Three Servicemen Frederick Hart The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a national war memorial located in Washington, D.C., that honors members of the U.S. armed forces who had died in service or are unaccounted for during the Vietnam War. Its construction and related issues have been the source of numerous controversies, some of which have resulted in additions to the memorial complex. It currently consists of three separate parts: the Three Soldiers statue, the Vietnam Women's Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall designed by Maya Lin, which is the most recognized part of the memorial. The main part of the memorial was completed in 1982. It receives around 3 million visitors each year. The Vietnam War occurred from 1965 to April 30, 1975. It concluded with the North Vietnamese military victory after more than 15 years and was the first ever major military defeat for the United States. Over 1.4 million military personnel were killed in the war (approximately 6% were members of the United States armed forces), while estimates of civilian fatalities range from 2 to 5.1 million. On April 30, 1975, the capital of South Vietnam, Saigon fell to the communist forces of North Vietnam, effectively ending the Vietnam War. Three slightly larger-than-life figures of young servicemen wearing combat gear representative of all branches of the service. Two carry machine guns and one wears a hat. One figure is an African American. They appear to be emerging from a patrol in the forest. Light green and brown patina. At the far end of the figures, at the entrance to the Vietnam Memorial site, is a companion flagstaff.
