christiania, glass house, august 2007
Made by seier+seier
please view large for texture and details. august '07: christiania, copenhagen's autonomous favela, has just been given a new lease of life by the Danish government. no buildings will be torn down in the next year while negotiations on future developments continue. the fine examples of a modern architecture without architects like this glass house are safe for now. but christiania's troubles are many and cannot be reduced to the hostile attitude held by our right wing government. what was initially a squatters' community has become a permanent settlement. it has been called a flawed experiment but the truth of the matter is that the experiment is over and has been for many years. the rich cultural life that sent out subversive theatre groups into the 'real' world is long gone. the brilliant santa army happening of 1974 when large numbers of fake santas doled out goods from the shelves to christmas shoppers in copenhagen department stores would make little sense today: christiania is every bit as comfortably materialistic as the rest of denmark...the inhabitants' parked cars line the borders of this self-proclamed pedestrian community and hypocracy is rife. any criticism today would need to be self-criticism, never a real strength of the activist left. to many, the final straw has been the ruthless exploitation of christiania's naively liberal marijuana politics by drug dealers. threats and violence form the worst chapter in this, the decline and fall of copenhagen's hippies, and a poignant reminder as to why the rest of the world chooses the rule of law above utopian anarchy. but if the loss of ideals is felt so keenly here, it is only because those ideals had promise and beauty in the first place. in the words of architectural sage steen eiler rasmussen, in his 1976 defense of christiania: understood correctly, christiania may become an important corrective to a consolidated consumer society run amok. if it didn't exist, we would have to invent it. as a corrective, the place doesn't exist anymore and we may need to reinvent it. till then, we have the houses. le corbusier famously claimed that all architecture could communicate was ideas. and the original ideas of christiania are well put by the best buildings out there: an open community of equals; a deep distrust, no, dismissal of authorities - including architects; a deep trust in the creative potential of ordinary people when left to govern their own lives. modesty. individualism. sustainability. today, there is a strong political will to tear the houses down. they are illegal, follow no building code, have no permits. the old copenhagen defense line on which they are situated must be cleared to protect the city's cultural heritage. but these buildings are cultural heritage too. and while the 20th century has left us all with a distrust of utopian and idealist thinking, tearing them down will be acting in a dangerous denial of history. . more words, yada, yada, yada.

jean nouvel, danish radio concert hall, 2002-2009

jean nouvel, danish radio concert hall, 2002-2009
Made by seier+seier
danish radio concert hall, copenhagen, denmark 2002-2009. architects: atelier jean nouvel. studio 1, the main concert hall. admirers of german architect hans scharoun and his work to reinvent the building typologies of prewar europe in the form of meaningful, democratic institutions and monuments will recognize his berlin philharmonic concert hall as the model for nouvel's copenhagen space. scharoun broke down the concert hall into terraces of seating surrounding the stage, each of them about the size of the stage, so as to dismantle the classical configuration of audience and orchestra as opposing sides. I suspect there are sound values behind many of the strangest of nouvel's choices and here, for once, they become obvious. the upper part of the room, however, remains a mystery to me: gypsum board curves painted in a stretched version of the evening sky from edvard munch's the scream, like some bad highschool photoshop project. I prefer munch's late paintings but mostly for not being the early ones. why I should be confronted with memories of the scream when going to a concert eludes me. but a kind of pattern arises, telling us of nouvel's method, and it is confirmed when viewing the main concert hall from the outside where it is shaped as a meteor - its glowing lava interior shown here. the idea for the shape apparently came from reading that awful, danish novel, miss smilla's sense of snow, whose central characters all hunt for a meteorite embedded in a glacier on greenland. why this image should carry any significance in connection with a national radio concert hall is never explained and I doubt it ever will be. what we are looking at is a postmodern architect shooting from the hip. he believes in seduction and cinematic moments, he believes in storytelling and in tying a building to local culture. but the grand piano studio with a grand piano, the modern-architecture-as-scaffolding, the ceiling as the sky from munch's scream, and the concert hall as a meteorite from smilla, these images never come together because they are not connected except as popular culture's understanding of what higher culture must be. ultimately, nouvel doing free associations on nordic culture is incoherent - he is giving us the architectural equivalent of a mixed metaphor and the necessary synthesis never occurs. that the building has obvious functional qualities and good acoustics is not enough exactly because it is so insistent on its own rambling imagery. more words, .

c.f.hansen, christiansborg palace church, copenhagen, 1810-1826

c.f.hansen, christiansborg palace church, copenhagen, 1810-1826
Made by seier+seier
christiansborg palace church, copenhagen, 1810-1826. architect: c.f. hansen, 1756-1845. this one is for you, wen, should you stop by. it is one of my all-time favourite buildings in copenhagen and shows c.f. hansen at his most radical. the royal palace had burnt down in 1794 and hansen was commisioned to rebuild, reusing foundations, bricks and sometimes entire walls of the palace ruins. apparently the kind of architect who thrives on limitations, he designed what appears to have been a masterpiece of pure geometry, large unbroken surfaces of grey walls and delicate, classical moldings. I say appears to have been because that palace was lost to fire as well, in 1884. it could have been reconstructed, but hansen's architecture was so unpopular at the time that the idea was soon abandoned. in the end, a heavyhanded neo-baroque bad dream in turd coloured granite replaced it and only the palace church survives to tell us of the splendors that were lost. ...except that the church burnt too, of course, and as late as 1992 when the roof and dome were ignited by fireworks from a passing carnival procession...fires are a copenhagen tradition.

Best viewed large. The Royal Library in Copenhagen (Det Kongelige Bibliotek) is the national library of Denmark and the largest library in the Nordic countries. It contains numerous historical treasures; all works that have been printed in Denmark since the 17th century are deposited there. Thanks to extensive donations in the past the library holds nearly all known Danish printed works back to the first Danish book, printed in 1482. The library was founded 1648 by King Frederik III who seeded it with a comprehensive collection of European works. It was opened to the public in 1793. In 1999, a new building adjacent to the old one was opened at Slotsholmen, known as the Black Diamond. The Black Diamond building was designed by Danish architects schmidt hammer lassen. Named for its outside cover of black marble and glass, it houses a concert hall in addition to the library. Read more and more

Johannes

Johannes
Made by mly2000
Johannes is born in Greenland, and I met him in downtown Copenhagen some days ago. Together with 21 other children from Greenland, he was in 1951 moved to Denmark by the Danish government in order to create a future Danish speaking elite population in Greenland. He was one of the last children to be moved and was then 10 years old. The project turned out to be a major disaster for most of the children, and no Danish government has ever had the decency to give an excuse for this mistake. Johannes has lived in Denmark ever since, but has maintained some contact to Greenland and still speaks the language. He was very friendly and positive to be part of the 100-project, and wished me luck in my future work. # 13 in my 100 strangers project. PLEASE. VIEW. LARGE. or dont This photo is dedicated to for his awesome testimonial. Thanks man! Good to be back! Had to take a little break as i have been kinda busy. Hope you are all doing great! Now i have owned the D90 for a week. I am going to say..... i like it more than the D300s. Sure, it doesn't have a magnesium alloy body etc etc but.. its lighter and im not sure why.... every time i take a shot with it, the shutter of the D90 sounds a million times better than the D300s. So satisfying to use! Oh and its half the cost ;) I am still getting to grips with the 70-200 lens. Need to get used to the focal distance. Anyway i hope you enjoy todays shot :) I will be catching up with ALL your streams tonight, looking forward to seeing your new stuff :) Thanks for looking and take care guys! The End.

Church of Our Lady at Kopenhagen. The building measures 83 m in length and 33 m in width. The interior of the nave is 60 m long and over 25 m from floor to ceiling. With all galleries open, the church can seat more than 1100 people. The tower is 60 m high and houses the four church bells (Stormklokken weighs 4 tons and is the largest bell in Denmark. The smallest bell in the tower, used at morning service among other occasions, is the oldest bell in the country, dating from 1490 and taken from Antvorskov Klosterkirke). The pediment is decorated with bronzes of Jesus and the Apostles. The interior is likewise decorated with the twelve apostles, Jesus and an angel, all in Italian marble. All of these sculptures were completed in Rome by the famous Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. by Wikipedia.
