buildings it does not seem to get truly dark there. The lights at the end of the canal are yet another boat coming around the corner, as this is the main form of transportation there. My first visit to Venezia is one I will never forget!

Pioggia Nera (Black Rain), Venice
Made by flatworldsedge
Very busy at work currently, so, without time to download and process recent shots I'm catching up with some similars from series shot over the last few months. This is from my series last autumn in Venice, caught in heavy rain with a 300D and a 50mm f/1.8. There's plenty technically wrong with the images - soft focus, flare, etc. - but they came out so atmospherically in black and white that I'm keen to get back and shoot some more. Next time I'm in Venice, and I hope it is soon, I will be praying for rain. Hope everyone is having a great weekend so far!

Or maybe I should call it Venetian Decay... they say the ancient city is sinking back into the ocean; in fact the lower floor of thi building has probably been flooded multiple times. Taken from the Vaporetto (water bus) on the Guidecca Canal. Beautiful tones of umber and brick red highlighted by the white marble balconies and the faded forest green shutters.
