L'arrivée du dak bam

L'arrivée du dak bam

He finally sees the shikhar (spire) of the Shiva temple, the aim of his pilgrimage. This man is a dak bam. He is different from an ordinary pilgrim who has no time limit. The dak bam is time bound : he must walk -bare foot - the 108 km in less than 24 hours. He does'nt sit, nor eat, nor sleep. Villagers on the way spray cold water on his body to cool it. People say that without Shiva's grace, such an exploit is impossible. The dak bam wins the respect of all pilgrims. When everybody stands in a two or three kilometres long line to get to approach the temple, the dak bam enters the shrine without delay.

Pilgrimage to Baba Dham can be easy, or difficult. It is easy if a devotee travels by bus, although he is packed in the heat and it takes 6 hours to reach the place from Sultanganj. But it is more exhausting when he or she walks the 108 kilometers between the Ganga and Baba Dham, carrying holy water from the river as an offering to Shiva Lingam. Rules and Norms aplying to the pilgrims : 1.To maintain celibacy (Bramhacharya) 2.To remember Lord Shiva by keeping mind, heart and speech pure 3.To speak the truth 4.To be inspired by charity and service 5.To take bath before taking the kanwar 6.To recite Bam - Bam 7.Not to use oil and soap 8.Not to wear shoes 9.Not to take any article made of leather 10.To avoid dogs. (dogs should not be touched) You can also read here : www.babadham.org/shrawan.php

Baba Vaidhyanath temple, also called Baba dham, contains one of the twelve Jyotirlinga (natural lingam) hinduism worships most. The spire above the shrine - called shikhara - displays three ascending shaped gold vessels that were donated by the Maharaja of Giddhaur. The man climbing the shikhara is going to take some of the rubans flowing in the wind. They are used by the priests to bless the pilgrims. The line to enter the temple is endless, specially on monday, a special day to Shiva. Men have been approaching step by step, singing all along. BOL would shout one, BAM would answer the others... Wich means Say Shiva. A way to create energy. An article in Hinduism to day www.hinduismtoday.com/archives/2003/4-6/60_deoghar.shtml

Standing in line since 4 in the morning, she was proud that she walked the 108 km up to Babadham in only three days. She said she did this pilgrimage every year, and she felt blessed that she was able to walk. I loved her enigmatic smile..
