3/100: Adventures of the Shell

3/100: Adventures of the Shell
Made by Louise Lindsay
View large: click B l a c k M a g i c What do you see when you look at the water? Is it a blur in the distance? Shells? I found this shell while swimming in Florida Bay. Taken for 52.5 of 2010, Challenge is: Diptych Collaboration, but I just did the Diptych part. Collaboration sounds fun, but I did not know how to do a Diptych, and so I thought it best to experiment on my own, which is allowed in the group. Also taken for 100 Possibilities project. My shell is the subject. I found this shell while swimming in Florida Bay, on the mucky bottom. It has lots of muck and barnacles and stuff on it, and is far from a perfect shell, but I thought it was pretty and natural. Here, I set it on a wooden railing, on a park in Coconut Grove on the water. Photo of the view, in first comment below. Taken with camera on a 2 delay, so that I would not get camera shake-- very low light-- at twilight. Wishing the shell had more details-- but with 100 possibilities-- lots more attempts to try different things. Another version (without mirror images) in the first comment below. Feedback welcome. Also, a version with just a white background- not sure whicfh looks best- again feedback welcome-- I'm trying to learn. As I used the eye dropper tool to find a color for the background, in Photoshop, I was shocked to see how blue all of the white parts were-- I just love how much blue of the twilight found it's way into the wood and the shell. My first attempt at a diptych. I tried different things in Photoshop Elements, and sort of figured out how to do one. I tried these together with no border-- but it looked strange, so I did it this way. Hope it's okay for the diptych challenge. My Twlight Destination

My Twlight Destination
Made by Louise Lindsay
Ms. Cheeky's Workshop Exercise # 4: Shoot What You Love I often walk to this spot after work. It's a place I love. I'm beginning to work more on night and twlight shots. No tripod, so I set my camera on the railing, with a 2 second delay. But if someone else happens to walk on the boardwalk and shake it, then the photo shakes. I'm learning how to set slightly longer exposures than my auto setting will provide. For the exercise: I tried to follow the rule of thirds, and have the boat harbour in the lower third, and not have the horizon line divide the photo in half. I tried to follow the rule of decluttering- although the dark land on the right maybe detracts. Still, I liked the curve in the water where it meets the land, echoing the cloud curves in the sky. I did a slight crop in order to de-clutter a little. I tried to pay attention to light. It was twlight, and the sun was off to the right (picture is taken facing south). It was long past sunset. Hence, I had to use a longer exposure, and then I used a few Photoshop touches to lighten it up a little and to de-noise. I like the play of light on the water, and the flow of light from right to left. I am open to all feedback and criticism. I do see that the de-noising process added some loss of detail to the boat lights in the distance. I probably needed to use an even longer exposure to capture this better. Twilight in Coconut Grove

Twilight in Coconut Grove
Made by Louise Lindsay
View On Black and Large. They type F11, and F11 again to exit. What do you see when you look at the water? Boats on the water? Twlight reflections and lighting? I often walk my dogs to this park, where I can see this lovely view of Coconut Grove harbor, as well as the lovely park grounds and other vistas. It's such a peaceful spot, and many people pause here to take in the lovely panorama across the water. This photo is my first somewhat successful twilight shot. I'm trying to learn more about twilight and night-time photography and welcome all tips. I let my camera rest on a railing, and then I followed a tip given me by Terry Grealy (http://www.flickr.com/photos/33113103@N03/) to use either a remote shutter device or self-timer feature. So, I tried my self-timer feature--and this came out much better than others I've tried. I don't have a tripod- and don't really want to carry one around. I still have much to learn-- but this is light years beyond where I was before, and did not even bother to post- so bad. I set my Cannon Powershot 630 for a night scene (think it provides a longer exposure-- I'm not a techie here), and used the timer-- to delay the picture-- and voila. Less movement in the photo. I love the twilight- and it's nice to be able to capture some of the beauty I see at twilight. 3/19/09 #2423

"What Do You Mean? Keep Pets Out!" (5/12/Jake/A)

"What Do You Mean? Keep Pets Out!" (5/12/Jake/A)
Made by Louise Lindsay
Taken for 12 months for dogs, challenge is: dogs where they are not supposed to be. None of my other ideas worked out, but maybe this is it. The sign on the right says, Keep Pets Out Of Mulch Area. It can only be read in large size. They are not supposed to be here on the work out equipment and were risking police eviction. Jake, of course, jummped up first, and Lisette followed. Then I tied up his leash, as he is prone to taking off and not coming. See prior photo for the crowd Lisette attracted. Well, not one of my best, but what I got for the challenge- fun to experiment. Not the best composition. Low light, end of the day, lots of distractions, tried my best. I welcome all critiques. That's how I learn. I'm not thin-skinned. Project: Faces [Familiar] Subject: Sydney I have always been fascinated with the way people use their faces to express themselves. There is so much beauty and life that is expelled from the unlimited expressions people make. Just sit on a random street corner and watch the happiness, sadness, anger and everything in between -- you will see what I mean. Everyone's face is unique and always changing as we move through our course called life. A smile today will not look like the smile of yesterday or tomorrow. With this project I want to capture a single expression, a single point in a person's life; it may be good, it may be bad, but it's never permanent. The sub-project [Familiar] focuses on faces that are familiar to me. If you are interested in participating in this project, please let me know.

Squirrel Watch (39/52)

Squirrel Watch (39/52)
Made by Louise Lindsay
Taken for 52 weeks for dogs. Jake. Watching a squirrel on the electrical wires. Coral rock wall- available in old Miami. Lovely textures: fur against stone. But very low light-- post sunset, strange lighting in part from a street lamp and the last rays of light on this corner. My Jake is now 3-- has matured so- beautiful adult looks- not the goofy puppy face he's had for so long- such changes. I'll be away with no computer through Tuesday. Taken for 52 weeks for dogs. Jake. Against the palms, on our evening walk. I'm losing my mo-- I know another head shot. Busy week at work, leaving town tomorrow. Took a quick shot on our walk. As I can't trust Jake off leash many places, it's hard to get anything other than a head shot. may you never walk alone

may you never walk alone
Made by alexdecarvalho
For attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people. For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair, let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day. For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone. People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone. Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms. As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself, and the other for helping others. Audrey Hepburn.

He lives in the sailboat harbor of Coconut Grove, in Biscayne Bay, Florida. He rowed his canoe in to shore and was on his way to the store. After snapping a few shots, he pulled out a 30 year old photo from his wallet of him and his former wife, telling me about how he used to be a model growing up. Great story! I had a meeting today in the North Grove at 5:00, Traffic going home sucked so I stopped at the Miami Marina and squezed off a couple of shots before the sun went down. Sure beat hell out of sitting in my car wasting fuel. I shot this for my mom. She fell in love with these fat birds when we moved to Florida.

This shot was taken outside the Marriot Hotel in Miami. Camera used was a Canon 400D with a 17-85 IS kit lens. There were some very nice boats along the bay but the choppy waters made it hard to capture HDR shots.
