Pink Shutters: Princelet Street ~ Spitalfields

Pink Shutters: Princelet Street ~ Spitalfields
Made by curry15
Grade II listed, early 18th century. Obviously this house must be restored but I like the peeling paint and the exposed brick. It must be the most photographed house in Spitalfields. Quite a few houses in Spitalfields have been over restored and now look terrible & I do wonder what will be done to it when eventually work commences. Spitalfields is one of my favourite area of London mostly because the buildings have remained very much as they were originally. The reason for this is because it has a history of poor immigrants who couldn't afford to modernise their homes. A large percentage of houses were built by Huguenots, many who were silk weavers. Jewish immigrants followed and now the area is has a large Bengali population, they all fled because of religious persecution. Houses in streets like this are now very expensiveand are inhabited by architects and artists etc. Probably the most photographed house in Spitalfields. I've been taking photos of it for over twenty years. Early C18. No 4, yellow brick, ground floor stuccoed with pilasters (paired at outer edges and single round door) and entablature above. Parapet, roof not visible. Red segmental arches to french casement windows. www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbA7kQqE4I8 - lingua: en

Gideon Asibi

Gideon is an aspiring Film Director I had the pleassure of meeting the other day. He was hanging out listening to some music when I approached him - we started what it ended up being a long chat about people and their relationships, movies, and how apparently I didn't quite get '2001 Space Odyssey' at all! Talking to people like Gideon was an enriching experience, and seldom I'm able to take the time to try different ideas. I took quite a few shots as we spoke feeling the urge of capturing little bit deeper than the 'surface'. Hope the image talks about the person, too.

Alma Tavern

Alma Tavern
Made by Steve Thoroughgood
The Alma Tavern (which now appears to have been demolished) in Hanbury Street. It was opened in 1854 by Ed Tilney, a returned soldier from the Crimean War. It became one of the area's most notorious 'hook-up' spots for prostitutes and their clients. In its latter years as a pub, it had an exhibition of Ripper-related memorabilia in its rear Victorian restaurant. (Something for the diners to savour while they were tucking into their steaks!).

It's a long time since this building was a pub. Now it's a boutique, like a lot of places around here (which aren't dedicated to curry, that is). Address: 63 Hanbury Street. Former Name(s): The Black Lion. Links: Dead Pubs (history)

Thomas Wood, aka MagicMagic Wood, is a sculptor who one day discovered his vocation for magic. He works with his hands. However I'm hoping he still devotes some time to sculpture, his clay portraits are really outstanding.
