A Grand Hall

A Grand Hall
Made by Wade Griffith
www.beckgroup.com/#/union-station Superstar chef Wolfgang Puck has created a new special-events venue at the restored Union Station, the 1916 landmark railroad station. Mr. Puck's catering operation will oversee the Grand Hall on the second level. The old railway ticket booths at the hall's south end will be a bar area; Mr. Puck's state-of-the-art kitchen will occupy the entire north end of the second level. Much of the final design was an attempt to incorporate the original look and colors of the nine-decades-old Union Station. As years of alterations to the building were stripped away, for example, renovators discovered a large cast-iron bar that will be incorporated in the final design. www.unionstationdallas.com

Amtrak train #22, The Eagle, Union Station, Dallas, Texas. As long as the vault was open, I grabbed another relic from long ago and far away. There are really many tickets in that folder in her hand – enough for nine solid days of travel, carefully planned to maximize railroad miles. Just one night off the train, only because there was no other choice! That sweet old sleeping car, The Pine Mesa, was an ex-Santa Fe, 10 roomettes, 6 bedrooms, built by Budd in 1949-50. You really needed to know that, right? ; ) And now . . . since the monsoons have subsided, I have a date with a lawn mower. Bummer. Have a great weekend, all y’all (that’s Texan for “you guys”).

The Gainsville section of the Texas Chief prepares for departure at Dallas, TX in December 1965. I have misplaced hundreds of Kodachrome slides during the last 45-years but this one was found. The shot is a bit nosey but I was young and film was expensive.

This is one of many strange wagon-wheel light fixtures around the entrance to the train station. Normal bulbs around a golden wheel. Totally Dallas.
