Sub-alpine wetlands

Not so much of a hike on this Labour Day Monday as a wander with the camera through the sub-alpine wetlands near Yew Lake in Cypress Provincial Park. With temperatures on the mountain not much above 5° it was a little on the chilly side... I guess summer in Vancouver is pretty much over. September 1, 2008.

Heading out for a snow shoe on Cypress we stopped in a tree well that made a small snow cave. I like the focal point and depth of field on either side of my face. Up above you can see how the branches have formed over the years under the weight of the snow to make a frame for a roof of ice and snow.

Vancouver has been shrouded in fog the last week or so, but it clung low to sea level and the hills were clear. The half-covered city below was particularly stunning. And it was stupid warm today. Like 15 degrees Celsius. Half the people on the hill were wearing T-shirts, and that's it.


Cabin Lake Resident #1

These little fellas were swimming around Cabin Lake. The best I can do is identify them as some kind of salamander or newt. All I know is they didn't bite, didn't scare away easily, and didn't even really get out of your way when you were walking around on the rocks. What cheek!

We were on a break in an alpine meadow and I thought I'd snap a quick capture of Holly. I was curious what the d300 would do with snow and flech tonmes in the same exposure. Hollys bit white in this, but not too bad.

Beautiful opening day at Cypress mountain yesterday. 70cm of fresh snow in the past 48hrs, nice and sunny during the day. Only a few runs were open, but who cares.
