No, this wasn't a house of sticks ... it's a wood rubble pile at the Disaster City Urban Search and Rescue training facility at Texas A&M, on which Search and Rescue personnel train their search dogs. It'll be a while before robots can tackle something like this I recon ... On that note, I think I know what a cat feels like when it's trapped up a tree and can't get down ... I climbed to the top of this pile to place some markers for a flying robot and couldn't figure out how to get down! All those bits of wood move around and there are plenty of sharp nails there ... in the end I had to ask a passing FEMA guy to suggest a path that wasn't likely to collapse under me ... I guess if you're going to get stuck somewhere you might as well do so in a place that's full of rescuers!

If you're going to test robots that might have to search a train wreck you might as well do it properly! Incidentally this was one time I was really glad I had a hardhat on ... I managed to whack my head twice on the other end of this carriage trying to get in and out of it (that angle on the train plus the fact that the other end is partially buried makes the doorway a lot shorter than it looks!) ... When robots aren't being run through it, this is another prop on the Disaster City Urban Search and Rescue training grounds at Texas A&M. It's quite a place, amongst other things it has two full sized (6 car plus locomotive) train wrecks!

I'm back! Yup I've been gone for about 6 weeks on a rather hectic tour of the US ... in large part because of robots! I'll try to catch up on my photo uploads in the next week or so (I've amassed over 80 gig of photos and videos!) ... but here's the first, taken at the Texas Engineering and Extension Service site at Disaster City, part of the Texas A&M campus in College Station.
