View Large On Black Abandoned DLP Rehearsal Studios, Dallas, Texas. This is an interesting little place; a long, two-story building with a half-sunken basement in what is now a really rough industrial neighborhood, it had obviously in it's past at one point been used by a company called Austin Industries, based on the reams of files and cancelled checks found in several of the rooms. At some point a few years ago though, it had been repurposed as a band rehearsal studio complex, and throughout the building there were posters, handbills, and flyers to that effect. Interestingly, when I found out about this abandonment, I thought that it sounded like a place I had rehearsed with a band several years earlier (I’m a musician when I’m not photographing), and sure enough, it was! It was interesting to see it again, abandoned, in total darkness, and trashed beyond recognition. Here's an aerial view if you're interested in how it looks externally. The east end of the basement was under a few inches of water from a broken pipe that was leaking at a pretty good rate; frankly, I was surprised the water was still on, as the place had obviously not been used in some time and had been scavenged and trashed by vandals and appeared to be the home of a few homeless folks from time to time...fortunately not while Phil and I were there though. It took quite a while for us to explore the whole place; 3 floors with lots of little rooms on each side of the long hallway, most of which were filled with some sort of trash of one sort or another; a bass drum case here, a mannequin there, a tacky guitar-clock here...lots to see! So the extended exploration coupled with technical difficulties we were both experiencing that night really cut down on our photo ops. What we're looking at in this photo is the entryway and 1st floor landing at the east end of the building. We placed the mannequin at the top of the stairs, and I had found the disco ball cover behind the camera position for this shot. I got the idea of setting it on top of my 2 mil spotlight in the shot and turning it on for a few seconds; worked out pretty cool! I have to confess though; I Photoshopped the area where the disco ball and the spotlight meet, as there was some light spillage there, and it was bothering me, so I got rid of it! This is a place I wouldn't want to go back to without a mask or respirator of some sort; there's basically zero ventilation, as all the windows and doors are boarded up (well, except for one!), and with all the trash, water mildew, residue, possibly asbestos and who knows what else...it seemed like a good place to develop some respiratory issues. Night, dark room, orange and turquoise gelled strobes, LED flashlight and 2 mil spotlight through my new (used) disco ball cover. (Don't be surprised if it shows up very occasionally in future photos!)

Long exposure from the dock at Whiterock lake, taken just after sunset. A bit of peace in the inner city. I was fortunate to have been the only person around for about an hour in this location which made for some great shots. This was by far my personal fave from the series. The lake is home to an urban legend about a young woman 1920's who appears lakeside, dripping wet. A car circling the lake stops, she indicates she needs a ride home and the driver does just that. Upon arriving at the address the young woman is gone leaving only a soaked seat where she had been sitting. The driver speaks with the residents of the house and learns that the young woman was their daughter and had drown in the lake. Several stories were published in the Dallas papers about these ghostly sightings in the 1960's.. more about whiterock lake here No Group Invites Please joeandrews.wordpress.com

Bank of America Plaza 901 Main Street Dallas, Texas 75202 Bank of America Plaza as viewed through the sculpture, Venture by Alexander Liberman. I almost didn't get this shot. A rent-a-cop chased me away. I was told I had to obtain permission from Nazi Bank of America* to take pictures of this building. I have two questions for the rent-a-cop: 1. There is a really nifty piece of sculpture in front of this building. What's the point of it being there if you can't take a picture? 2. Does he know Nazi Bank of America does not own this building? Its owned by a limited partnership out of Florida and managed by Cushman & Wakefield. Nazi Bank is merely a tenant aka renter aka they do not own the public sidewalk or the airspace of downtown Dallas. * - I'm not real found of Nazi Bank. If ya didn't notice... :-) Like it? You can buy it!

2/15/2010: A night shot of Exall lake at Turtle Creek in Dallas. This was taken around 11:00 at night on 2/11/2010 during the record breaking snowfall in Dallas. Dallas received 12.5 inches of snow in 24 hours, the most ever recorded in a 24 hour period in Dallas. This is not a monotone image with selective color, this was the actual scene. See large on black here: triarch23.shutterchance.com/photoblog/Exall_Lake_-_Turtle... Turtle Creek is a neighborhood running along Turtle Creek and adjacent Turtle Creek Boulevard in the Oak Lawn area of Dallas, Texas (USA). Turtle Creek has also become an adopted nickname for the Oak Lawn neighborhood, though never an official one. The nickname also sometimes applies to a spillover of the Uptown area, which has become the official moniker for the area between downtown Dallas and Oak Lawn beginning in the 1980s. Well, this one was tougher than it should have been: Four shots captured on a tripod. Too much space between the normal and the overexposed images. I was able to get a good merge only by letting Oloneo handle the raw conversion. But with the long exposure times called for I had some hot pixels which Lightroom's raw converter normally hides from me. So I got decent colors and contrast and I fixed the light polluted skies with Viveza local adjustments. But I did have to spend time cloning out several hot pixels in the skies, about 15 or 20 altogether. Just shows how good Lightroom is as a raw converter. I have not had to even consider long exposure noise reduction for several years, nor have I ever had to turn on the internal noise reduction in the camera itself. I also used a few other tricks to amp up the local contrast; a little Nik tools this and a little Topaz adjust that. Hope it makes you wanna go Greyhound!

This duck was preening itself on the rock, with occasional sips. With a day off work, it was a day out to the Forth Worth Stockyards. On the way back to the hotel in north Dallas (Plano) in the early evening, unexpectantly came across a lake that was at the western end of Love Field (airport); this is just off route 12. There were a few people around and lots of birds - ducks mainly. There were signs scattered around - that seemed to be largely ignored - about not feeding the waterfowl as they could be a danger to the aircraft. There are hundreds of the regular flying variety around, however the ducks, a goose and the swan seem content on swimming everywhere. Most photos were taken while I was sitting on a grassy bank just watching the ducks feeding on the grass and going about doing the things they do, largely unconcerned about the human in their midst. If you are feeling hurried ... try it yourself sometime

Deep in the heart of Texas

Deep in the heart of Texas
Made by Michael Fitzgerald (micfitz)
A real American living in here in North Texas once asked me Why did you come here from Australia man, it's so ugly?. I think he was referring to the sprawling urban environment of the DFW Metroplex, which is a flat and featureless concrete jungle 100 miles wide, criss-crossed by power lines and highways which are lined with low rise industrial buildings and strip malls. There are no forests here and trees struggle to survive the hot dry climate. There are no great mountains, no great rivers like the Colorado and Mississippi, no ancient ruins here, no spectacular waterfalls, no mountain backdrops...But here in the heart of Texas exists the landscape of the prairie with it's vast open skies and unique colors that exist no where else on Earth, home to 6.5 million people, largest metro in Texas, 4th largest in USA, 10th largest GMP in the world with an economy equal in size to countries like India, Russia or Canada.

UPDATE: I was just informed that this shot made it to number 50 on explore for 4/1/2007. Many thanks everyone for your kind words. I truly am deeply flattered! I've had a few questions about this shot and I figured I'd post the answers here: 1. This image is straight from the D80. Nothing was done to this other than the use of Noise Ninja. 2. The location is off of Oregon Avenue, which is off Beckley Avenue between I-30 and I-35. 3. Dallas is not a waterfront city. The Trinity River basin was flooded due to heavy rains we received here about two days prior to this shot. Normally the basin is dry and covered in grass. 4. The location is in a somewhat bad area. Don't go alone, be smart about it and take someone with you. 5. The precise location can be found by using GPS coordinates. They are: Lat - 32°46'0.62N Long - 96°49'8.48W Thanks for stopping by. 3/5/2010 In 1869, Dallas's first Catholic parish, Sacred Heart Church, was established by the Bishop of Galveston. The church was built in 1872 and was located at Bryan and Ervay Streets, near present-day St. Paul Station. The cornerstone for the Cathedral was laid 17 June 1898 and the church was formally dedicated on 26 October 1902. On 12 December 1977, Sacred Heart Cathedral was renamed Cathedral Santuario de Guadalupe — the Cathedral Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The Cathedral recently underwent a major multi-phase renovation project. As part of the project, a US$20 million bell tower housing a 49-bell carillon was constructed. The bell tower was planned by the original architect, Nicholas J. Clayton, but was never built. (from wikipedia) See this image on Black at www.triarch23.net/

Henry
Made by Thomas Hawk
You can read more about my $2 Portrait Project here. I've been in Dallas for the past six days photographing it as part of my project to . While in Dallas last Friday I met Henry on Jefferson near North Bishop. Henry told me that he needed money to get a cup of coffee (it was about 27 degrees outside) and also to get a bus to go up to a shelter. Henry emphasized a number of times when we chatted that he wasn't begging but that he was homeless and needed help. Henry also said many times that he was a Christian. He carried a picture of the Virgin Mary around his neck. Henry told me that his wife had just died in Louisville and that without her income it had left him homeless. He told me that he had three children -- 14, 17 and 18.

Whenever I notice other flickrers posting pics with specific color/theme for each day like Blue Monday, Pink Tuesday, Bokeh Wednesday etc... I always wondered... who started this tradition? Is it specific to flickr ? There should be some reason behind it. I personally think it kind of restricts people to shoot & post pictures with that specific color/theme in mind for each day. I 100% agree that I get to see some amazing pictures for each theme... but somehow I am not drawn into it. So here I am with my own Twilight Tuesday pic. I hope this doesn't distract people from commenting about the actual pic... hehe... Location : Pearl Street Bridge over Woodall Rodgers Freeway, DALLAS, TX. Same place from where i took . Also geotagged P.S: Guess what? I am gonna post my buddy icon picture tomorrow :)

This is a night shot of the new Wyly theater in Dallas, TX which is a part of the AT&T Performing Arts Center. You really must view this large to see the details. The vertical lines of the exterior skin of the building are actually individual pipes. The client was the AT&T Performing Arts Center. The program called for a 575-seat “multi-form” theater with the ability to transform between proscenium, thrust, arena, traverse, studio, and flat floor configurations with only a small crew in a few hours; and to open the performance space to its urban surroundings. The area of the building is 7,700 m² (80,300 sf). From www.rex-ny.com/work/wyly-theatre/ See Large on Black at www.triarch23.net
