Tate Institute - Silvertown

Sir Henry Tate (1819-1899) was not only donated his art collection to establish the Tate Gallery but he 1887 he ordered the construction of this building opposite his Silvertown sugar works. This was an early example of a working man's club and was exclusively available to the workers of his sugar factory. The factory still stands, and Tate was merged with Lyle in the 1920s, making it Tate & Lyle. Sadly. the Institute closed in 1933 and the building was used as a library until 1961. Since then it has become neglected and abandoned.
