On the way down to New Orleans, we stopped for gas in what I now know (thanks to my super powered phone) is Staunton, VA. Three things run through my mind... 1. What a cool building 2. It looks haunted 3. Get out your camera, stupid So, I snap some pictures and tag my location with my phone so I can try to find out what this place is when I get home. Armed with just the location and the assumption that this place is most likely abandoned, I do a little googling and come across a website listing hanuted places in Virginia... I scroll down to find a listing in Staunton... the DeJarnette Center. Googling the DeJarnette Center brings up pictures of... exactly where I was! (My ghost hunting friend will be so proud :-)) Turns out the DeJarnette Center was previously The DeJarnette Asylum and was associated with eugenics: the discrimination against, involuntary sterilization of, and genocide of people designated as undesirable including Blacks, Native Americans, the feeble-minded, the promiscuous, the poor, the middle class, drug addicts and mentally distressed. ...a more sordid story than I expected.

One of the many long, garbage-strewn halls in the abandoned DeJarnette sanitarium in Staunton, Virginia. To get the dramatic lighting effects without losing details in the highs or lows, I created an HDR from five exposures using qtpfsgui. I tonemapped using Mantiuk with contrast equalization, which yields excellent tones, but smears details and muddies colors. The styrofoam ceiling tiles looked like they were made of shiny plastic! I then overlaid a Durand tonemap, which does a much better job with fine details and colors, and set the opacity at about 60%. The result is very faithful to the actual scene.

From five exposures, put together with qtpfsgui. I've been looking for a more realistic HDR methodology, and so I tried this with Reinhard 2004, pregamma 2, brightness 3, chromatic adaptation 0, light adaptation 0.5. It retained the brightness of the available light, without losing the interesting features on the walls. It would be nice to get some more out of the graffiti inside the first door, but I haven't had time for dodging and burning yet.

This was the toughest HDR I've done so far, and the reason why I do 5-brackets or 7-brackets now instead of 3-brackets. It was difficult to keep any fine tonal gradations without banding because there was just so much range in the subject. In the end I had to accept some bloom and blowout in the highs, but it will have to do until I can get out there again.

Note the creepy portrait of (the also creepy) DeJarnette, taped by some jokester to the furthest column on the right. This is an attempt at realistic HDR. I overlaid a Mantiuk tonemap with a Durand to get the striking highs without losing the lows or smearing the details too badly.

I figured I would post some of the remaining photos I got of the Dejarnette Asylum in Staunton, Virginia. This past July it was boarded up and is currently undergoing renovations. - Staunton, Virginia Nikon F100

They don't build 'em the way they used to... it was more economical to just abandon her and build a new one elsewhere than tear this old bitch down. or maybe there're just too many skeletons to bury...
