Comin' Down the Mountain
Made by Josh Thompson
Darren and I stopped at this junction to take a quick break. (The uphill trail forks here. The direction the camera is pointed in this photo is how we went up earlier in the day. Now we were returning from the trail to the left/behind the camera direction.) There were a lot of people gathered, and shortly after we stopped I heard people talking about cows (in French). Turns out it was the annual ritual where they bring the cows down to lower elevations for the winter!

There is a giant iron cross at the top of le Reculet. Le Reculet is the second highest point in the Jura by about 2 meters, so the residents of Thoiry (in competition with the residents of Crozet, who have the highest point in the Jura) built this cross to make it the highest point.

This cross is at the Reculet, the highest/2nd highest point of the Jura mountains. You can see it on a clear day from CERN, but this was the first time I actually got to the top. After getting lost, of course.

Close to the mountain edge

Flying downwind for Genevas runway 05, we come very close to the Jura mountains. This area between Switzerland and France offers some nice valley and peaks. And we're so close! Feels almost like one could jump down, and enjoy the nice landscape.

across the jura
Made by now picnic
Usually we see one side of the Jura mountains -- the side we are on. Once we got to the top of the ridge, we could see over the mountains to the other, very calm side. It was much quieter on this side than on the side with Geneva on it.

Day 67 / Summit
Made by Josh Thompson
Gala, Ben, and I climbed Le Reculet today. My first time back to the summit since Darren and I went almost exactly 2 years ago. Thanks to the weird winter, there was much less snow up there than there was 2 years ago.

not cows
Made by now picnic
At first, I thought the animals on the top of the ridge might be cows, but then we saw some climbing up. Maybe they are called chamois? That's what our googling led us to believe.

apple and mt. blanc
Made by now picnic
A delicious apple, enjoyed last weekend on a hike up the Jura mountains. Posted for Jeff, whose new blog is about every apple he eats.

Earlier in the hike I was thinking that I should break out my IR filter (I brought my Gorillapod) to try to cut through the haze. But then I forgot about it.
