At Last!

At Last!
Made by Ian Fuller
This is the first time I've been able to get a good silhouette of the Bangkok skyline from the apartment. The sun was in the right place and the air pollution had blown elsewhere. I took a picture with my trusty Canon EOS-300D and loaded it into Photoshop. I was able to select the sky easily. I made separate layers of the sky and the buildings. Then I applied an Exposure adjustment layer to make the buildings black. I applied a Levels adjustment layer to the sky to make it more dramatic. It didn't need much: the sky was great anyway. The good thing is, since everything is done with layers and adjustment layers. I can reuse the picture in many ways. Maybe I will make it into a new masthead for the blog bkkphotographer.wordpress.com

Thai Royal Convoy at Esplanade Centre, Bangkok

Thai Royal Convoy at Esplanade Centre, Bangkok
Made by Ian Fuller
A Thai Royal Person visited the Esplanade Centre, Bangkok. I photographed the vehicles in her or her convoy parked outside. The royal cars with Bureau of the Royal Household license plates included 2 Mercedes-Benz E Class saloons, 1 BMW 5-Series saloon and a Mercedes-Benz Vito APV. All are painted cream and look most impressive. The escorting police vehicles included two silver BMW 5-Series saloons, a Traffic Police and two special police BMW motorcycles. The special police vehicles seem to be dedicated for royal protection duties. I don't know if the new black Audi TT was part of the group. It seems likely it was as it was parked adjacent to the royal convoy.

Toyota Sprinter Marino

Toyota Sprinter Marino
Made by Ian Fuller
The Toyota Sprinter Marino is a four-door hardtop version of the GT-APEX Trueno produced between 1992 - 1998 for sale in the Japanese Domestic Market. Unlike the less powerful models the GT model has twin exhaust pipes, identical to GT-APEX Trueno 20V 4AGE models and has an interior identical to that of the AE100 series Toyota Sprinter GT-APEX Trueno. The Marino is a common sight in New Zealand, because of the country's high volumes of imported vehicles and was discontinued in 1998. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Sprinter_Marino The solution to

Mooncake Package

Mooncake Package
Made by Ian Fuller
It's mooncake season! Here's a package of two mooncakes attractively presented in a cloth bag. They are commonly given as gifts. I wonder if they are the Chinese equivalent of the American Christmas fruit cake - given as presents but often not consumed. They are quite unlike most other Chinese food. There's an interesting article about them here: chinesefood.about.com/od/mooncake/a/moonfestival.htm and the Wikipedia article is, not surprisingly at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mooncake.

American Fried Rice as served by Black Canyon Coffee

American Fried Rice as served by Black Canyon Coffee
Made by Ian Fuller
I don't recognize the dish as especially American from my time living there. I wonder what makes it such in the eyes of the Black Canyon menu planners. The fried egg, the raisins? Definitely not the cocktail sausages split open at the end. I think this counts as a culinary cliche in the same vein as dishes labeled California contain avocado and dishes labeled Hawaiian contain pineapple. Can you suggest other culinary cliches? Whatever ... It tasted acceptable when fortified with some chili sauce and is reasonably priced at 55B. But definitely not the Thai food people comment about.

Bangkok Rainy Afternoon from the Apartment

Bangkok Rainy Afternoon from the Apartment
Made by Ian Fuller
If it's any consolation to the Europeans and North Americans freezing in snow and ice - we had a rain storm in Bangkok this afternoon. It poured like it was monsoon season. All the sois around my apartment are flooded and I can't go and buy groceries until the water goes down. The storm drains in this neighbourhood cannot keep up and they've become clogged with stuff in the cool, dry season. Best viewed large. Life Left

Life Left
Made by chatchavan
If you life has a little time left? assignment from Active Assignment Weekly. What it took: Three days for coming up with this idea. About thirty minutes to shot with the home-made studio light. I took thirteen photos and choose this one. I just know that it is quite hard to take a photo of your own hand. A stain of my blood? Nah, Photoshop saves my blood. I also use it for converting the picture to monochrome and adjusting contrast of the scene.

Come out of the pool!

Come out of the pool!
Made by Ian Fuller
There is a story here, but Picasa 3.0's collage tool didn't let me order the photos. A pretty girl was swimming and her friend was waiting for her. From her body language she got more and more impatient until she almost pulled her friend from the pool. Then she stood by the gate until her friend dressed and followed her. If I wasn't so lazy I'd use Photoshop to order the photos correctly. Picasa only seems to allow randomization of the images. If I pressed the button enough times I guess it would come out right.

Cyberworld Tower on Ratchada Road, Bangkok, Thailand

Cyberworld Tower on Ratchada Road, Bangkok, Thailand
Made by UweBKK (α 550 on )
A building with a history. Shortly before construction was finished in the beginning of 2008 an accident happened and the complete outside of the building from the parking deck to the top went up in flames. Having an apartment only 300 meters away made for an interesting night. No casualties or injuries except at the insurance company later on. It is actually 2 towers. There is another one hiding behind the one we see here.

Lao Hyundai Starex Minivan in Bangkok

Lao Hyundai Starex Minivan in Bangkok
Made by Ian Fuller
A very unusual sighting of a vehicle registered in Laos. The Starex is not sold in Thailand. I don't know how the Lao vehicle registration plate system works. It looks similar to Thailand - I bet the province name is at the top of the plate. See bkkphotographer.wordpress.com/2009/12/31/lao-minivan-in-b...

Ferrari 308 on Rachadapisek Road, Bangkok. I think it had broken down. Note the personalized registration serial. The license (registration) plate is a standard private vehicle plate, post 1997. Black characters on a white background. Two Thai letters with a 1-4 digit serial. The province name (Bangkok - Krung Thep) is in Thai characters at the bottom of the plate.

What Do You Think?

What Do You Think?
Made by Ian Fuller
Using seua_yai's suggestions I straightened the image and cropped it more tightly. Since some stuff still appeared in the left I removed it using the Photoshop Clone Stamp tool. The original image didn't include all the subject's hands so I cropped it more tightly. I kept to my preferred 1:1.5 aspect ratio. I also enhanced the contrast, but I hope not too much.

The final game will be held on Sunday at 17:00 at the Thai-Japan Stadium. The other side is Hong Kong, which won the semi-final game against Thailand (18-10).

Another View of the "Hippy Van"

Another View of the "Hippy Van"
Made by Ian Fuller
I thought there was something unusual about this van when I saw it. Yes, the rear is like the original Microbus. See farm3.static.flickr.com/2684/4059793449_9a153b82a1_t.jpg I wonder if the Brazilian model was imported officially to Thailand.

Mother & Baby

Mother & Baby
Made by Ian Fuller
Mother and baby in the Sriwara Mansion 2 Pool. Made with the Picasa 3 collage tool. I wish it would give me the option of modifying its crops. I sized each image carefully but it has chopped off the top of the mother's head. If I was less lazy I would make the collage myself in Photoshop. But I thought this was worth a try.

A photographic listing of all the Bangkok MTA bus types I have observed. If anyone has more information or corrections, please let me know. Note: The vehicles shown here are those owned by the BMTA. This does not include the buses operated by the Private Joint contractors who operate many routes on behalf of BMTA.

Treasure Trove of Used Cars

Treasure Trove of Used Cars

NSU Ro80. I wonder if they replaced the Wankel rotary engine. Used car dealers on Thanon Walthana Tham in the Huay Khwang district of Bangkok. See picasaweb.google.com/the.bangkok.photographer/20091011# for more pictures.

Friendly Security Guard and His New Motorcycle

Friendly Security Guard and His New Motorcycle
Made by Ian Fuller
This man is always friendly when I pass and and from the subway station. He recently got a new motorcycle. I want to give him a print but it would be better to have the I love my new motorcycle in Thai for him. Can someone put the Thai text in a comment - then I can copy and paste it into Photoshop? Thanks!
