My own postcard of Amsterdam

Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands. The name is a derivative from Amstel dam pointing to the city's origin: a dam in the river Amstel. The city is known for its historic port, the Rijksmuseum, the red-light district (de Wallen), the liberal coffeeshops, and the canals which have led to Amsterdam being termed the Venice of the North. My photo of the Westertoren in Amsterdam is published on a postcard and available in many tourist shops in and around Amsterdam.

The shot: 3 Exposures HDR (-2,0,+2 EV), Nikkor 18-70, ISO 200, F3.5, Manfrotto tripod Photomatix Tonemapped using the detail enhancer. Gimp: - Bumped up contrast a bit - Unsharp mask - GREYCstoration for noise reduction Background: When I first walked around in Amsterdam, I was excited about the canals. So the first canal I encountered, I set up the tripod and snapped away. Then when I was satisfied, I would pack up the tripod again, and walk off to the next point of view. There the exact same sequence would happen again. So in an hour, I must have advanced about 500m. Now when I'm back home, I look at all of those shots. And they all look exact the same. Canal in the center; some boats; some bicycles; a bit of trees; with a topping of sky. That's why I need to go back to Amsterdam. To take pictures of everything else. Made it to explore #477

Amsterdam is such a great town. Although I had been there a couple of times in the past, my visits had always been measured in minutes rather than days. This time I was there for three days and had an opportunity to actually spend some time walking the city. For such a lively town, it's quite a quiet town. The primary mode of transportation that you notice is bicycles and walking rather than the din of automobile traffic. The people are friendly, the history is abundant and the setting is beautiful. I'll be back. If you enjoy my work, please comment. You may also contact me through my 'real' site; www.JohnRRogers.com for more information on licensing and prints of this or any of my images.

07/08/2010; Just my humble addition to the Gay Pride canal parade. Maybe I've become too much of a critic on my own work, but I just couldn't get into a groove. Mostly because of all of the rain yesterday, but also because my ordered 18-105mm turned out to not be there to be picked up in the store yet due to poor communication on their website. Anyway, I'm putting my money for an actual series of good shots on next year's edition. I definitely got that lens by then, so I can actually be in time to pick a good spot in front of all of the people. Then all that remains, is Mother Nature that's hopefully in a better mood than she was yesterday.

Melee Island. This is the feeling I get from this shot. Melee Island was the place where the Monkey Island adventure would start. Monkey Island is a great game from Lucasfilm, which I used to play back in the nineties. It was always night, in Melee Island, the only lighting being provided by lit windows and street lights. Such a mystical atmosphere! Best viewed large . See the same view at dusk .

I've escaped from the winter weather in Scotland - to the winter weather in Amsterdam! It's lovely to explore the little narrow streets and the canals, but I do have to be careful not to get knocked down by a bicycle. (It's estimated that there are between 600,000 and a million bicycles in the city - more bicycles than people?).

23/12/2010; I had a few other locations in mind as well to go and shoot, but there was a brutal wind coming out of the northeast that was freezing up more than what's good for a human being. So after a while, and I decided to see some more Christmas lights, but then at a bar.

1917 Tire advertisement. During ww1 the import of f.i. rubber from the Dutch East Indies was difficult. That is why early in the war there came a ban on exporting tires and inner tubes. And in 1917, the year this ad was published, rubber became extremely scarce. 0059
