Saint George The Dragon
Made by L Plater
Saint George Church or Mar Guirgis Church (in arabic) in Coptic Cairo. It is believed that the family of Joseph, Mary and Jesus visited Coptic Cairo during the flight into Egypt, seeking refuge from Herod. St. George is the principal Greek Orthodox church of Egypt. It is the only round church in the country, built atop the foundations of a Roman round tower. The original church was built in the 10th century and was destroyed by fire. The present church dates only from 1904. Inside, the dark interior is heavy with incense and pierced by beams of sunlight that filter through its stained glass windows. Fortress of Babylon
Made by khowaga1
When the Arab armies arrived in Egypt in the winter of 640-41, they found a Byzantine outpost at this site called - perhaps - Babylon. The Coptic residents threw open the doors to the Arabs in exchange for their help with expelling the Byzantine overlords who had been persecuting them for centuries. Historic Cairo is World Heritage Site 89.

72/365: Act of Devotion

72/365: Act of Devotion. March 13, 2010. In al-Mu'allaqah (the Hanging Chuch) in the Coptic Quarter of Old Cairo, a young boy--one of a long line of young people in a Coptic Christian Youth Group--lights a candle before a relic and icon. I'm usually pretty shy about taking photos of people in situations like this, but I stood there with my camera and everyone saw me--and no one objected. .

Coptic Museum, Old Cairo
Made by Yvon from Ottawa
We chose to spend our last day in Cairo wandering around Old Cairo and visiting the Coptic sites, including the very interesting Coptic Museum , which houses the largest collection of Egyptian Christian artefacts in the world. Old Cairo is located to the southwest of Islamic Cairo. Scanned from a Kodachrome slide using a Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 scanner.

A silent moment

Inside the Church of Saint George, Cairo, Egypt. To my ignorance, I was not aware that more than 10% of the Egyptians are Coptic Orthodox Christians.

Fustat and the Mosque of al-As, the Arab conqueror of Egypt.. Built over the site of his tent in the camp he set up just outside the walls of the Roman/Byzantine Babylon-in-Egypt he had just captured. The new Egyptian capital of Fustat grew around the Mosque.

The Hanging Church, Old Cairo
Made by jrozwado
One of the oldest Coptic churches in Cairo, it is called the Hanging Church because it is built on the wall of the ancient Roman fortress that once stood here. This church was once the seat of the Coptic patriarchate.

The remains of one of the Roman gate towers of Bablyon-in-Egypt . The Greek Orthodox Church of St George is built atop the other. Its only a postcard shot - no real merit other than curiousity value for other viewers.

The Hanging Church, so called because it sits on the remains of the old Roman water tower, just a couple of paces from the gates. This is a Coptic Church.

Coptic Cairo: The "chaplet" of St. George
Made by Stefan Geens
Iconography of St. George slaying the dragon is everywhere, each display outdoing the the other in terms of tackiness. This is the nicest one, by far.

God and love

Despite the Islamic style geometric design and the plainly visible stylized Allah (which is the Arabic word for God), this is in a Christian church.

The Moses well

This is reportedly the spot where the Pharoah's daughter found Moses in a basket among the reeds. The spot is just behind the Ben Ezra Synagogue.
