In 1956 what had been 10,000 acres of rolling farm- land, became a research facility for the military. Lockheed operated the Georgia Nuclear Aircraft Laboratory (GNAL), which among other things, tried to develop a nuclear powered aircraft. A 10 megawatt reactor was used in radioactive material research for about 12 years. The area has been con- tinuously monitored for radiation and no health or safety threat has been found. Three acres out of the 10,000 acres continue to be restricted from public use as a precaution. In 1971 Lockheed decommissioned the site and sold the land to the City of Atlanta, for a second metropolitan airport. Since 1975 the Georgia Forestry Commission has managed the property . This is the small South Dawson Forest, The North Dawson Forest is 16,000 acres MORE HISTORY: Check this by Dwayne Keith Petty www.pickensprogress.com/archive/insidedawsonforest.html

The Georgia Nuclear Aircraft Laboratory, also known as AFP No. 67,for Air Force Plant 67 was a United States Air Force test facility located in the Dawson Forest in Dawsonville, Georgia. It was the site of Lockheed's lab for investigating to see if a nuclear aircraft was possible. The site was used for irradiating military equipment, as well as the forest to see what would be the effect of nuclear war, and what it would do to the wildlife. The area was closed in 1971 Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area, a 10,000-acre tract of forest currently owned by Hartsfield International and overseen by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Caught this little gremlin jumping from bush to bush... actually, the two leaves were hanging from a single spider web so tiny the camera didn't pick it up. It made for a fun picture though. Thanks for the view.

Flower I found along the Etowah river. I was experimenting with long exposures and subject movement. I was hoping for even more movement than this, but there's always next time. Thanks for the click.
